i think this video perfecting highlights why the Analogue 3D is going to be extremely successful. because who wants to go through the headache of figuring all the kits out, and the console + good controller + expansion pack + controller packs + everdrive + upscaler + whatever else greatly go over the 250 pricetage of the new console. as someone who just went through all of this, i would've much rather bought the analogue

The analog 3D doesn't come with an everdrive or a controller, and it's not going to be able to play ROMs right out of the box . All the stuff that I talked about is still about $100 cheaper than getting an analogue 3D. I look forward to actually seeing some footage of it but so far they haven't shown any footage of it actually running games, that's a big deal.

@@8bitjoystick Well, the original n64 doesn't come with an everdrive and cannot play roms either. Everdrive carts also always worked with analogue products so there's no reason to assume it won't for this one. As for your solution being $100 cheaper, you are just missing the one and only sell point of the analogue. Native 4k resolution. So if you want to make a valid comparison, you need to compare how much it would cost to get 4K out of the original n64 vs the analogue 64. I'll help you out on this as I already did the math. Using the most popular products on the market that are available right now, it would cost you over $1200 to get your OG n64 to output 4K upscaled image over HDMI. $350 for the retrotink 5x to get from 240p to 1080p. $750 for the retrotink 4k to get from 1080p to 2160p. Add in the cost of the console and there you have it, About $1200 for the exact same thing analog does for $250. Now as for the lack of footage from the Analogue, sure. We haven't seen anything from the analogue 3D. But anyone that knows a bit about FPGA knows that if you want to get an idea how the analogue will look, just find some footage of someone playing N64 core on a mister, upscaled to a 4K TV and that's pretty much what you'll get.

For 99.9% of average people out there, this video is going to come across as a strong sales pitch FOR buying the Analogue 3D. I'm glad you have everything you need to play N64 on original hardware in the modern day, but nobody has the time, knowledge, or inclination to get all that equipment and figure out how to set it up. You need an upscaler/converter, scanline generator, extra cables, and an Everdrive which probably adds up to close to what the Analogue costs without even taking into consideration the extra hassle. This also isn't taking into account the need for a CRT which is not only incredibly heavy and bulky, but is difficult to find a place for in the home, and takes effort to obtain in the first place. I'm not 100% sure on this, but I think the Analogue 3D will be able to play ROMs off an SD card, offsetting the need for original cartridges or an Everdrive. The reasonable price point, convenience, and small size alone will be more than enough to sell this thing. As a fellow N64 enthusiast, I also have everything shown in your video, but I'm still planning on getting the Analogue 3D for the reasons I mentioned. Happy gaming!

You can actually order the stuff that I got on Amazon and it's still going to come across as cheaper and you can actually hook it up to a CRT TV the way that God and Nintendo intended.

Yes, unfortunately you don't really know what that looks like because analogue hasn't shown off any test footage or samples. There are no review units in anyone's hands so people are taking pre-orders without knowing what the games they're actually going to look like.
The Nintendo 64 actually had a rather low total render resolution and it took full advantage of the CRT TV to hide its low resolution warts.
Hopefully the people that pre-ordered the analogue 3D will be happy with the result. But personally, I'd rather actually see it work. Also, I enjoy playing my games on a CRT TV which is how Nintendo intended them to be played.

your points are very good, but the real value behind this option is that the hardware will not be 30 years old anytime soon unlike my jungle green machine, will give you 4k for new tvs and again gives you a CRT style look built in without relying on TVs that are getting harder to find as they die and weigh more than a lot of modern furniture tends to be rated for. I won't be ditching my current machine, but I am definitely looking forward to a much more straightforward plug and play solution, especially since the SD slot will probably open up some fun options, or at least give me a new way to save games more conveniently and some nice features like translations.

All of my old CRTs are doing just fine as do my old consoles. It's sort of amusing to see that absolutely everybody is assuming that it'll be jailbroken, but then again if you really want to play ROMs there's a mister and emulation options. Personally I'm a big sappy nerd that likes playing cartridges. I usually do that on every other system except for the N64.

    • @thehiddenheretic
      @thehiddenheretic 6 днів тому

@8bitjoystick they are doing fine now, but it's disingenuous to pretend that tech that hasn't been sold for 20+ years will run forever, and the average user can't fix this stuff. When you factor in how many people collect multiples of the consoles still available and sit them on a shelf (and how many collectors keep multiple crts around), how many of these things have gone to dumps, etc, then it's important that we have another option for the future. Emulation is fine but I also prefer a console with real game cartridges.
My point was simply that assuming this runs 1:1 against my real n64 then there is no reason to not embrace a new and valid option, especially for people who don't want to spend as much or likely quite a bit more getting original hardware plus all the extra bits needed to get up and running.

And again, the N64 is not the SEGA Game Gear, It's not known for capacitor problems and there's no disc drive to fail on it.

The biggest reason why I have bought every analogue console so far is the modern conveniences they bring. Im not a crt purist so I prefer the look of the artificial scanlines and hd clean edges. I prefer the ability to have native wireless controller support. Plus being able to use save states is an added bonus for alot of games that didnt have easy checkpoints. And being able to throw a 64gb sd card with games or saves onto the console are very nice to have. And the big reason I use them is because the used retro game market is bananas right now. If you hop on ebay you can spend hundreds of dollars on used games without even trying and I will likely get another everdrive for this unit (though I did not need one for the mega sg). I appreciate your view points and I have definitely considered the modded upgrades to original hardware but for me personally they are not what Im looking for. I do wish that 8bitdo had made a colorful n64 controller like the brawler 64 the classic colors are the bomb. I genuinely believe analogue will redo their nes unit and possibly do a saturn/dreamcast unit or hopefully a ps1 unit down the road. I preordered my unit for this run and its still available several days later. Perhaps they have finally overcome their biggest issue which was limited supply.

But I definitely look forward to UA-camrs actually getting their hands on these things and doing some independent tests. Especially if they're charging $250 plus $50 in shipping. So that's 300 bucks without seeing games run on the thing. I think it'd be interesting to see if it actually looks better than original hardware on an HDMI system or a retropie running emulation.

Hmm you can use your 2,4ghz Brawler64 on the Analogue as it has normal N64 Ports. You can use your everdrive too. Both things people will probably buy too.
I am curious about the "performance mode" as I actually own like 2/3rd of your setup, I got the Brawler for example. I use a HDMI converter to play on a big screen and it looks good enough, but when playing Star Wars Rogue Squadron from start to finish I suffered SO HARD as the PAL Version is so darn slow in the last level it's nearly impossible to finish the darn game, I could only do it with cheating. I hope the Analogue can play games at their max frame rate, be it 30 or whatever they were designed for as I don't think any dev really designed their games to slow down, it was just a thing that happened.
But you are totally right, they have not shown any footage, and I am as curious as anyone else how this will look.

    • @8bitjoystick

Well, I think that analog has definitely cultivated a fear of missing out among their fans, and I still think it's crazy that they promised new and exciting ways to play N64 games, but actually had their pre-orders before actually showing any games running on their hardware. I hope they're able to deliver and what they promised without showing anything.
Nintendo 64 emulation has been particularly tricky and it took fpga development a long time to get there.
When the analog pocket came out, they promised a whole bunch, but it actually took about a year of software updates to get close to what they originally promised. I'm actually glad that I got my analog pocket a year later and I sort of thanked everyone for being a paid beta tester.
I really hope that Nintendo 64 games that were internally rendered at a much lower resolution like 320x240 actually look decent when scaled up to 4K.
I also think it's a little crazy that it's not compatible with their DAC at launch.

And yes, I've tried Upscaled 4k N64 as well. Doesn't bring much to the table. I usually prefer a middleground for older games some resolution that is better than the OG one, but doesnt need to be full scale 4k.

And on a 55" LCD, in 4:3 ratio, its like playing on a 40" CRT TV. The only disadvantage is the lightgun support. I probably will get an Analogue 3D someday but there is also the Mister Pi too. As for the Retrofighters controller, I have the standard USB and NSO versions. The analog sticks are not that great. If you want to creep from a dead stop, the stick doesn't seem to register until say 20%, then you can scale down. The original style Nintendo N64, works perfectly. Its a matter of creeping by or falling off the ledge. I'm thinking the 8bitdo N64 controller will be a good one.

I'm a little bit bothered that the Analogue N64 doesn't come with AV out. Like, I know it's meant to be a HD system. As time goes by, it would be nice to have an option to play N64 on CRT TVs as original consoles may become scarce. Also, having the original and a HD system for multiple consoles is beginning to add up and taking up too much space.

Well Analogue does make an optional DAC, a digital analog converter. So if you get that, you can actually hook their console systems up to an analog CRT TV with the exception of the analogue pocket. I just think that's a little weird because the N64 was made for CRT TVs and I think it's easier to get it to look decent on an HDMI modern TV than to go the other way around.
In my living room I have my 4K TV which is an LCD made by TCL, and I also have a 19-in CRT made by Panasonic. So I can easily hook up a system to either one.

So for me, I really like the all-in-one package feature of the analog products(That comes in a smaller package than the original to boot), and I'm hoping there's a little bit of improvement to the way games run on the original hardware, because a lot of the things the 64 did while very revolutionary at the time are very outdated considered by today's standards for running games. I'm probably still going to get it regardless because I like their stuff quite a bit.
usually after about a week or so of the systems being released custom OS modifications come out to let you run ROMs on the game. And I feel personally that if I'm going to just grab a bunch of emulations for a game, I am probably just going to end up going the emulation route entirely.
As for all the upgrades that's going to make your system run comparably good to an analog system for enthusiasts of retro game players (such as you or myself), I personally think the key demographic here is for people who want kind of a minimalist setup, And don't want to put in all the effort and time to setting up something that isn't just plug and play essentially.

If you don't have an N64 already, I think the 3D is an easier choice. I didn't have any TG/PCE hardware, so I got the Duo and don't regret it. I'm in the same situation as you though, it's a lot harder to justify.

I was at my favorite local retro game store yesterday and they literally had a pile of n64s for $100 a piece. It's a pretty reliable system that's easy to come by.
I mean, do we really need 4K output if the render resolution of the N64 is crazy low, like we're talking like 320x240. I would feel a lot better if they had test footage of games running on it before they offered pre-orders. I know they have a pretty good track record but still.
The older I get, the more I turn into one of those crt radical hipsters. But it makes such a difference for games of this era.

    • @pheria
      @pheria 4 дні тому

@@8bitjoystick The 4K output is useful for scaling issues a 4K panel might have, in my opinion. So that you don't have to rely on a 4K panel scaling a 1080p output (or lower) with a non-integer scale. I don't want the internal render resolution of the N64 games themselves to go up, I like the chunky OG low res look - but scaling that to a larger panel, a lot of screens make questionable decisions. Definitely not made for retro games in mind, or even games in general. The 4K output is only useful for getting around that, I think.
CRT is a whole different animal, and I agree I think it's ideal. The system was made for it, for sure! I only have LCD's, unfortunately, so scaling becomes a little more important to me. All I'm really doing is trying to match a CRT as best I can though, hah. :D
Does that $100 include an Expansion Pak? Those add a little bit - but you'd still be $100 less than the Analogue even if it didn't. Plus your shop probably includes a controller, which the Analogue doesn't have, and you have to pay for expensive shipping from Analogue too x_x
I think you're right though, the Analogue only makes sense if you don't have a CRT and you also don't want to get a scaler for an LCD. If one did get a scaler though, you could use that for all the other retro systems out there too. So even then, original HW + scaler is still probably the better choice for most people.

There is the crowd of people that will say "Why don't you emulate it?" This question always makes me die inside...I enjoy a good emulator and for some games and some systems sure why not? I haven't kept up with n64 emulation for a long while but n64 emulation has always been garbage, hot steaming garbage, I can never get certain games to look and work as great as I want them too. Even on the Nintendo Switch I think the N64 emulation is just okay at best. I think they have put some effort into the N64 library on the Switch performing better and better and the games are running smoother than they originally did when they were first put out on the Switch. The N64 subscription for the Switch allows you to play online with friends which is neat :)
I mentioned the Analogue 3D to a Facebook group and one of the guys said "Nope, I have a N64 but I'm waiting for the N64 mini." If this ever happens it could be kind of cool but I think it'll just run into emulation problems like the emulation problems that exist right now....
Nintendo 64 was KING for me growing up. If Analogue delivers a top tier product, I don't see why they wouldn't I am all for this. Mario Kart 64 is forever embedded in my memory. Cruis'N USA and the other Cruis'N games are my some of my all time favorite games. I try and play some of the racing games through emulation and they just don't feel responsive at all but to be fair I don't really remember how these games controlled back in the day. They don't control well in emulation that's for sure. I hope the Analogue 3D is the dream N64 FPGA machine that I've wanted ever since the Super NT came out :) and maybe it'll get a jailbreak and ____ well you know... ;)

Well for me, the technical limitations that were inherent in early 3D looks so particularly good on a CRT TV that every time that I have it hooked up to an LCD TV. It makes me wish that I actually had it hooked up to a CRT TV because the inherent effects of the TV tube just go hand in hand with the early 3D effects. I mean it's like macaroni and cheese. You could have macaroni with chocolate sauce but it's just not the same without the cheese.
But Analogue has their fans, and they are really good at what they are. For the people who want to play N64 on a HDMI flat screen TV then this is a good option. I personally like the funkiness of the original hardware.

I mean if the analogue option was say $150 I would be all over it, but I have a retro tink already sans a Everdrive so is this really for me? eh maybe. Could just wait for the hacked firmware for the analogue to come out and bam got a everdrive built in but yeah I can only see this being for folk who have a bunch of carts (which I have a dozen) and as a result I'll probably wait and see if the price drops and when the console gets hacked before I pull the trigger.

Nothing beats original hardware, in terms of being purely nostalgic, in my opinion. I suppose there's benefits of having newer hardware that plays the old games, but I more than likely won't buy anything like that. I'm somewhat of a purist. Nice video, friend. On a side note, I always appreciate how happy you are, man. Good vibes.

Well granted an fpga system doesn't use emulation but they haven't shown it running any games yet. I would feel more comfortable if they would have actually shown it running or had review units in the hands of people before they took pre-orders.
I mean the N64 is a pretty tricky console to get right. They've shown what the console looks like, but they haven't shown what it performs like. I want to see the folks like digital foundry do a video on it

It’s still technically emulation. It’s just not software based emulation like you’d get with a PC program, but it’s emulation running on an actual dedicated hardware solution with software or BIOS that tells the specific silicon what to do. As this is NOT the original hardware running the games, this is still an offshoot of emulation.

@@Darknight0681 It's not emulation using software. It's actually Hardware recreation using fpga circuitry. Emulation is trying to get close enough using software, fpga actually recreates one-to-one logic circuits.
