Two lenses that I think would be fun and challenging to try in this way (and which I've intended to use more often) would be the XF90mm F/2 and XF14mm F/2.8 (eq. ranges being: 137mm and 21mm).

I like the 24mm, 50mm is great too but sometimes you want to see what's going on in the environment and not have it be out of focus to the point where it's just blurry. 24mm does a good job of retaining clarity for certain scenarios.

The not-so-hidden secret about shooting prime lenses with a Sony full-frame camera (and maybe others) is that you also have Super 35 mode which essentially gives you two focal lengths! With my 28mm f2, I basically also have a 50mm lens and it has helped me to get certain shots a number of times!

      @Pierretlambert  6 років тому +3

Oh yeah thanks Jacob!! The super 35 is super practical hehe!!

24 mm is a bit wide, but it can work in tight Asian cities with narrow alleys. I think I'd go with a 35 mm as an only lens though.

The 24mm is good. But if I have budget only for one lens would you recommend 16-35mm gm or 24mm gm?

A prime lens historically will be sharper, and with a larger aperture and allows better low-light shots. It's a matter of taste, depending on what kinds of photos you like to take.

Currently I'm using Loxia 21mm only in my street photography. So, this would be my 7 days challenge lens. Eventually, I would like to try the Sony 24mm. I don't think that 24mm is too wide. It just depends on what your intent is. I like having a context around my main subject and to show the main subject in relation e.g. of large buildings. I also put a strong emphasis on leading lines. And wide angle lenses are great for leading lines. Wide angle lenses are also great for zone focussing thanks to the immense depth of field. You hardly get your subject out of focus even with a manual lens such as the Loxia 21mm.

Thanks for the video. I spent the entire summer using a 20mm (not a 24mm) for street photography in South Korea. I have to admit it is very challenging at times to use it. When i was full of energy and felt like interacting with people the photos came out great and quite engaging, but there were many moments when i wished i had a longer lens (35mm or 50mm) because i simply wasn't in the mood of getting in so close( you also get tired of people's reactions when you try to stick a lens in their face:). Also making a nice composition with a lens this wide isn't easy at all because so much is in the frame. For me it is very useful at times to have when the mood strikes, but as an everyday general street photography lens, if i could only go for one it would be a 35mm (just about perfect balance).

    Over the decades, I tried 21, 24, 28, 35, 40, 45, 50, and 55mm lenses in one-lens/one-body situations. All worked well.
    For the 24mm focal length, I used a 24mm f/2 Nikkor prime or a 20-35mm f/2.8 Nikkor zoom.

Well, in my young days a traveled the USA with a 50/1,7 and a 24/2.8 on my trusty Minolta SRT 101. Today I'm on Leica M240 and for a 7 days challenge I would choose the 50 mm. I'm so used to it as daily shooter. It's very conservative, I know. My second camera was a Braun with a 40 and a 85 mm screw on lens from Schneider; also a nice combo.

to answer your question I would definitely pick up the 24mm to challenge myself during street photography. I recently played with it and it was a challenge for me because 24mm is so wide compared to the 35 or 50. Like you said 24mm forced me to get closer to my subject it forced me to develop my story of the scene. thank you for sharing this video. I would love to get this lens for vlogging as well because is super small is like a baby 85 gm just way lighter lol.

I do a 70-200mm on a film camera and smartphone challenge now. It's quite interesting because one is the opposite of the other.
The Pixel XL is dope in low light, has wide angle, high burst rate and is super clean.
Kodak Gold 200 with a 4.5-5.6 only works in bright situations. It's quite long, slow and dirty.

I do street photography carrying 2 cameras, x100s+wcl (28mm) and a x-t1+35mmf2 (~50mm). I can shoot 99% of the shoots with this combo. Just great!!... as challenge I would take a 85 or 135mm to see what happen xD

I've loved wide-angle photography for decades, and decades ago 24mm f/2.0 Canon FDn was my main lens for photo-journalism, but a 24mm f/1.4 was always my dream lens as it would do just as you say, put subjects in dramatic perspective but yet isolating them from the many elements and clutter a 24mm brings into the frame.
24-70mm f/2.8 is my favourite for street photography and most shots of people and places. But if I had only one focal length for street photography, 40mm on a full frame would likely be it, as when I shoot Street photography with the 24-70mm I find most of my people on the street shots are at 40mm and 60mm, with perspective and dramatic shots of places and things at 24mm. Kai Wong did a video about 40mm and street photography and he echoes my sentiments about 40mm closely.

I like the Canon 24 2.8 for street photography, but on an aps-c camera, and not for full frame. For FF, I’d go with a 35mm.

Honestly, Prime lenses are the best. I'd much rather replace all my zoom lenses with prime lenses in a 7-day challenge. 24, 40, 50. I'm a run and gun/on my feet type of photographer/videographer.

  • @colliescameraaction8944

Great video! I have 50mm 1.4 and a 16-35 2.8. I’m undecided on whether to get a fast 24, 28 or 35 next. For street photography i like to go out with just one lens and force myself to work the with focal length at hand. 50mm doesn’t give me as much context as I’d like, and i miss a lot when shooting from the hip, but it is fast and i get good separation. I’d like something faster than the 16-35 2.8 for better separation, and also because its bulky.

I prefer my Sony 55-210mm zoom lens, which I use all the time. But, when I have shot wide-angle, I use my 16mm, sometimes 24mm.

  • @Anahj787
    @Anahj787 6 років тому +1

OK I might be speaking from a Sony perspective. But the 24 is a sweet lens to have. Because if I’m using it on my a 7R3 I can always put it in APC mode and have a 36 mm. And if I have it on my a 6500 , which would be actually 36mm , I can always use my clear image zoom to get in closer for my shots. . So yes I would choose my 24 mm 1.4 GM . 😉

I use a G1X while I ride my motorcycle all over the place. I'm more of a landscape photographer, I even shoot cities and buildings like they were landscapes, so people will normally look tiny. The G1X has a 15-45mm lens, 24-70mm equivalent in full frame. But 99% of my shots are at the widest angle possible. So it's a focal length I know quite well. Maybe someday I till try street photography, but I guess I would be too shy even zoomed in from afar, people notice you are pointing the camera at them.

I shoot with a 28mm 1.8.... It's great 95% of the time... although at times vertical lines can be distorted on the right or left edges. Never used a 24mm.... I would think that there may be barrel / fisheye distortion tendencies there as well. Careful out there.

I was encouraged to get the Fuji 18mm (24mm equivalent) but went for the 33mm (50mm equivalent) instead. I just don't like the way that the 24mm equivalent makes the background look like it's being stretched away from you. It feels almost gimmicky and makes the lens 'part of the story' too much for me, although I'll admit it gives photos a lovely dynamism.
But we'll see if I find the 50mm equivalent too restrictive for London's busy streets, and if its 'as the eye sees it' results feel too lifeless. I've been using my 16-55mm (24mm-84mm equivalent) for two years and know I often gravitate towards the mid-range.

I've been mainly using the Sigma 16mm, but with the 1.5 crop it's a 24mm. I don't think it's too wide for street photography ....I'm usually walking amongst the subjects so I'm not far away. Also, I love using the distortion and bokeh (it's a f1.4) to get crazy effects .... like having my subject holding something towards the lens and focusing on their hands.

I’m shooting street with a FujiX70 with a 18,5mm which should a bit tighter than 24mm but that’s also a focal length inspiring you to get close. I enjoy both closeups and nice wide shots of buildings and all. I have been using 50mm f/1.8 on my canon crop sensor. But now with Fuji xt-2 23mmf/2 is best lens for streets,

I would take the 24mm! I already did that when I went to Rome a shot all of it with my Minolta vintage 24mm f3.5... And I loved it!

There's definetly something special about the 24mm. I dont know if it’s the AoV the resembles photojournalism style, but it somehow catches me.

If we are talking about smartphones I heard that a wide angle lens is between 25mm to 35mm...is this correct? And anything lower than 25mm is considered "ultrawide"? Please advice. thanks.

The quality of this lens is incredible! But I can not decide between this one and the 16-35mm... Tough choice. Is it Betancuria? Caleta de Famara?

24 or 35mm lens for an island. As smartphones now have 24-26mm prime lens people will be more used to wider angle. 50mm will soon be perceived as too narrow 😉

I see a lot of 24 or 35 answers. For me on my Sony a7r3 I take the 28mm f2. With apsc mode I get 34mm and in the normal FF mode I get 28mm . Best of both words. But I really like 28mm on FF. And at F2 I can get enough blur and low light for most situations and the lens is not really expensive.

i'm planning to get the fuji 16mm f2.8 which is releasing next year,,,, i've sold the 16mm f1.4 because it was too big (for me) and i found myself never really using f1.4 on streets... after this vid i'm getting confused ,, i still love the 24mm eqiv fov

The other problem is: if you get very close( like Water Klein) people starts to get really deformed if they are far from the center.

I think 24mm is too wide for street cz u have to intrude someone privacy by getting too close, 35mm will be more convenient. i use mostly 24mm for potrait, indoor, coffee shop, product and landscape. The dramatic perspective is really appealing

24mm on Apsc is equivalent to 36-38mm for full frame, so perfect for street photography in my opinion

I switched three days ago from my ZEISS 35mm to the 24mm GM. At first I was like: "Oh shit! What the f*ck did I just do?!" because I use always just one lens on my system and it looked so strange at first. But for now, I think this was one of the best decisions I just did. Everything I shoot gets way more story in it, even portraiture isn't really an issue, it's possible but you have to go very close. You can shoot like on your iPhone (hope you know what I mean, I love those kind of personal shots) but with that feel and look of a professional gear, this changes a lot because it's way more possible to do a kind of photography which I couldn't with the focal length of 35mm.
