Throughout the years I’ve bought (and still own) 24mm, 28mm, 35mm, 40mm, 50mm, and 85mm primes , as well as a 24mm - 120mm zoom, and I definitely know which I used the most and which I use the least. If I could only own one lens it would be the 35mm - but I wouldn’t be very happy. But if I could only own two it would be the 28mm and the 50mm. Those two as a team really can handle a lot of situations.
My favorite focal length is 28mm - I think that it's your favorite focal length too since you grabbed a Ricoh GR at the end. 28 mm takes in enough of the background to put your subject in it context, making for a better "story". 50 mm tends to isolate the subject, making your photo look like a page out of a field guide.
Thanks for the video. Over the decades, I have tried 21, 24, 28, 35, 40, 45, 50, and 55mm for one lens/one full-frame body street photography. All worked well. The 24, 35, and 50mm lenses work well alone or with others. Here are three three-lens kits that I like to use for street photography: 24/50/105 24/35/85 24/35/90
In my Canon days 50 & 85mm were my main tools and 35 was only accessory. It all changed with the X100 and 35mm became my favorite focal lens. Now I wanna try 24mm. Things change and your videos help so thank you Samuel!
Despite your concern, the difference in field of view and framing was VERY clearly shown in this video. The switching made it fresh. Lots of great images too!
Both! The camera was attached to an external recorder which makes it a little uncomfortable to use with the viewfinder so I was mostly using the LCD screen.
i shot leica for years loved the 50mm and the 28mm. the 35 was kinda this strange focal length that was either too wide or too tele if that makes sense. the 28 is amazing for close up street work and the 50 just seemed so natural and cinematic to me. 35 to me was the red headed step child in my family.
I am so glad to have come across this video! I recently bought a 35mm XC lens, and fell into that mistake of thinking it gave a 35mm focal length. However I actually really like the idea of finding better isolation in subjects with my 50mm focal length, and your examples of how to approach a scene really help
@@SamuelStreetlife Couldn't agree with this more! such a fantastic job keep keeping things interesting throughout as always! Fantastic editing also! :)
Your videos always make me happy! I found with the Ricoh that 9/10 times I would crop the image in post to around 35mm equivalent, so I use a 50mm and a 35mm for virtually all my work now.. I love how close Gilden would get to his subjects, but I like just a little more space incase I have to step out the way of in-coming fists! 😉
Den Hund mit der Löwenmähne (7:27) hab ich vor zwei Jahren schon in Ginza gesehen. Scheint wohl öfter da zu sein :D Sehr cooles Video mit interessanter Übersicht über die verschiedenen Brennweiten.
I really enjoyed the screen being recorded here. Nice alternative, but more work I guess on the edit and all the gear that you need to walk with. Well done!
You did well! Good enough to show how to get those shots in your eyes! Thank you for the inspirations ! Love your styles of shooting ! I love candid shots too! I am still learning .
Were you back button focusing? You seemed to focus so fast. It still takes time to click the back button focus and then the shutter so I was surprised at how fast you focused. Also your exposure compensation seemed to change on It's own?!. How did you do that? Or are you just that fast at turning the exposure compensation wheel?
As you noticed, the 16mm f/2.8 is much wider than the 18mm. But that is also because the 16mm f/2.8 actually is not 16mm, but closer to 15mm. I don't know why. But if you compare it with af full frame 24mm or even the Fujinon 16mm f/1.4, you can see it is wider. A bit strange. But this gives it a little more distortion.
Can someone help me out? How does he film the POV aspect of the video. Does he place a GoPro in front of the LCD screen or is it screen recording? Please and thank you
I always felt that it was overly simplistic, but that said when Robert Capa said "if your pictures aren't good enough your not close enough" I don't think he would have suggested that one use a longer focal length . . . .
Hey! Not sure if was a question before but I also do street photography and wonder how you attached your actioncam to your camera? I use a gopro on my chest what is a good look but I like your idea as well and maybe want to apply to my set up too.
Another great video and loving the in camera POV. My key take away is how lens choice relates to both the look that you are going for and the techniques used ie cutoff and fishing.
I own a Panasonic LX100II compact camera, since I have just begun doing photography. I am really interested in the distance between you and your objects while using different lenses. How much does the distance differ when shooting 24mm vs 35 for example (in meters please)? What distance did you choose while taking the photo of the three business men for example? Living in Germany I think many people will find the distance very intimidating... very hard to do street photography in this country I guess...
Very good example video to show how different your own photos look like with different focal lengths. 👍 I would include 85mm too because it looks like it becomes a new trend to use an even more isolating length.(monaris, sixstreetunder) Could you tell where you get that black square lens hood? I'am looking for quite some time to get one. (germany)
This makes me want all three! (or a zoom with click-stops in between, if there was such a thing) But I can definitely see how 35 seems the most natural to me out of these, and why 40 was popular on old film rangefinders like the Canonet.
Like a few commenting, nice video..however, how are you holding your camera? It looks like your holding it at chest height, and have it blue tooth tethered to your phone for the shutter. From experience with fuji's, that would explain 6400 ISO in day lit environment with 1000 shutter speed...its hard to change those settings from the app.
No it's auto ISO. 6400 is the limit. If you take a look at the ISO value right before I photograph, it changes to a much lower value. And I was holding the camera infront if my face like I would do when shooting video. The camera was connected via HDMI cable to an external recorder.
@@SamuelStreetlife Thanks for sharing. The eye can be easily deceived. It looked like you were shooting from the hip, but at chest level and remote triggering. I am not a street photo guy. I like images others produce, but don't shoot it myself. Hence the question.
Hi ! Good Vidéo. A have a question who isn't link to the video but you may help me. I'm looking for a printer not to expensive to print my first Zine of street photos. Do you know a good company ? Where do you print your zine ? Have a good evening !
TBH, I pretty much live and die by 40mm and 70mm primes using either a KP for my APS-C body or a K1 for my Full Frame. I use a similar setup with a 20mm and 42.5mm Panasonic lens (40mm and 85mm equivalents) on my GX85 for my lightweight mirrorless kit. I'm on the edge of selling off some of my gear to pick up a Sony a7c to get a rangefinder style full frame. The Sony 40mm and 85mm are reasonably priced with pretty good results from what I've seen.
It is worth to mention that even that you have a crop factor on apsc, that makes you look like if you are using a longer focal, you still have the distortion of the glasses that the lens is built. So even that it seem like a 24 mm lens, the distortion still from a 16mm lens... that it is not something that many tell...
Sam, what do you think of using a zoom? I'm trying a Nikon a1000 for a few days. I'd like to work as lite as possible with being flexible. I look forward to hearing from you.... I hope.
Hello i luv your “on the street” series, this viedeo is 24 35 50, how did you think 28? And can you tell me who are the couple mm photography master in your video picture?
What about the 75mm? I'm a fan from Brazil. Your channel has inspired me to photograph in the street. I'm still a little shy. I have a 35mm (Fuji 23mm F2) and I get a little bit messy at times. Would you recommend me? Fuji 50mm (75mm equiv) or Fuji 35mm (50mm equiv)? Thanks. Success for you!
These POV videos tell so much more than what you could tell by word about how you find your shots. 10/10.
Glad to hear it was interesting to you! Yes, it's a very cool way of showing the process :)
@@SamuelStreetlife These videos are amazing! Please do more videos like this! Thank you for all your work!
You say your English is “not so good.” I love your clean, clear, honest delivery. Your English, by the way, is very good!
you do have an accent, but hey what counts more is what is being told and that is just interesting... I just like your laid-back narrative style!
Throughout the years I’ve bought (and still own) 24mm, 28mm, 35mm, 40mm, 50mm, and 85mm primes , as well as a 24mm - 120mm zoom, and I definitely know which I used the most and which I use the least. I’d like to point out how happy that family makes me feel at 4:28
You should do more of those POVs. It really help us to understand your and potentially our awareness and what you and us would go for.
Thanks for showing the use of different lens real time, it is very educational for me by understanding how you use each lens. Please do more of this.
Revisted this video for a second time..also loving the jazzy music! We Appreciate you!
Despite your concern, the difference in field of view and framing was VERY clearly shown in this video. The switching made it fresh. Lots of great images too!
do you shoot with viewfinder or screen in this video? it looks like you didn't disturb the scene much when you shoot.
Both! The camera was attached to an external recorder which makes it a little uncomfortable to use with the viewfinder so I was mostly using the LCD screen.
Those pictures at the end were very artistically done. Excellent photos!
Perfect ending. I laughed out loud. nice one.

28mm MASTER FOCAL LENGTH!
I personally like 28mm too.
Phenomenal work. Raising the bar here. Loved this video and really showing how and why these lenses differ. Great work brother!

This’s one of my favorite videos. Thank you. So, what is your favorite focal length in wide angle lenses? 🎉
I love the POV! I need to learn how to do this.
Great video, I love the content and you pulled some nice snaps. Well done.
Hi ..loved the video ... can you please share for how you shot this POV video as i would love to understand this technique on my videos too .
What is the camera model?
Thanks for the video RoboCop. Please keep them coming. I enjoyed the Nick Turpin style FPS
As you noticed, the 16mm f/2.8 is much wider than the 18mm. But that is also because the 16mm f/2.8 actually is not 16mm, but closer to 15mm. I don't know why. Why does your X-H1 have the logo taped over and GR on there?
So, 28mm (GR3). I like it too. Seems to be the best of 24 and 35 in a single lens.
There's something about B&W that makes everything more dramatic.
That was definitely a pretty good video, Sam! Thanks very much for the effort and insights!
Can someone help me out? How does he film the POV aspect of the video. Does he place a GoPro in front of the LCD screen or is it screen recording? Please and thank you
I'm loving my 40mm. What are your thoughts on 85mm for street photography?
So the answer is 18.3 / 28mm Great video I've enjoyed them all, many thanks Samuel and keep making them.

Great video, enjoyed it!
Bought myself 35mmf2 but didn’t know it is really 50mm. Going to 23mm next
Nurlan Baytok 35f2 is my favorite lens out of the whole lineup. Hope you are enjoying it!
that aquarium in the street is sick. What great idea !
Do you think it's overkill to have the 3? I already have the 16mm and 35mm, and the 23mm is always on my mind.

Any post processing done on these photos? If you don't, what settings you had ? Film simulation , white balance ? I really like the colours
Thanks Jason. The exposure settings are on the Screen but for colors I used my own Lightroom Presets. You can find a link to them in my description.

very cool! any particular reason you were shooting with such small aperture and high ISO? cheers!
Was it so high? It was auto ISO (6400 is the max). But one reason is fast shutter speeds. If I want to freeze motion I need a fast shutter speed.
