- HP Umpire Ron Kulpa left Saturday 5/22/21's Brewers-Reds game after suffering a head injury when a 93.4-mph Sonny Gray sinker deflected off catcher Tyler Stephenson's mitt and into Kulpa's facemask. Report: www.closecalls...
Now THIS is a good broadcast team.
There's a hell of lot more to changing into plate gear than taking off your shirt and putting it back on. Most umpires have different pants for working the plate. The pants are cut with more room in the crotch and hips to allow for squatting. The lower half of the pant legs have a roomier cut to allow for the shin guards. He has to put ball bags on. And finally, he puts on shoes that have a kevlar toe and a kevlar flap to protect his instep. An umpire with his gear properly stowed and organized.can make the change in under 10 minutes.
Don’t forget the protective cup!
Plus some type of long underwear so that his legs won’t get torn up from the shin guard straps.
Never managed to change in less than 15 mins, guess I'm a little bit slow))). But I also put on knee braces, that also takes some time...
@@mattvanderveen4716 I wore a pair of compression shorts that wicked away moisture and had a pocket for a cup. I also wore knee length socks to protect my legs. I wore the compression shorts for every game as well as the socks.
@@jhoepken Like he said, he's gotta put his ball bags on.
Hopefully his strike zone is better because of it I’m still pissed for that strike 3 call on Ortiz
It's not. He hosed the Cards yesterday.
The commentators explained that he has to take his shirt off in order to put his protector on
The catcher and pitcher talking
Catcher: I said I wanted a slider
Pitcher: Oh I thought you wanted a fastball
“I can do anything I want!” Ron Kulpa, 2019.
Not saying this was intentional, but he pissed off a lot of people that day.
Ya, he’s a jack ass. Don’t feel bad for him one bit
If only it was Angel Hernandez
Wow!! All the douchebags are in here.
Great role model you must be
Compassionate comment
Stay classy douche
Wishing bad tidings on others puts YOU on the wrong side of karma.
Met Nic Lentz at a Umpire Clinic right before covid. Really great guy.
Yeah I have met Nic Lentz too and he is a really really good guy.
Been there and done that but only at varsity level. Ron is one of my guys i like to watch.
Kulpa is a huge douche
🤣
Kulpa deserves 10 more of these LOL
Get well soon, Brother-in-Blue.
I second that. Anyone who has ever called a few games knows that feeling. It doesn't have to be a major league pitch either. It can rattle you pretty good even at a high school level., so I know he felt a good pop.
@@macbrewer6899 Karma Kulpa, you have to expect fate when you're a worthless dickwad to players and managers.
@@jasonbradham1172 absolutely
That sucks big time. I hope Kulpa is going to be okay. It looked like a cross up. But Kulpa like many of the other umpires hit behind the plate this year look like they aren't in the slot enough so their heads are over the plate more than they should be increasing the risk for things like this to happen. Hopefully he will be alright and back soon.
The slot position makes pitches on the outside corner harder to call. As it is, MLB umpires miss 1.0 to 1.5 innings worth of pitches every night.
I see where you are coming from. However, per the MLB, umpires get on average 96% of pitches correct. That number of correct calls is only increasing as more and more younger officials move into the MLB ranks. These umpires are all taught to work in the slot. It has been proven time and again that working from the slot is not only the safest but best spot to call pitches. I would say your point has validity for many newer officials who have not seen as many pitches but these guys in the MLB have seen so many pitches before they even got to this point that seeing a pitch on the low outside corner is a drop in the bucket for them. They know exactly where they are looking to see if that ball crossed the plate. Of course there will still be mistakes but it is such a low percentage of actual bad calls that the slot is the best position to be in.
Kulpa is obviously not a great umpire but I hope he’s ok, no one deserves to go through that!
All the best to Kulpa, but I am curious, how was that pitched called under the given circumstances? You took out the ball/strike caller and it was close to the top of the zone. Looks like a ball was awarded to the batter.
When they resumed play with the new plate umpire, they announced, and he signaled, two balls and no strikes.
@@davej3781 unless it's in the zone, then it's a blown call if you call ball.
He said ball bags! Haha!
Hey oh!
Ump is a pzzy.
Use the balloon protection of years gone by and this goes away!
ok so honest question from a guy who's never been behind the plate: these guys have high tech material in those masks along with serious padding, how the heck can it possibly hurt? Yes I have seen the masks in person, actually held it and checked it out....what am I missing.
He was hit in the face with a 90 mph solid rock? Lol what is there not to understand. His brain got rattled inside his skull. The mask can’t protect you from a pitch to the face. Notice how it’s rounded to DEFLECT the ball. Not made to take one square.
Looks like it was done by pitcher catcher on purpose. What rickochette? The catcher was moving out of the way and missed a fastball ...major league catcher.. the best of the best can't catch or get close to a pitch? .Moving out of the way?
Ron Kulpa just left the Red Sox-White Sox game. Be safe, Ron.
Hopefully he is okay.
When baseball fans see things like this happen I believe we all think the same thing.....why wasn’t it angel hernandez?!?
Kulpa is an ass too. He’s put on many a display of douchebaggery.
@@jeremyrench4592 yes he is and he has. I guess the perfect situation would be the ball ricocheting off of kulpa, also whacking Hernandez, and then when he runs in to check on them, joe west tripping over their prone bodies. but a game with all three of them on the field?? YIKERS!!
Oh geez, talk about nightmare scenario if those three were calling the same game. Add CB Bucknor(sp)? to the mix and you have a total shit show.
No. We all don't.
I'm for seeing bad umps replaced. Not hurt.
Well sometimes the only way to replace them is to get them hurt.
Did the calls get better?
Umpires spend time in a prone position? Perhaps he meant vulnerable.
I hope the ump’s ok, but it’s good for umps and pitchers to be reminded once in awhile of just how much pain a 95mph fastball can inflict?
It almost looked intentional. I know that it probably was not. Pitcher and catcher look like they just got crossed up.
An “Awful umpire” compilation brought me here. 🤔
Hope Kulpa’s all right. I can imagine the Astros fans watching on TV, cheering, and clapping an injured Kulpa laying on the ground injured since he ejected former Astros manager, AJ Hinch two years ago.
Astros in everyone's mouth these days! Go stros!
Why does MLB not have a backup umpire just in case something like this plays out?
Money. 15 new jobs at a six figure salary + flights + hotels + per diems = not cheap.
It's all about money. They're not paying an umpire to fly to a game, put up in hotel and pay him to just sit.
It happens what, maybe a dozen times a season? Pay an extra ump for every crew including flight/room/perdiem etc to save an extra 10 minutes in 0.25% of all games?
so in situations like this where the HP umpire gets injured, is it always the 2nd base umpire who takes over? my guess would be because the ump at 3rd base was the HP ump thw previous game and the 1st base ump is at HP next game
Yes, I've only ever seen U2 take over.
Couldn’t have happened to a more deserving guy! Hopefully this injury will teach Kulpa respect.
I hope he heals well. Tough to not be gun shy after that.
GUN! How dare you use that word my non gender specific child could read that and get scared.
You couldn't pay me enough to be an umpire.
Joe West and Angel Hernandez do it strictly for their EGOS and The Power Trip it provides them.
@@TheStuport How about attention?
I've been hit in the mask by 95 plenty of times with a hockey style and traditional style masks, never felt like it was a big deal, certainly not enough to knock me down.
difference is Kulpa is a wimp!!
Maybe taking acting lessons from LeBron James
"These umpires are constantly in an incredibly prone position." To call the low strike?
Classy
Way to be compassionate
Hope he will be ok
Listening to people do unscripted commentary is torture. This guy makes so many naive, ignorant or just flat out incorrect statements. Yes, live TV is hard and mistakes happen but this is brutal. Reminds me of the nightmare of tv news reporters commenting on car chases, accidents or fires as they happen. Best to just turn off the sound.
I didn't see it hit him.
Damn this ump can’t catch a break
Neither can any honest team playing in a game umpired by him
Notice how trainers from both teams ran out there. Funny how teams will jaw on an umpire until an umpire gets hurt then they all come running to help.
Look at his mitt and where it is before the pitch and the whole time. There is no outside target. He does not even setup out side . Disgusting..regardless of how bad an ump can be ..where is the respect for the game and wach other
The catcher looks sick.
Wow the just traded Willy Adames was at bat during all this.
Pitcher and catcher did a good job hitting that ump...he probably wasnt calling strikes 4 them and they wantd 2 teach him a lesson!! Nice, good job..sometimes these ump need 2 be taught a lesson, especially that sorry ump Angel hernandez...worst ump in baseball!!!! Period!!
Sure that wiped that stupid smirk he always has right off his face!
That stupid smirk is permanent been there since grade school.😿
Oh no, not again... Third time this year...
So is this a reason to cheat the Brewers at every turn?? Too soon? I don't think so.
Wasn't he the "I can do whatever I want" guy?
Yes he is. Dudes a complete tool
Need to bring back the Ump Shield, these guys are getting hurt badly
Do you mean those balloon (foam rubber) chest protectors that American League umpires wore as late as the 1980's?
@@byrd56 Yes that’s what I was referring to but it does need to be modified in some way. I’m seeing more ups getting hit in the mask and getting concussions this year.
I was there today
Same.
Could have been you - thank God you're okay.
He didn't get hit in the face, he got hit in the mask
I'm convinced, all toughness is gone from the game.
The commentators literally talked about how back in the day an ump literally died getting hit by a pitch? Also I assume this is an invitation for you to take a 90mph fastball to the chin? Im convinced all braincells are gone from your head,.
@@mango2450 that's what the mask is for dip shit.
@@prettyjaysays Cause a mask stops the entire energy of a 90 mph baseball and doesn't slam you in the fact and send shockwaves through your whole head? If you believe that you should be ecstatic to take a 90mph ball to the mask to prove your point
@@mango2450 way to like your own comment dude.
That's weird. That shouldn't knock a guy out like that but I guess with your head sometimes it's hard to predict? I don't know but I caught a lot of games up to a pretty high level and took a lot of foul tips off the mask. It can surprise you and confuse you a little bit but it shouldn't really hurt or knock you out of a game
I think it really depends on where and what angle it gets you. When I was umpiring college games I took a foul tip off a 92mph fastball and my mask went one way and the ball went the other and I was fine; a few days later I took a mid 70s change up directly between the eyes and my mask stayed right where it was and the ball fell straight to the ground and I had a concussion with symptoms that lasted over a week.
This one looks like it caught him pretty square right on the chin where the mask didn’t really give way to absorb the energy so it’s almost like getting a left hook to the chin.
The umpire isn't expecting it and doesn't have a chance to defend himself from the impact. He caught a 93 mph fastball flush in the mask and on the full. The shock of the impact still goes through your head and neck.
Foul tips also take some more velocity off the ball - not always a ton, but just by having contact between bat and ball, you slow the ball down
Umpires who take pitches directly usually do worse than with fouls, though fouls like this can be very serious as well.
Also keep in mind that as a matter of physics, energy does not grow linearly with speed - such as how 55mph car crashes are dramatically more damaging than 45, and 65 dramatically more than that
So unless you were catching professional level velocity consistently in the mid-90s, it's likely none of the foul balls you took were even close to as damaging as this pitch.
Mid 90’s mph pal
@@mlbonfox8199 mid 90s? Oh dear! I'm not saying it's fun and maybe I never got one in just the right place. I can say I experienced some brief disorientation but that's about as far as it goes. I don't think for one second this umpire is making it up. I just think it's unusual for him to be knocked out like that. Pal
The impact of the glove knocked him out not the ball. Crazy to be standing in a position like that and take a shot to the face. Probably jarred his brain a little.
Couldn't have happened to a better person than Ron " I can do what I want " Kulpa. LoL bwahaaaaaa
Kevin Pillar took one to the face without a facemask and walked off the field
That look intentional by the catcher.
Cross up. No way intentional.
If you look at the catchers demeanor during the delay - it seems like he was embarrassed and remorseful. I don’t think it was on purpose
it did, but i think the pitcher - catcher call got mixed up, looked like they were discussing the pitch during the med assistance.
In no fucking way
get lost... cross-up 100%
Too bad it wasn’t angel Hernandez behind the dish
Another reason for automated balls and strikes.
Please explain the umpire's position, stance, equipment in the automated scenario.
@@TPinesGold To call -fair/foul, tags plays, interference/obstruction, (basically anything that can legitimately reviewed and doesn't invoke "judgement') the umpire would stand behind AND to the side of the catcher behind the batter, inline to adjust and observe the opposite foul line if needed and turned to approximately 45˚ to his adjacent foul line in order to be positioned to make those calls as well for continuity of play.
Or we can have Ron stand back there without a mask so he can see the strike zone better.
Cupcake. When a catcher takes a foul tip straight to the face, he gets up shakes it off and calls the next pitch
Yea took many 90 plus to the face. Get those old fools out of there
Yes, because a foul tip slows down the ball...
@@rickhaavisto9023 only so.... slightly. You're welcome
He got smacked in the face by the catchers mitt. Ball never hit him. Watch slo-mo
Lmfao. Does the P stand for Pea brain?
Take care of your umpires. Better to change the umpires.
X
The FLUCKING catcher bailed on the pitch. It's as obvious as a day is long!!!!
Especially with runners on base up by 1
@@MH-Tesla hey never said anything about intention!!!!!!! I SAID HE BAILED ON THE PITCH.....commenting on his APTITUDE. Do you know this word?
Wear a quality helmet. Dump the mask.
Side vision is severely limited with the hockey helmet and they get extremely hot inside, that’s why you don’t see all umpires wearing them, especially in the summer heat
No one hopes he's okay haha
Kulpa sucks.
Total lack of class Justin
That what your boyfriends say about you.
@@jonathanfox1543 if I had a boyfriend I’m sure he’d also say Kulpa sucks. Just common sense. Stay triggered little guy.
He does suck at umpiring... But fucked up saying it on this video. So many other vids you can say that comment on.
Good kulpa needs to get the fuck outta mlb
That was purposely done. No way in hell you can change my mind
Don't care if you change your mind, that was karma for Kulpa
That was intentional AF!
That's what I was thinking
I was gunna say it to...the way he moved out of the way....
Karma for Kulpa here plain and simple folks. You dance with the devil, you get burned
How can you touch a umpire there rules say you CANNOT TOUCH Umpire so why is people touching a umpire. They what to be center of tbe game so let be the bigger and be ready the throw. There are umpires not people on tbe the baseball field
Grow up
Punctuation?
Moron
Not applicable in the event of an injury.
Um, what are you trying to say? Your comment doesn’t make sense dude.
