Nice video, easy fixes are always good to know, and now I know. Thanks. I doubt Dave spent too much time trying to fix it. He’s a good guy but he always seems to be “fixing” things on his main boat.
Johnson / Evinrude 9.9/15 h.p. is one of the very best small outboards ever designed! The lower units are BULLET-PROOF!!! whereas, a 15 Mercury motor has (for many years too!) an under-sized housing and an inferior upper water pump and seal housing! And they never redesigned it either!!! OMC was KING!!!!!
Got to love it when the fix is this easily found and remedied. Usually not the case in my experience. Was wondering that instead of an o-ring, (that in my mind would likely easily fail again in the future either by wear or being forced off the shaft as it ages and stretches), would a open end ("c" style) spring washer that would clamp into that groove be a better option (hack) when repairing these. Or even a combination of a smaller thickness o-ring with a spring washer to make sure it stayed in place be a better fix. In your experience would this work, or would it lead to other problems. I always look forward to your vids as I learn so much from them. Thanks!.
Enjoyed the video. Question for you. What is the easiest and most reliable older 2 stroke 15hp outboard? I am looking to buy a used one and will most likely need to work on it a t some point as well. Thanks!
The late 90's Yamaha, Evinrude / johnson 1994 or later or Late 80's Suzuki's Remember Salt water destroy's any motor. ""FRESH WATER MOTOR is the key. kb
@@kodibassInsideoutboards Thanks for the reply! Unfortunately I will be using it in Salt Water but will try to find one that was used in freshwater to start with so it will hopefully be a bit less worn to start with.
Had 2 questions think hammer asked the first why not an eclip.2nd question is it feasible at all for you to send a motor to the lower 48. Thanks, really enjoy watching your videos.
I thought you were gonna find one of those broken throttle cams (CPS), but it turned out to be just a missing oring (CRS)! I finally saw one of these broken plastic throttle cams on one of my 15hps. I think I aggravated the condition by attempting to adjust that WOT screw on the cam which strained the lovely plastic and broke the cam...
Thanks for bringing that possible problem spot to our attention. Any motor will do fine as the next victim. Don't you have a Merc 200 (20 Hp) that you could work on ? Plenty of those around waiting for TLC. By the way, the French word for spark plug is "bougie" (boogee) which translates to candle.
Go with the 49. I'm playing with my old Johnson which I'm a bit shy to say. ha-ha First thing I did on this new to me TD-20 was to fix the sticky pull start. By Golly I got it. This motor for a 1947 is blowing my mine on how it looks like it was taken out of the water in the 50's to sat in a barn this whole time. It looks like the original spark plugs still in it. Crazy
Ya know that happened to me about 2 years ago and I wound up putting an E-clip on it because the o-ring kept falling or getting pushed off ! I hope the customer wasn’t to pissed and if I know you , you probably lent him a different outboard ! I’m thinking I’d like to see a 49 video or completely off the wall a Frankensteiner ! Surface drive chain driven permanent mounted with a rudder ! Lol
Hey there, so I set my cam roller to spec, and when it’s cold it won’t start I try and set it and it’s warm runs perfectly through forward and reverse throttle up and put it to slow doesn’t quit. What could it be? Thank you
love them little motors i work on them here in ohio buy them none running fix em and resell them good little $800-$1100 motors the run grate and what seems like for every lol any of them older 5 1/2-40hp sell fast in ohio
THANK U , thank u, thank u. I only had my cheap-o mini truck camera But had try an get it on film, We actually do not get to see many because of fog, clouds. It was a treat 4 sure. kb
This motor reminds me of the worst outboard I ever had a 1975 9.9 Johnson would get water onto the spark plugs come to find out they produced a whole run of bad motors in 9.9 & 15 where the gasket flange was to narrow & leaked water into the cylinder
Thank you for sharing some of or the best outboard repair videos there is. From a to z you always do an outstanding job.

The 15's are my favorite OMC's!! Yall can keep all that snow!! If we see snow here in Central Texas everyone freaks out!! Keep up the good work!!
Yep' stay warm just watched the Texas forecast. 18. kb
@@kodibassInsideoutboards yep, we can’t deal with that stuff down here! Lol

E/C Clips work fine. but I could not find a stainless steel one. It's a rule I kinda go by. No plain steel in my outboards however small. haha kb
