If you was around close here in jacksboro Texas, I would give you two of those 9.9 & 15 HP Johnson starter and brackets. Keep those great videos coming
Kodi just about every 9.9-15HP here has blocked drain hole. It is one of my regular rituals to pick the gunk out.Like you I use an extended drill attachmaent and long drills.I spend the time and always clean the original drain hole. Ive repaired the bulging cracks too,Ha!.Good video for everybody to see how you handle it...TOT62
Kodi I saw a starter bracket for a 15 Johnson on EBay and they wanted $140. I set my 15hp Johnson up with a electric start without the solenoid and it works just fine. Thanks for sharing
I never knew that the metal impeller centers could come delaminated! And I didn’t realize salt could be packed so tightly either. Thanks for the video.
Cool. Always want to be wrong about my grommet diagnosis. I suppose you could pull out one of the powerhead screws to see if it was gooped up also. If so, seems like a good chance someone has already done the grommets on this engine. That damn drain hole is so important! I can't even imagine how many hours I have poked, blown, scraped to get that passage/drain way clear and open on so many of these engines. People don't realize that when that hole is plugged, the inner cavity of the exhaust housing stays full of water....Water that will turn to salt deposits and can end up in the powerhead. All that salt build up around the water pump is a direct result of the salt water being trapped inside. As far as those garbagerators, it breaks my heart when we did stupid things like that. I just can't imagine that plastic crap saved much over the conventional aluminum body bullet proof carbs. The only benefit of them is the plastic bowl that doesn't rust and complete access to all the idle passages when the plastic top is removed. But, when was the last time anyone ever had an issue with idle passages in the conventional aluminum body carb! We all do things that aren't the best practice sometimes to get things running, but I fear that using goop on those plastic covers will create many more issues that it will solve by oozing out and blocking passages. The final insult of those garbagerators is the ridiculous prices on the CPS replacement parts. You are soooo right Kodi, those electric starter bypass brackets, along with the ring gear flywheels, are "gold" these days and priced accordingly. Please don't just "give those items away" buddy, and always have a few on hand for yourself. Finally, it looks like someone has put the wrong driveshaft in that engine, wonder if it was converted to long shaft. That driveshaft should not have an oring groove up top. The lower powerhead seal housing has two seals in it, the smaller one takes the place of the driveshaft oring. Wont hurt anything, but makes it more likely that the splines will get rusted/seized though.
Hi Kodi, yep modifications can work but can also go bad. Nothing like good old metal to fix stuff and have it last. The problem now days is the cost of metal has hit the roof and the quality is not very good because people and using old scrap metal and melting it down to make new parts. Lost it's temper and cracks easy.
there's a lot of those motors with those starter brackets down here in fl. :D oh and I always use a solenoid when I convert them, cause those starters still pull a lot of amps and burn up switches.
Yeah those brackets are hard to find in NWI north west Indiana and they go for a pretty penny too I wish I had a couple of those they are gold around here 👍🏻🤘🏻
any advice for a 15 that pumps water irregularly? gromets ok impeller is new. do these motors ever have plugged channels where you need to remove the head?
If as U say the grometts r ok ( replaced,,.trimmed..inspected)? Yes' if your motor is a salt water motor they can plug like cement. If mine I would pull the head & look around those passages. If they R coorrodid & full of salt it will be your indecator for the rest of the engine. kb
I have a 2020 Merc 20 Hp short shaft outboard. I have been told that it cannot be fitted with a trim and tilt kit. Do you know if I add trim and tilt to this engine.
ive had mine fill with mud/sand and pump slow. I flush head then with water hose thru water tube. hope iam not hurting anything doing that and hope most junk comes out.
Had a friend took him to the sea...Was a hard trip...Next time I seen I toed him ,fixed that resin carb with a wife beater tee shirt that is...Covered the breather...He went to Cuba two ports...Took the shirt off breather and she wouldn't run... Replaced and No Problem...8hp Yamaha I had always had to have a stainless wire I pee hole..If I works it works...Bless from sv No problem
Us common folk need more marine motor learnen Kodi !!!😂 Couldn’t you just drill out the original drain hole in the foot instead of drilling a new one?? Thanks 🙏 👍
