I worked at Top Gear and sold Bob the guitar, also gave Tony Bacon much of the info for his Reverb story on the guitar. Thanks for giving Top Gear a shout out, it was a small shop but just as important in the '70s London scene as Selmer, Sound City etc. BTW the TOM bridge was added some time '74 between our temp repair and the Meyer mods. One thing Tony omitted from his Reverb piece was that we pencilled "Riddum" and "Trebull" on the oversized switch chip, highly politically incorrect these days but Bob had a laugh when he collected the guitar. Also as an aside, Aston Barrett purchased a Gibson EB3 bass the same day Bob bought the Special. Never have seen him play it though.
woah, did you really met Bob Marley in the 70s?
When u said top Gear I thought u meant the show I was gonna say I love that show
A great story...cheers from th island of Guam.
Man I envy u! I met Bob Marley in the 70's(I was a child at the time)at a neighbour's house. He even played football(soccer) with us,the group of kids that was there. The man loved children and had the heart of a child(beautiful!). He never "acted like the superstar that he was". If you came and saw him and didn't know who he was, you'd think that he was just another guy from the neighbourhood. Very humble, down to Earth, man.
What was the price Bob paid for his beauty ?
Just curious
"One good thing about music when it hits you, you feel no pain. So hit me with music." - Bob Marley
Bob Marley has been a idol of mine since I was 13. This guitar is my holy grail. About half the guitars in my collection are P90s. Such a great tone. Love the natural looking instruments myself. With those aluminum pickguard and switch selector plate this guitar is everything I love about guitars.
I have the same feeling as you my friend, I started playing the guitar thanks to Bob, this guitar is the holy grail that I have always wanted to have, but it is completely impossible
@@peppymus Nothing is impossible! You could customize your own Les Paul Special or have someone build another copy of it. We can dream 😄
Haha, never ever expected to see this model on the channel, I love it !!
So cool to see that one on the show. This might be the closest I’ll ever get from one of these. The coolest and most iconic Special ever. Thanks for this, cheers from Brasil
I love that one of the greatest guitarist/songwriters of the latter 20th century had to be told at one point to tune his guitar. That story just makes me happy
The Wailers were famous for their vocal harmonies. For the story to imply upgraded tuners have anything to do with being tone deaf is silly.
Bob would be my choice for musicians that have passed on who I would pick to see again live. I have much respect for Skpper!!
Fantastic guitar. Natural headstocks on Gibsons will always look better than the black veneers to me.
these are now 15 thousand dollars...When it came out I played it here in NYC at Mannys music ...on famous west 48 street. IT WAS HONESTLY ONE OF THE BEST GUITARS I EVER PLAYED....THIS IS NO ORDINARY SPECIAL!!! At the time 20 years ago it was more then 4k But let me tell you IT STILL HAUNTS ME TO THIS DAY! Just an unbelievable guitar that can do any thing...
Huh... funny I was just talking to my coworker about music and he's never heard of Marley! Wild world we live in man...
Greetings and well wishes from Utah!
Trogly’s in the HOUSE!!!
Ramiro in the house
@@sgt.grinch3299 Ramiro and Sarge are just about always the first ones in the house!
Love the history lessons of the guitars and the special attention to detail. Great show Trog 🤘🎸
Obsessed with Marley guitar - strums on beat. Woof.
Now this is a find! Awesome documentation of a legendary reissue.
I have #23 with the wall display, cert, t-shirt, custom shop case, case candy...etc. Bought it 15 years ago and it's still my most prized possession. They used to pop up every couple of years, now they NEVER show up for sale. Many years ago, I asked Gibson support how many they made, and they told me the original run was supposed to be 200, but they only made 100 for the first run and partially completed the second run because of low dealer interest, so there were likely less than 200 ever made. Great axe and undoubtedly one of the rarest Custom Shop artist models. Thanks for the detailed vid!
Your documentations are phenomenal keep up the good work
I always have so much fun when he does the middle position reading .
I remember when those guitars where for sale. I sooo wanted to buy one but couldn't afford it at the time. Another great video!
what an elegant finish. thanks
FINALLY!!!! Bob and his “justice axe” gets some Trogly love!!!!! Thanks Austin!!! Much love!
You come up with some very interesting pieces Austin. Keep up the good work. Always look forward to your posts.
This is the coolest Les Paul IMO, the simplicity and gorgeous natural finish, plus those P90s, if I wanted a LP, this would be the only one for me.
Austin! What a great guitar to review and document! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!
OMG I have also been hunting this down for years!! AMAZING!!!!!!
Very interesting guitar I didn't know about this thing at all. Loved the history lesson thanks
Trogly's in the HOUSE!!!
You beat me to it. Well played
Greg in the house
Oh my Greg, you made the Podium for tonight’s episode. Earning a Bronze Medal is something to be proud of. Well done Brother.
Greg, Sarge and Ramiro, Greetings
Sorry for being late, glad you went ahead and started without me......................LOL
No problem HK
Been waiting for this episode a lot! Always curious about this guitar, that's my dream les paul.
That certificate is killer!🔥🤘👍
That baby spanks hard, God I love p90s, ❤️ this guitar too!!! What a great find brother 👍👍
Bob Marleys custom shop tribute seems like a fantastic fiddle to base a custom of my own off of. I really like most of the specs, very unique as well. A guy can dream
WOW ! One can really appreciate that woodgrain , absolutely stunning and seems to be very natural being a one peice body n all
I love single cut specials - best sounding guitars in history. I love some Bob Marley, too!. I'd rock that beast all day long.
u can...for 15 grand
Some indirect positive vibes in these grim times. Thank's trog :)
I would love to own one of those one day!
Sweet guitar! Loving the P90s 🙂
That’s thing is awesome I never know they even made one. Marley is one of the greats.
My favorite Gibson I wish they’d release these
If I'm not mistaken, the photos of Bob Marley in my coffee table book of classic rock stars are the first pictures I recall seeing of this type of Les Paul model.
Always loved the look of bobs sig
That back is crazy good!
Please do another Murphy lab, keep up the good work Trogly 🎸😎👍🏼
I've tried to find a Marley type les paul and have gotten nowhere. Good to see the history, thanks
That is a kick ass guitar. LOVE IT.
Such an awesome guitar!! I love how the wood grain on the back kinda looks like a lions mane!
I love the woodgrain on the headstock on this one
Watching this video as a BMW fan, I just imagine how it was playing other thing than the reggae rhythm that we used to listen. It sounds great. I just imagine how the “Concrete Jungle” solo might sound with this guitar. Speechless.
Nice Les Paul but I think his neck-thru Washburn Hawk (wing series) is beautiful.
Hopefully. Thats one for the museum! I know it was pricey,? But that's something that deserves to be remembered, and taken care of by someone thst truly loves and cares for his guitars.
It, like the rest of his guitars, need to be gigged regularly by a weekend warrior.
Oh Boy did I enjoy that! Thanks Trogly
Cool guitar. I like how the original TV yellow also remains around the headstock edges.
That’s actually binding that was added around the headstock not tv yellow finish. Definitely a unique feature.
I don’t understand - was his guitar tv yellow before? Whoever customised it wrapped it up in wood?
Hi Austin great revue, and acquisition. You mentioned a UA-cam Bob Marley guitar playing video. Would you please provide a link? Thanks
The 2012 Documentary, Marley is wonderfully done....It's a must-watch for all Marley fans and anyone looking for a deep dive on Bob
Propaganda is within that one, I suggest time will tell, an earlier, unbiased report
Listen to the live album 'Babylon by Bus'. There are some wicked riffs on that LP & fantastic tunes. It really captures the vibe of a Wailers gig from back in the late 70's.
dream guitar!
I'm a reggae guitarist (Sticky Rhythms is my band). I have the Epiphone Bob Marley Les Paul (which is also a great guitar). You definitely need to be playing reggae on that guitar but reggae can include blues and rock style lead. It is just the rhythm that has that unique technique that is kind of specialized.
By the way, Bob Marley played mostly rhythm guitar. The solos are not him playing. His lead guitarists were either Al Anderson, Junior Marvin or Donald Kinsey (depending on the time) who are all top players who you should definitely check out.
epiphone is a $ 500 at best the best guitar for reggae is my tele road worn or my steinberger synapse and i have a bob marley replica signed by Al Anderson Junior Marvin Donald Kinsey and Aston Barret but the tele has a better sound for me
@@i-tiyahman6519 I could see how someone might find a Tele suitable for reggae, especially the sharpness of the sound for the scratchy rhythm, but I prefer Les Paul for reggae, both rhythm and lead. I combine my Les Paul with a valve amp to bring out a crisper tone and find it has a nicer sound that way.
My Epiphones have never let me down. I got the Bob Marley one and a 3 pick Black Beauty and I would not trade either of them. I have an Ibanez which is also nice for reggae. But it probably also comes down to personal preference and what you are used to. I learnt guitar on a Les Paul, so have preferred them ever since.
I have been waiting for that
I am not the biggest Gibson fan but ever since I started playing guitar 35 years ago I have always liked the flat Les Pauls a lot.The Specials are just great guitars and I love the ones with fat necks.
that good basebell neck huh
@theArchive1O I have no reason liking big necks either up until I was 25 or so I only played a 72 strat that had a small neck and I have average if not a little small hands too. It's crazy some of the different stuff we end up liking and playing.
@@tacob69 Haha I just turned 25. After 5 years of not Playing im back to playing but w headless Ibanez guitar. Rock on
Norlin necks are the best.
@theArchive1O that's awesome you are back into it.I quit a couple years in my 30's but I'm 50 now and play more than I did 30 years ago.Keep on rocking also!!!
Yes
I have one of the GC 2018-19 honey burst specials that always reminded me of his guitar (troglys review is great)
I love it sounds great all around.
Very cool. It looks a lot like my 80s the Paul made over. I really. Dig the P90s.
Yesterday lil wayne today bob marley. If tomorrow is willie nelson, then my blunt smoking while watching your show will really come full circle
Can you imagine a "Trigger" signature though? It'd be cool, but how would you even do it from a manufacturing point of view?
Full circle will be when he reviews a Warren Haynes signature
It's really cool
AWESOME
That should go in yer museum
You need to talk about some of the other amazing custom shop sig models from this era. Maybe even try to buy a Dickey Betts 57 Goldie or a 59 Gary Rossington Les Paul. The Allen Collins Korina Explorer is a very rare model also. It's just a thought .......
THANK YOU TROGLY!!!!
Thanks for that review!
I had to rewatch to see my questions answered because I missed it first time around. Those were, what wood is the body made of and is that one piece? I really love that look!
11:57
The Bob Marley Lester reminds me of my The Paul, I had for many years. Mine came with Dirty Finger Pickups
Same body.
That’s the only relict guitar I’ve ever seen that I like.
I don’t give a fig about the celebrity association, but it is always neat to see a unique Les Paul.
Could you be love, wo yeah, and be loved
honestly just like with old cars. i think they are more interesting when people customize them and make them their own. this is more interesting looking than most ”normal” les pauls :)
You mean a "Standard"?
I totally agree 👍
@@alwaysopen7970
Same difference...we all know what he's talking about,well..I did anyway
I bet Troggy smoked a big ol' blunt in celebration & honor of Bob Marley before videoing this clip! 😵💫🚬 👍
Austin is in His House 🏠 of AWESOME Guitars 🎸 😎
today the last sold was 15200 $ to have the BM 102 number .....Many modifications and long road for the original bob les paul special ( 1955-1960) ...some details forget .....before Roger Meyer 78 , dan Armstrong already replace the original head mechanic before she arrive to TOP GEAR shop in spring 73 ...and many other ....i like to remember how was bob's guitar at the beginning factory output...rarer than 2002 copy
Man that grain is sooo nice!!
Austin be Jammin’ mon
Trogly wasn't cannabinized for the demo as far as I can tell.
the p90s sound great! i think i like them better than paf style humbuckers.
When I visited Bob Marley’s house a few years ago they had an Epiphone version on display
Never heard much of a p90 before...awesome is all I can say
Ever hear of Leslie West?
Bob Marley Legend legacy 🙏🏿☝🏿 . Great share vidéo. Thank you 👍🏿
Christ, you either have tons of folks emailing you about these rare birds or you spend an asston of time searching for these rarities ahah! It’s an awesome show no doubt! Very cool finds Austin! 🤙
The only gibson I've ever wanted. Super jealous. Wish I had the money. But I got his acoustic from guild so that will have to do I guess.
Hey Trog, what do you play when your just playing for yourself?
@The Trogly's Guitar Show I think the final modification of this guitar was done in late 1979 after Bob Marley performed at Harvard Stadium that year and before he performed in Santa Barbara.
Great review Trogly. You should've used some bar chords and blues licks. That would've given you more of the "Reggae style"
Very Awesome!!
it reminds me of a chocolate tootsie pop. the figuring is very cool
Emphasis the up beat strum. How’s the sustain?
I just woke up and I'm watching a Bob Marley documentary on Showtime I picked my phone up and this is trogly's latest episode. The planets are in alignment I think
You got Serial #36. That's how old he was when he died. Nice coincidence.
The headstock had a plastic veneer that probably get stripped off leaving the Gibson , My 64 Sg jr had that same thing happen.
Wow Thats Cool Trogladites ,i don't get Into the whole Signiture Thingy , But a Bob Marly one That would be cool and One I could see owning , Take Kare
The third eye bit. The first eye is the original poker chip. The second one was the temporary quick fix one. Then the football shape makes three.
That big ding near the strap, maybe because of the guitar cable that put inside the strap before going to the jack input.
Most of us do that when playin on stage, so if we accidentally step on the cable, it won't fell off so easily
Or have metal bits on your strap which may rub against it. It's merely cosmetic.
Much as I love trog he wouldn't know that as he's ever played a live gig bless him x
@@DavidBrown-ys2cl yeah, he's guitar nerd, not a player.
Kaya !!
Hope youre keeping this one
Bolan rocks!!
Great back
Ohhh, so that's where "eye n eye will see you through" came from! ")
Thanks for coming out folks, I'm here all week! Tell your friends! He...hello? Is this thing working?
