The '76-77 punk 'revolution' seemed a damp squib to me. I expected it to take over like beat music in the '60s, but the charts seemed to stay mostly full of Boney M and disco! Then Thatcher got in, punks younger brothers the New Romantics morphed into style over substance yuppies, and the 'suits' took over the music biz... And here we are.
Punk’s not a musical movement - it’s a state of mind . Climate change protesters /Greenpeace / anyone that actually turns their concerns into actions are todays punks IMO
In 1977 I saw them live and got to go backstage after the gig. Just a few days later was invited to do a live radio interview with them. They were proper down to earth lads with big hearts and Sid apart were good musicians. The energy of that gig still lives with me. They never took themselves seriously. Those who criticise them just don’t get it.
In 1982 The Dead Kennedys toured Australia and it was my first live concert as a 16 year old and it left a long lasting impression. Holiday in Cambodia, California ubber alles, Too drunk to fuck are absolute bangers
@@glennrandall7468 I've seen them a handful of times, once on the mall in Washington DC. Jello pointed to the Washington Monument and referred to it as "The great Klans man in the sky"

This was my era. Lived it, was part of it and yes it was the best time of my life! It would be hard to re create this era it was fantastic! I wish I had a time machine and go back and re live this again there's been nothing like this since!
My understanding is that the line 'Cheap Holidays in other people's misery' alludes to cheap package holidays in Spain during the time it was still under the rule of General Franco - a nationalist dictator who seized power following the spanish civil war in 1936. During the war he was assisted by Nazi troops from Germany and Fascists from Italy and overthrew the democratically elected government. He only died in 1975. Brits regularly holidayed in Spain from the late 1950's onward.
There are some Dead Kennedys that would hit hard today: Let's Lynch the Landlord, Kill the Poor, and Chemical Warfare are all good class struggle anthems.
Side 1, song 1 of Never Mind The Bollocks. Dead Kennedys were a much more refined socio-political message with talented musicians. I grew up with this music and still love it
My friend bought “Pretty vacant “ when he was 14. He played it at home and his dad walked in, lifted it off the turntable and snapped it in half. He threw it in the bin and told my mate “Your not playing that rubbish in this house”. My mate laughs about it now.
Listen to Stiff Little Fingers: Alternative Ulster, Suspect Device, Silver Lining, Piccadilly Circus, Hits and Misses (I consider this the first Punk Rock feminist song), At the Edge, Nobody's Hero, Gotta Get Away, and Wasted Life.
One of the greatest albums of the times!! It WAS a vibe, it was a movement!!! I can’t remember a similar moment in music. The ONLY political music I can listen to!

It was a great time to be young in the UK .. I was a teenager . Anarchy was the order of the day . Altho times were hard , we fought back as much we cld .. i only wish young people now be as questionable abt their leaders and the unfair policies of capitalism .
If you're enjoying discovering punk of the era, can I respectfully suggest you check out seminal Australian punk band, The Saints? Their first hit, "(I'm) Stranded" was a few years before the Pistols, and legend has it that Malcolm McLaren heard it and the genesis of Sex Pistols was created. Personally, my favourite Saints song is "Know Your Product," an anti consumerism anthem that breaks so much ground for the sound that would influence acts like Clash and so many others
The song is about the Berlin Wall, a wall built to separate Communist East from Democratic West Berlin. The wall was torn down in 1989. Got that Trump! Walls are not a good thing!
Not for dividing the same country they aren't but for defending your self from another country and illegal immigration they are great and the people who sing this song somewhat agree
What has that got to do with anything? Punk was one of the most progressive music scenes we've ever seen. Rock against racism. Tom Robinson. Females as influential as males on the scene.
There are bands out there still doing this... Mostly local scene, many very young. Yes, The Clash became important, but if you want better that the Pistols, "The Damned" and "The Buzzcocks" Whats happening on that street, people standing up and trying to stop fascists marching through their neighborhood (again).
Listen to: The Clash, Complete Control, London’s Burning, White Riot. Sham 69, Ripoff. X-ray Specs, Oh Bondage Up Yours. He Ramones, Glad to see you go, Sheena is a Punk Rocker, Judy is a Punk.
We had the Labour party running the country back then so everything had gone to hell in a hand bag, and guess what, we now have another Labour party period and everything is going to hell in a handbag.

If ever we needed another revolution like Punk gave us in the late 70s....
Won't happen. This generation is too offended to offend!

I remember being in a pub in Peckham that was playing disco. The DJ suddenly put this on I've never seen so many jaws drop and people stop dancing!
I was 15 from the northeast of England when never mind the bollocks was released, what a time to be 15
I was 13, in East London at the time.. fantastic days to be alive.👍
Punk rock saved my life. Gave me a purpose in the 70s. 80s 90s and today. England forever ❤
It was Iron Maiden for me, I listen to them every day
England Forever? Seems you missed the point. Maybe skinhead music is more your thing.

Cudos to Cosmic Psychos ! The best Punk Band around ! 🍻from Germany to Australia

X - RAY SPEX were my favourites back then and still are now, Poly the og riot grrrrl.
Brilliant…….
Love the Pistols but even more watching you rock out while your cat loafs behind you. Good post.
I met john In Hollywood, in 1980, we shared a beer. He was a quite intelligent shy, little dude.
Its about their visit to Belsen a concentration camp during the ww2 and the Belin wall which divided east and west Berlin.
No,they only went to the Berlin Wall.
They have been touring just recently. With Frank Carter on vocals.
The Damned "Life Goes On" 🔥❤️🔥 Nuff Said.

I'm 55, been going to punk shows since 1985
There is a concert by the Pistols early in the 2000s in London , with the original line up Glen Matlock on bass they do all their hits
It's the sound of disobedience.
You need to try Pretty Vacant if you haven't already
The sex pistols dressed by Vivian Westwood. They might of been a manufactured band but they did light the flame
