Désolé, ce que fait Grube est passionnant en regard de la Sutherland qui est en permanence dans le rôle de diva. Et vocalement Grubé est, elle, compréhensible.
That's not out of the ordinary for a well-trained opera singer where the peak ages are about 40s-60s. More modern opera singers can wear out because of no chest voice training and become knodel/kermit. Some of the older ones went on singing beautifully into their 80s.
Really she is a force of nature. Unbelievable. I have been blessed twice with watching and listening to her live. I would say, vocally, for technique, personality and actual huge size of her voice (she could be heard from outside the theatre as well...), she is the equivalent of an orgasm. In a way, she really is the Caballe of the East. Incredible pianissimo, crescendo, coloratura which is never out of place or in your face (like Sutherland's, I'm afraid), high e like confetti... she's magical.
finally someone correctly pointed out that Gruberova has an oversized dramatic voice, soaring and powerful and extrordinary beautoful, and the traditional recording cannot fully capture the volumn and the beauty of her voice!

Gruberova at this stage of her career was losing the strength at the bottom of the voice as everything became moans and hollow in the middle and lower than a decade before. She had more of a chest voice then. Elvira is a lower coloratura role with a Malibran high mezzo version that still lingers in the soprano score. By the 2000’s Gruberova voice was still there but it was getting drier and weaker. With phrases choppy/moaned in order to save her strength for that icy violin soprano in alt voice completely a controlled scream and never faked. That was her power. Which she delivered here to great applause. She hung on till her death in 2021. Her last Lucia in 2019.

Well to be honest she had one of if not the best vocal technique in the opera history that is why despite ageing she kept voice is good shape
