Timeless excellence she has. A very humble and kind lady who earned the high respect of huge figures like La Stupenda, Richard Bonynge, Karl Böhm. She has an ideal package of soprano traits: an ever-youthful voice, extreme range up to G(#?)6, spot-on coloratura (that Lucio Silla run, Zerbinetta, Konstanze, etc.), and exceptional breath control (her pianissimos are DIVINE). I have had the extreme privilege to see her singing live and meet her in person. That was just the most wonderful moment of my recent years. As she gradually sings less and less publicly, we are losing our connection with that batch of most wonderful divas who sang in 60s/70s/80s. Just the thought of this is sad enough.

I saw la Gruberova as the Queen of the Night in Munich when I was a boy and it was a revelation. I have loved opera ever since. Thank you, Edita. 💕
Enorme , completa, y perfecta soprano de coloratura. Ella y la Sutherland brillan en lo más alto del Olimpo de la Ópera. La primera en los años 60 la Gruberova en los 90. GRANDE HASTA EL ÚLTIMO CONCIERTO!!!!!

Gruberova is a TRUE artist and defiantly a legendary coloratura! random comments aside...nobody can deny she is one of the greats!
Gruberova was a coloratura of the first class: anyone denying that is just ignorant. In the Mozartian and Strauss coloratura work, she is near unbeatable, and there is nothing wrong with that. I see nobody criticize “Wagner” or “Verdi” sopranos, what’s wrong with a “Mozart” soprano? Nothing at all. Brava Edita, in her prime she was sublime.
Edit: her Gilda was also fabulous!
The one criticising have mostly never heard her live. I had the luck from small child to see her about 6-9 times from the front seats. I have heard many great singers, but I have never experienced and I mean with anybody, those emotions as with her. The mastery over her voice was simply out of this world...

Thank you for the clips from the Ponnelle Zauberflöte. It is unclear in Der Hölle Rache, but Gruberova is costumed as the Empress Maria Theresa, for a very good reason which is yet a little much to expound on here. Gruberova worked with Ponnelle in many of his productions, including Manon, Lucio Silla, Rigoletto and Così fan tutte.

I loved this video OperaMyWorld! Miss Gruberova was a wonderful singer. She really had a DELUXE lyric coloratura voice! These examples were fun to listen to! I wasn't so crazy about the Sonnambula - but I enjoyed very much the others. This lady had so much passion and energy! I had forgotten how much i liked her! You are so right about how she brought so much to the world of opera. What a voice she had and what an incredible longevity! Thank you for posting this!

When it comes to Italian opera, I prefer other singers. In Strauss and Mozart, on the other hand, she is truly at home (and thoroughly enjoyable).
Stefano, el Bel Canto es opera italiana, En Sonambula, Beatrice di Tenda, Anna Bolena, Roberto Devereux la Gruberova no tiene rival y en Lucrecia Borgia, Lucía, Linda, il Puritani, La Traviata,Don Pasquale...etc está siempre en lo más alto!! No sé si habrás visto en teatro a la Gruberova en sus buenos años... Hasta los 60 años vocalmente se mantuvo en plenitud ( cosa única cantando un repertorio de coloratura) todas sus funciones en cualquier teatro fueron un triunfo incontestable !!!

Gruberova up until the mid 90's was a phenomenon. Then bad things happened, but let's bask in her prime a while.

Maybe the last serious great coloratura who really worked to gain a superb technique. For me her voice was rather glassy for the Italian bel canto roles. She was still singing exceptionally well in her 50s and without transposition but she did go on rather too long after that.
