Peter's Fly Fishing Vlog: Why No Simple Click & Pawl Fly Reels

  • There are plenty of cheap, cast disk drag reels out there and there are also plenty of elegant, machined, pricey click & pawl reels. What we don't see is very many cast, click & pawl reels.
When is the last time anyone needed a disk drag on a 3 wt? When's the last time someone was spooled when fighting a smallmouth bass. I have landed a smallie that was 24 1/4" long and an estimated 8 lbs. Did I use the disk drag on me reel to fight that fish? No!
So we're stuck with buying them used.
If you know of an inexpensive, cast, click & pawl reel that is available new, drop the name in the comments.

Those Scientific Angler's System Ones were and are great reels for trout fishing I know I got a couple of them. The Hardy LRH and Princesses were the gold standards for fly reels for trout back in the 1970s and '80s. I have been fishing a Lamson Liquid for a while now, it came with two extra spools. But it's discontinued. For some reason things get discontinued at a very fast rate, Gee's fly rods are introduced, and then they are gone in just a few short years. All I want is a reel like those Hardy's that can hold a 4 to 6 wt DT fly line and 50 to 75 yards of 20 lb backing. I have been into the backing a few times in my trout fishing life over the last 60 years.

I could not agree more. I think full-cage, click-and-pawl reels are seeing a resurgence though. Lord knows the price of a Marquis 7 spool has gone up. The SA versions go for more than the Hardys did just a few years back.

Valid rant. Once we collectively realize these new reels are mostly glitter hopefully we can move back to a good quality click pawl that can be palmed for resistance. That's all we ask. They'll easily last a couple of lifetimes.

Large-arbor reels are all the rage these days.
Orvis Battenkill or Hardy Princess are sweet traditional flyreels.

I sure regret selling my collection of Hardy Marquis , as that noisy click is a must have for me now. I pulled out my Sage 506L out of its box this season, and decided Ill keep that in use after admiring it on my last fall trip . Its a Beauty! Nowadays Large Arbour is it, so my silent reels be up for sale, and then looking to add with some noisy fast line pickup reels... Tall and skinny like the Hardy Ultraclick UCL. I will know the moment I put it in my hands if its a life long commitment ;) Of course Ill never give up my Islanders. One can never have enough fly reels I suppose ;) 😉

I have taken to ultra light fly in the last year and wanted to move away from disc drag as I am mostly in salt water and the reel will usually get dunked and disc drags are easy to service. So I have got a good condition Olympic 440 (Pflueger Medalist copy) as the click mechanism is easy to access to wash and oil and I'd rather control the drag pressure by hand than twiddling with knobs during the fight. Win-win for simplicity and cost for me.

I think we are all in the quest for the perfect reel and that perfect line and rod to fish. A slam in the vehicle door and a set down in a sandy waters edge will at least I have found pretty much makes what ever the cost or claim of the manufacturer worthiness. Through the years of fly fishing, without mentioning the brands I have come up with what works best for me. I will admit the cost of premium line to be greater than the cost of both rod and reel. It's whatever works for the person. Personally I enjoy all aspects of fly fishing, from tying my own flies to trying my hand at coaxing the elusive fish to bite. I'm enjoying your channel, thanks for your commitment.

I used my Grandfather's Mitchell 752 and 756 reels for twenty years and considering my grandfather used them from the mid 1970s to the early 1990s and caught among other things a ten pound brown trout is a testament to the quality build of these reels

Agreed Nothing beat the old Martin Classic reels, I have a cortland 440 ltd and a few Orvis (Made in England) Battenkills and a couple System Ones. These are still great reels.

great video! i very much agree....all spey steelheaders (including you and me) seem to just love gear n pawl! Besides the fun of manual drag.. When using barbless hooks i find the softer pawl like drag keeps the perfect tension. When the tension is Too tight the fish has so much leverage, a single open mouth head shake sometimes sends the hook flying (especially if its a longer classical hook fly). good news is steelhead don't often leave the pool like atlantic's do. They also seem to tire almost as fast vs a stronger drag. Something involving anerobic states. Like a person running up a hill full sprint works a different stamina then looong sslow disstance running (its seriously called L.S,D anerobic's). The fish has little resistence and go's all out wild...Still at least some Companies like speyco (low range), hardy and farlex( medium high) saracione ( very high) all have made gear n pawl for us spey trout and steelheaders specifically.... For salmon i use a drum drag godfrey... even thought pawl can be still used I choose disc for the salt. Just to get the fish in faster for its health. A shark will eat a tarpon..

Thanks for the video Peter, would be nice if one of the big name manufacturers take note. I only use click and pawl reels for my fresh water fishing and considering one for my salt water work, just to heighten the experience and even the playing field.

Danica Compo 69 reels are my go to. My father and I have a small army of them. Just simple polymer reels with a bronze bushing and a washer and nut for tension. Best reels for most of the fishing we do, both fresh and saltwater up to Cohos. Using them for chums and chinooks on the beach is pushing it but I have done it at the expense of a bruised palm.

Maxcatch do some trout and salmon clicker reels, under their classic reels section. The salmon one is great. It has a disc drag plus clicker. The trout size ones are proper click and pawl reels

I knew about the Battenkill, but not the Redington. Good to know. I find that the Battenkill is at the upper end of "affordable".
Hopefully people will add a few more as I certainly don't have the product line of every reel manufacturer memorized. What I do see though is that when I go into the typical fly shop (and I've been in quite a few) the selection of affordable click & pawl reels in their display cabinets is often close to zero.

    • @ZGADOW
      @ZGADOW 3 роки тому +3

@@hooked4lifeca I agree. There seems to be some fixation on drag systems , which is probably an artifact of the tackle industry brain washing anglers to think they 'need' the most expensive equipment or they won't be prepared.

Good rant!! Now you got me on a reel hunt, will be looking for something. The three weight reels I have laying around belong to my dad and grandfather. The are believe it or not click and pawl style made from bakelite and steel. Oh and one is an automatic, wind up with a paddle lever for retracking the line. Still haven't figured out how thy hat was used.

ill tell why...after fishing 34 countries and ive been in the fly fishing industry for almost 40 years (38)..most fly rodders have been duped into thinking they need 20lbs of drag when the truth is ive never set my drag over eight pounds (5 lbs for tarpon, 8lbs for bill fish) ive never and never will use anything but a clicker on my trout..its the only thing that will protect 6x at 50 feet. I prefer a clicker on western steelhead ,atlantic salmon too.

In all of my years trout fishing, I've only needed a disk drag once. I was stuck on a slippery rock surrounded by strong currents, a deep hole in front of me and a huge brown running downstream peeling line to the backing, heading for some rocks. I needed three hands, one to hold the rod, one to palm the reel and one for my wading staff so that I could get off the rock without drowning. A disk drag would've freed up a hand so that I could've got off that rock, chased that fish and kept it out of those rocks. Any other time a click & pawl has been more than enough.

  • @kevinmcloughlin5886

The click and pawl fly reel has been around for a very, very long time. When things are suddenly replaced after a long history, the benefits should be immediately obvious. So far it escapes me.

My guess is that most people can find decent quality used click pawl reels for under $50 on "the site". And unlike drag reels, they usually age very well with little loss in performance. So adding a new click reel to this crowded marketplace is just asking for poor sales. It's the same reason why cars are getting more expensive: because used cars are lasting longer.
