Nice review. FYI - the intent of the pawls is to allow for right or left hand retrieve, one is always off so there is less tension when retrieving line as opposed to line outgoing. What I do with C/P reels when I need more tension is to remove the spring and slightly bend it open so when installed there is more tension, go slowly until it's where you like it.

I think these are the retro TIEMCO Japanese designed reels. Good quality. They’re currently on sale for $49.98 and I just picked up a 45 for my #4 fiberglass rod yesterday.. May need to get the 56 too. I’d put this up against my old Hardy made Orvis Battenkill from decades ago… but this is prettier. The quality for that price is unreal!

It kind of looks like the two toned mastery MPX.

hi, may i ask how is the finish of this reel? are the finishing good? are the edges machined smooth? thank you for the review.

The finish is pretty clean. Not as nice as my Orvis Battenkill but it’s still good.

Thanks for the review. Would you choose the 56 or 45 for a WF5 fly line?

Either one, the 56 would hold a little more backing line than the 45 with the 5wt line. However, the 45 might be a little smaller/lighter and may balance better if the 5wt rod is light weight.

Have you tried a Hardy reel?

Hardy makes a nice reel for sure. I can’t justify $400 for a click and pawl though - it’s an old, simple design. I landed my PB trout (7lb rainbow) using this White River reel with no issues. Fish had me into the backing almost immediately after hookset!

@@flyghtclubarsenal 4-8 hundred dollars for a reel like that is crazy money, but for me it's worth it to have itleast one in my life time. With Hardy, your not just paying for the reel. Your paying for the history, the pride and the quality. And that's worth every penny in my opinion. But in the end...the fish dont give a damn what equipment you have. But fishing with a Hardy just feels more natural to me. It allows you to really connect with that fish after the initial hook up. It's like the difference between using a willow branch from a tree vs fishing with a Winston rod. You get what you pay for.

Hardy’s are not made in England anymore. I’m sure they are still good quality but your paying $300 extra for a sticker. A $100 reel is expensive, you should expect very good quality as this price point. You will notice very little difference in functionality with a reel costing $300-$700. People want to feel like an expert, so they buy pricey logos to try and uphold that image.

I agree. I personally use the Orvis Battenkill click and pawl reels. They have a little more bang for their buck. Although this is a nice reel as well. As for the Hardy…… I am getting one soon. Just 1, because I want to be apart of that history. I’m a fan of click and pawl, and I use it on these big western rivers in Colorado, New Mexico, and Wyoming all the time.
