Back in my day, we had to literally make our own Sonic board games. I ended up making a lap-based game based off of Sonic R where up to 4 players simultaneously compete to reach 1st place. It never got past the board design, but I think if I worked on it more it would’ve features power-up monitors and alternative pathways for each player character’s unique abilities.
2:32 As far as board games with unlockables, there’s a subgenre called “legacy games,” where aspects of the game change across play sessions through things like adding stickers to the board, destroying cards, etc. Those games often have sealed compartments like this one that you open when certain conditions are met.
Nick seriously you have an uncanny ability to make any topic interesting, you got me into TMNT, Klonoa, and now you’re making me interested in tabletop gaming great video as always
For those curious: many tabletop games do have a solo player mode and unlockables, just not the overly casual ones (Monopoly, Uno, Ticket to Ride) If anyone wants to try something beginner friendly I'd recommend Pandemic (which has a legacy version where previous games carry over) or Charterstone, where you play a group of settlers in a new land building a kingdom. The playing map starts empty but you start filling it up with buildings (in the shape of stickers) as you progress in the campaign. By the end of the game you can even scratch out/void rules if you desire. Its a pretty interesting experience.
This game is *excellent*. Edit: You have to reroll every time you spend a die, unless it's a blue die, so in your example, you can't spend that 6 and the 5 without rolling again.
Funny coincidences that I start hearing about this game and go to search for a video on it only to find this one within an hour of its upload. Great look at the game and while it gives me similar vibes to another dice game based on a video game (the Cuphead dice game specifically) I can see the appeal and am curious about picking it up!
Considering this company made a similar Mega Man game, I wouldn't be surprised if the dice colors are blue, red, and yellow just because that's what they were in that game. this looks fun and cool. Definitely gonna get a copy of it.
Cool video, but this just gave me a random thought. Remember those Luigi casino minigames from Super Mario 64 DS and New Super Mario Bros? What if there was official casino minigames in a Sonic game where Sonic could play poker or speed or something? I'd literally pay extra for that.
While its not sonic board game related, I do remember making a few games with Legos when I was younger. One of which was a board game where i believe you had to navigate the board to collect as many green balls as you could (don't ask) and the player with the most wins. Essentially Mario party, but at the time i wasn't privy on Mario party's existence yet. One if my fonder memories.
Funny enough, this game makes a decent starter pack for my Sonic TTRPG. My game uses handfuls of d6s and d10s, and having multiple colors helps separate out dice pools for different players. This would work for 3 players +1 GM!
Solo tabletop games are actually more common than you might realize. I got exposed to them with my favorite tabletop game, Power Rangers Heroes of the Grid.
Hm, interesting, i wonder how well it has done? Also, perhaps you should try out the Tag Force Game Series, it was how i finally learned to play Yu-Gi-Oh! at least.
I am now convinced that the naming process behind Sonic projects for years now has just been make a list of words the fit the idea, choose a word, and slap it behind Sonic. Think I'm joking? Sonic Shuffle Sonic Heroes Sonic Rush Sonic Riders Sonic Unleashed Sonic Colors Sonic Generations Sonic Frontiers Sonic Roll Sonic Boom Sonic Prime Sonic X Note: this isn't an attack on the franchise(I myself am a fan of it) it's just a funny detail that's kinda obvious lol
So is this another “not as hard to learn as it looks” game, where the rulebook is overdone and more complicated than necessary? This is typical in board gaming.
Why do I have a feeling alot of people will buy this for the sole purpose of collecting it instead of playing it, or it could just be that I have no friends and still want it.

Have you played Sonic Battle Racers?
"back in my day" 🧓
There actually was an original Sonic board game by Milton Bradley, which I did have as a kid. Though it was based off the original Sonic game.
I absolutely love the Sonic Roll art by Tracy Yardley and I'd definitely find this to play

I still have a copy of Risk Legacy that has unopened pouches 😅
Chaos Confetti comes to mind.

There's one solo board game I just bought called Hornet Leader where you command a squadron of navy fighter jets and it's a fantastic solo board game.
Can't wait for the speedruns🎉

Someone should take this to Vegas and do a Casino Night Zone theme.
Game Apologist table top TLDRs are a great vibe! Thanks for sharing!

To be fair Nick, neither do the characters (nor the writers) know how to play the game either.
I play yugioh, and I don't know how to play yugioh.

I LOVE YOUR VIDS
Sonic: GO DICE ROLL
Edit: 0:54 HA!
I hope that there is a advance/rush era version of this for more player characters. I just want a cream character card.
I used to roll the dice.
Labyrinths & Launch Bases.
Heh. I understood that reference
I like your funny words, green man

Thank you Nick for convincing me to buy this lmao
good job, GA, you got me to buy this game.
But can the Carbuncle eat itself?
Bravo
Nice reference 😂
No, because the Carbuncle is not in Sonic Roll.
Cant wait to see people making homebrew character cards for their OCs
I own a copy of Risk that has unlockables. My brothers used to blast through that game.
Funny enough, this game makes a decent starter pack for my Sonic TTRPG. My game uses handfuls of d6s and d10s, and having multiple colors helps separate out dice pools for different players. This would work for 3 players +1 GM!
did you go to the speed cafe to show off playing it? that's actually so goated LOL
Time to roll the dice

now im just thinking of how a sonic tabletop RPG would work
if you want another Sonic table top game
may I suggest Monopoly Gamer, Sonic the Hedgehog edition
Hm, interesting, i wonder how well it has done?
Also, perhaps you should try out the Tag Force Game Series, it was how i finally learned to play Yu-Gi-Oh! at least.
Of course Sonic Rolls. He can become a sphere by curling up
These rules are so complicated, if only they made a video game out of this
I'll presume the cover at 2:40 hides The Doomsday.

Think I'll stick to Sonic pinball.

My brain hurts trying to understand how this game is played. 😂
On your turn, roll dice.
Then try placing dice in the stage if it matches. Get to the end of a stage. Fight the boss. Get them emeralds. Win!
