I really enjoy your videos dude. Determining the difference between body niggles from training and an actual injury is something I seem to always be juggling. For me, the most effective management has been paying just as much attention to weight training, mobility, and accessory work as I do to actually running. I’d rather run but without the supporting work I just do not stay healthy. Take care!
Well done Luke, another grt. video. I'm a big fan of Hokas and hopefully they ARE your solution. Optimism is good - but a healthy body is better. Sad news about Sarah - nothing worse than being blindsided when everything is going well. We're all rooting for her recovery! All the best at Buffalo and have fun.
Thanks Bruce! Hopefully it's nothing but a distant memory in no time! Sarah will be fine - she'll bounce back to greatness in no time I'm sure. Thanks!
Great! If niggles persist, I try and give it three fulls days rest (no poking or prodding or anything), and if it's still no good then start treating it like an injury. It's a tricky one for sure though. Good luck!
Carbon plated aggravates my left ankle and Achilles on my right, so I’ve avoided any shoe with them. Torrents 2’s tho did get rid of my PF tho. For me I’ve gotta have a fairly flexible shoe. Still breaking in my Norda’s, so far so good. Hope switching it up helps and it doesn’t get any worse. Cheers!
Hi Luke, I have that same 3rd/4th metatarsal issue, diagnosed as Morton’s Neuroma - you mention you’ve self-managed this in the past, can you share some tips on what you’ve done? I’ve had a steroid injection before but that can’t be a habit!
Hey mate! Not 100% sure my is Morton’s neuroma, but stiff shoes (less ground feel - particularly on the trails) and working on foot strength and toe splay seem to keep it in check for me. Hope that helps. Good luck!
@@lukewbarrett interesting! During marathons I aim for 90g/hour and I always consumed less during ultras. Wondering if I would notice a big difference if I would go over 100g/hour
Hey man, another great vid! I recently switched to the Hoka but started having issues on my longer runs, it seems the toe is too tight for me. I'm looking at the Altra shoes, whats your thoughts on them? Good luck on the upcoming event!!
Hey, I've just left Altra - used them for years, but like Luke and his Hoka issues - the Altra's just fell apart with heavy sustained use -- both trail and road shoes. Loved the width and roomy-ness on them - felt great zero drop also - but they just didn't hold up well at all - real shame as they were first class comfort. Resorted to casual wear only for now, which is a shame.
@stevenmcfarlane6010 cheers Steve! Yeah, I did some further research on the Altras, and since the company was purchased, the quality has gone down! Can you recommend a good alternative that has the room? Cheers mate
I'm getting phenomenal durability from my Nordas, but they're a very similar width to Hokas. Topo are know for their wide toe-boxes like Altra, but can't comment on how well they last. Otherwise I know both Hoka and New Balance (I'm sure there's others too) offer some models in a wide version. Good luck!
@@jaycavanagh worth checking out topo mtn racers…heard good things but rarely available in my size in UK unfortunately. But I personally like inov8. They have a ‘fitting scale’ 5 being widest. They do zero drop models also, if that’s your thing. Not the best looking footwear but generally have shoes to cover all bases be it hill runs in Scotland or hard packed trails elsewhere. Also, wide enough to to splay the toes
I had three overuse injuries that developed over time. Every time it was while I was wearing Hoka shoes... well, it took me a long time to realize this... the brand is way overrated; poor products but awesome marketing department.
Wild how different everyone’s feet are. Hoka is my solution and your problem! Not sure you can fault them for being successful though… hope you found some shoes that work for your feet eventually!
Yeah, it's weird. Gone back to Salomon which have always served me well plus Dynafit; a European brand and not easy to get in Oceania. Btw cool and motivating stuff you're producing. I was massively impressed with your UTMB Mont Blanc time as the hills over there are real mountains...😅

For sure pre-hab is a valuable part of staying injury free. I've learned to actually enjoy lifting weights over the years too!

Relatively new runner here (almost a year in) and I'm really struggling with how to manage a persistent niggle in my left ankle so this was useful!

Nice fade! Yea love me some Hoka! Looking forward to spring here. Cheers!
Gotta look fast to feel fast! 💇
@@lukewbarrett agree! I always get a pre-race fade. lol

Thanks mate! I think a good shoe rotation helps keep things fresh. My 001’s started feeling great after about 150-200kms. 🤙

128g of carbs per hour, that sounds like alot! Is that what you consume during races?
Sure is! GPT100 was 120g/hour, UTMB was about 110g.

Im of the opinion that more is always better (if your guts can handle it), but I guess everyone is different!
From your description it sounds a little like Morton's neuroma.
Yeah some kind of nerve damage is the likely culprit. Fits with the abuse my feet are subjected to as well!
Awesome again!!! Mine is an injury NOT a niggle. Don’t realise how much you need ya toes until they hurt like F$&K and ya can’t run!!!!
Gah! Sorry to hear. Hopefully you're on the mend and back ASAP.
Also, what camera do you use? Is it the Insta 360? How do you find what you're using? Cheers
Yeah I have the X3 for when I'm out running. Solid little action cam that gives you plenty of options!
@@lukewbarrett That's a great bit of kit 🤙
