    Surprisingly the lack of swimming is what tipped me over the edge last time. It’s hard to express in a single comment, but I’m actually excited to give this a solid attempt. I think (and this is key) playing with friends could make this a staple mmo with the hopes that new systems and original content are added regularly now that the fixing/rebranding is complete. Console could be the boost this needed, and I’m glad to see them take the risk despite the mob that is the internet. Fix bugs, create a strong content release cadence, and be creative.

    I have to disagree with you. If you played this game at launch and didn’t like it. There’s a very good chance you will like it now. The difference is HUGE. As a WoW and ESO vet I can whole heartedly say if you like those games you will love this.

      I mostly meant if you didn't like the bones of the game in combat, crafting, gathering, ui, world, etc you probably won't see much difference. The story has been improved over the years but it remains the same game it was at launch, just more refined. Eso to this game is probably a better bridge than wow to this game just do to combat and how they approach storytelling.

      I have do disagree with your disagreement. If you played this game at launch, you may have become poisoned by the bugs, the lack of attention paid to the feedback of players and testers and the pathetic experience with no end game that you were sold. If you played this game at launch, you may NEVER play this game EVER AGAIN no matter what the hell they do to make it the best game ever made.

    All my friends but one are coming back. We met on new world and we've played a few other games over the past few years. I kinda feel like you haven't really experienced the benefits of the combat system unless you've either done some organized pvp or some high level dungeons. The combat makes it super unique compared to any other MMO. Dodges matter, you have to Iframe through certain attacks, and there's important debuffs... there's some good tanking mechanics. Some of the boss fights are more like Destiny than a typical MMO.
    ESO is also more action combat oriented, but everything in ESO is just Spammy... New world has abilities on cooldowns where ESO has abilities that you can keep recasting over and over if you have the resourses... ESO is also all about clipping combat animations to weave extra attacks in between. New world is slower and more strategic... it feels SOOO much better IMO.

    We've seen this with other MMO's from huge well-funded studios. I'm rooting for AGS to pull an FFXIV-style revival, but I'm not assuming they will do it. It is on the studio and I hope you're suggested direction of just making it a solo rpg is not taken to heart. I want to see more MMOs not less.
    In some respect, you're correct that New World needs a niche that makes it stand out and thus "have a point." However, I think it is unreasonable to say every creation needs a point to be viable in entertainment. I'd argue New World gains more from a conversation around formulas that are proven to work in the MMO sphere, adapting it to their world, and coming up with a way to improve, make novel, or add to that formula. After all, I doubt there was much of a point for Galaga but it took the Space Invaders formula and added to it to come into its own.
    At any rate, It seems like they are in a much better place with the game now than they were when they pushed the game out to PC. They still have a long way to go and it remains to be seen if AGS has the patience or vision to get there. That journey is one I will be happy to watch unfold and for my part I'll jump in to give it another chance.

Because while I know it's absolutely not a "forever" MMO or even a long-term home for me, it's still just a fun game to run around in and explore/craft etc. There are just so many MMOs or MMO-adjacent games out there at this point that not every game needs to be a "1000 hours or nothing" experience.

    After 3 years of swimming, swimming is finally here. But. There are pretty much no places in NW where you would actually need to swim. Most rivers and lakes in NW are too shallow to swim in. Therefore we will still be walking slowly pretty much everywhere, like we do pre-Aeternum update. Good job on AGS for doing bare minimum and just now after 3 years, finally implementing a feature that in every other game is a very self-evident mechanic to have at Day One.
    After thousands of hrs, I'm definitely burned out by AGS incompetence. But I've addicted to this trash that has had potential since Day one launch. Hopefully this time around ... Idk, I don't know how NW is gonna continue to exist with the current dev team. They're incompetent. They don't know what they're doing. They didn't know what they were doing in the early alpha days, they have had no clue the last three years. So how am I supposed to believe that they have any solid plan on what they want to do with NW now when the re-launch hits?

    I'm actually quite optimistic about this re-launch. The original success of the launch proved the game has potential to be a success. Almost a million concurrent players is MASSIVE. The falloff was also massive. About a year later they had a big free content update and with that update the concurrent players peaked at around 125k I believe... and it stayed up around half that for quite a while.
    My theory is that after the Brimstone update is where they basically decided on the current plan and were approved the budget to produce New World Aeternum. Every major update since then came with an overhaul of a section of the main story, while doing a little bit at endgame to flesh it out and keep the players happy. They made some major improvements to influence and territory control systems. They added mounts, which were a big feature people asked for in the original release... I think it's all been leading up to this, and IMO if this goes well they will finally be able to focus on doing more for the endgame without having the secondary goal of building towards this relaunch.
    For a long time, everyone was thinking the game would shut down because the player base was so low, and the devs always said no - we're going to keep supporting this game. Now we know why, and now is the time that will determine if the game actually succeeds or fails. IMO they want to shoot for at least a 2 to 3 hundred thousand concurrent players during peak times (just as a general metric although what they really care about is going to be season passes sold and monthly logins)

      the core problems of new world were the lack of a class system, poor hitbox detection and a gameplay loop that had you looking for multiple armor sets that you had to swap between for different resistances. if they want to have success these have to be addressed or people will move on.

    • @SomeGuyFromUtah
      @SomeGuyFromUtah День тому

      @@rynejones8513 They got rid of all ward gear with the Rise update. There is still certain elemental resistances that you want to have for certain Mutations, but there are multiple ways to get those resistances... whether it's swapping gems on your armor or getting resistance on other pieces, like your necklace etc.
      I never really noticed the hitbox detection problems, but they made some big changes to combat movement and targetting etc with the rise update.
      The new update also lets you pick a starting class in terms of a pair of weapons that work well together and a bonus to certain tradeskills depending on which starter class you choose. Beyond the starting class - I think most people prefer the flexibility in new world to change your weapons and weight loadout to create your own build.
      The meta has basically made classes both for pvp and pve.
      In pve Most common tank build is sword and hammer, healers most often use lifestaff and void gauntlet, dps has more flexibility but often you get one decent damage weapon and one weapon that's good for grouping mobs or debuffs etc.
      In Pvp, you have bruisers with hammer/greataxe, healers, utility/debuff pros with VG and either BB, IG or Flail... swords or ranged weapons often go in a disruptor group that tries to single out healers etc.

      regarding the gear point, what is end game gearing like then? this is a problem that ESO has where you have dozens of armor sets but nothing is truly an upgrade as you would get from going from expansion to expansion in EQ or WoW. this becomes incredibly boring to me.

    • @SomeGuyFromUtah
      @SomeGuyFromUtah День тому

      @@rynejones8513 Unlike most MMO's skill reflection rather than gear is the primary thing that wins the day... so if that doesn't appeal to you then I would agree that the game isn't for you. Some of the hardest content in the game has been done by extremely undergeared players who literally just don't get hit because they know how to avoid the damage.
      That being said, there are some really impactful perks and to compete at the highest levels in pvp you need both good perks along with a lot of skill to win the fights. They also added "artifacts" to the game with the Rise update, which is like exotic items in Destiny, where these items have very unique and specific perks that totally change the way you play the game to take advantage of these perks. One Greataxe does void damage instead of slashing and can scale off of INT instead of strength... another turned the javelin toss from a spear into a pull ability rather than one that knocks you back.
      I definitely don't have a problem with lack of classes. I tend to think of New World a little more like Destiny rather than WoW. You can change your weapons and each one has pros and cons...
      I do agree that they haven't found a really good path to upgrading gear yet, but that's not an actual gameplay problem, it's a system within the game... and probably my biggest gripe with the game at endgame. I never quit because the combat wasn't fun... I only quit because the path to getting what I wanted was poorly designed.
      It obviously sounds like you don't like the way the combat works though, so I guess it's just not the game for you. Personally, I've been playing and enjoying wow, but as we get closer to October 15th I'm struggling finding the motivation to login and just push the same buttons in the perfect order.... after doing that for 20 years.
