- Live performance, Race with the Devil on Spanish Highway, guitar heroes and legends Di Meola in Augora Hills Canyon Club with special guest Steve Vai! Epic night! 4/26/15
Both of these guys are my heroes , there from different worlds ,but they are both deserve respect.
Not so different in the end. Al was in Chick Corea's RTF which was fusion/progressive rock and Vai in Zappa's band which was progressive rock/experimental
In Al's words "Steve Vai took guitar to a whole other level and universe.' can't imagine how awesome it is to see someone who grew up playing your stuff and idolizing you become so iconic.
It takes a lot of balls for someone to get up and play this song with the great Al Di Meola. Big ups to Steve Vai and their friendship seems very real and cool. Not an easy tune to just get up and jamb with all those super fast and long and complicated riffs and many transitions. Great collaboration.
Steve played with Zappa when he was like 19….mega brass balls were mandatory for that gig
This is not a competition. They are only two great musicians making music and sharing a space together for the delight of the audience.
Al wants to kick the shit out of his fellow musicians on stage and he expects the same in return.
The percussion session is an incredible differential, it gives an excellent atmosphere to the music, wonderful rhythmic musicians that deserve my respect!!
It's very interesting to see all the Al fans crapping on Steve when Steve played Al's concert and all the Vai fans doing the same to Al when Al played at Steve's concert. As a guitarist who picked up the guitar because of these two players, it's beyond cool to see them doing stuff together, even though they're both clearly outside their normal realms of comfort when playing the other's music. Watch both videos and you'll see what I mean.
youtube guitar heroes. everything is a pissing contest and the keyboard warriors know the best and talk the talk. sadly most can't listen, but hey, it takes all kinds to make the world go around. when I watch any of these masters play together the last thing that comes to my mind is "which one is better"; weird. I always think how they harmonize, how they complement each other, push each other, where the chemistry is - and how it fails when it does. it's like multiple painters painting the same paint at the same time; how they crisscross, divert, divulge, come-together, paint over, create and elevate...
this particular performance is amazing, just pure music delight. thank you @PerezTeam for posting this.
+İhsan Cem “Jim” Onur I totally agree with you! I'm glad people don't slam me for my playing on my channel! I don't know why people can't simply appreciate music and someone's playing for what it is. I like so many different players and styles.
@İhsan Cem Onur "which one is better"" - I fully agree, the question is weird. Both are virtuosos of very different style, with years of practice. It makes each of them has different not only styles but favorite modes, rythms, licks, kind of argpeggios, scales, chords and harmony. It's gret they can play together in complementary way adding their personal flavor and....no false note :)
Notice how Al does not use effects like flangers, wah wah pedals, echo delay, etc. He picks every note. Apparently, Steve Vai did not understand this concept.
Andy, I'm not sure that either of these guitarists know much about scales or arpeggios and theory. They're clearly flailing and trying to copy stuff they've heard from Yngwee Malsteem or Ritchie Blackmore records. I'm not sure what neighbourhood bar this is they're jamming at, but they should be grateful the jam host let them up on stage.
Just saw Al in Milwaukee at the Pabst Theater. He is just still so fantastic. Also going to see Satch and Vai this coming Tuesday in Milwaukee. What an incredible 2 weeks on guitarists and meeting up with some great friends. Thx for the post
Al is a master, his tone and phrasing is in a class of it's own...
I just find it awesome that two greats find each other great, and they jam so well. great stuff.
My fingers are tired from me listening to this one!
I’ve liked both of these guys for decades and hearing them play on the same stage is a treat! Thanks for sharing!
They sound so good together. Saw Al last month at The Newton Theatre. Brought the house down. Such great players in their own styles. There are many guitar players out there of this caliber who is to say who is the best. I could'nt pick just 1. Steve Lukather is one of my favorites too. That guy smokes.
They sound amazing together. People want to argue talent but you cannot quantify feeling. And yes, Steve Lukather was a genius.
I'm 70 yo, live in London and have been an Al DiMeola fan since 1972. I saw him play here maybe 7 years ago and he had switched from Gibson guitars to Paul Reed Smith: to my ears it hugely diminished his sound that he was a shadow of the awesome self: thank you, PEZ, for bringing back some memories from my past, much appreciated!!!
Wow this is killer, dunno what the fuzz is all about, I think Vai is taking this piece to very unusual places and its a delight. In a way its like when Al and Paco played, after this both of them surely grew as musicians.
Really admirable artists !!
What a Bad-Ass Duo these guys make! I hope they do more shows together soon.
Soooooo nice to see DiMeola playing a Les Paul again! Thanks for the share.
Thanks for sharing. It's great to see and hear these two legends team up. Di Meola was one of the people who inspired me to play guitar, and Vai expanded that experience.
I think Steve won an Oscar for acting as if this is the first time he plays this gig. This is a dreamgasm for me, I’m into both players, even though Steve Vai style is more eclectic both of them deliver their soul and heart playing with skill, technique, timing and feeling. Thanx for upload.
It's great to see two super guitar players working together I hope they do more.
Two masters, amazing piece, thanks for posting.
Sorry about the shaky footage, it was with a note 4 cell phone.
No apologies, you're a legend!
thanks for this. it made my night.
You did great,thanks for sharing!
It's great! Thanks for posting.
Thanks Perez for this vid!
2 grands maîtres de la guitare
excellent, merci pour le post !!!
Brilliant Preformance..the harmony lines were excellent!
I saw AL DI MEOLA IN 1982 in MEXICO, CITY AT THE SPORTS PALACE. RAMSEY LEWIS OPENED FOR HIM.
I've seen both live. I saw Al in Mexico, city in 1982. I've seen Steve here in USA about. 6 times by him self and 2 G3'S ALL THOSE AR3 REAL MUSICIANS!!!!
This is rad!!! the picking patterns that Al does is so unique, I mean the timing of his riffs is almost like a percussionist - it's not just fast like a metal player, his leads have rhythm to it, it's hard to explain..
skategangster Al Dimeola says that he is a better percussionist than guitar player so there is a reason for what you stated.
henry crun
Believe what you want
Al di Meola stzrted as a drummer btw.....so it has been said.....dnt blame the messenger
Resume: his TIMING is immaculate
No explanation needed i got it.
Great song
God! I loved that!!!!
Outstanding in every way, including the video and audio quality! Thanks 👍
Glad you enjoyed it!
These guys are both just amazing.
En Aldi meola hay influencia de Santana es que Santana a hecho una carrera exitosa y a influenciado a muchos
Al Di Meola es Dios...❤
Best song ever over and out stay safe rock on forever 🎸🎸🎸😎
LOVE ALDIMEOLA. THE GREATEST OF THE GREATEST ❤❤❤
Wow I cant believe I missed ADM in Toronto on June 24 2015 at Nathan Philips Square I was grateful to see him at The Diamond Club on Sherbourne Ave in Toronto in 1987 A small Venue Lots of local Musicians attended either to admire or Pay Homage to an Amazing Versatile Experimental Guitar Legend Ive Seen Steve Vai during His Frank Zappa Days before David Lee Roth or whoever it was that took him into their Band I was an avid concert Photographer with a high level of access to many now deceased Guitar Gods BB King Stevie Ray Vaughan 4 Times Albert Collins Frank Zappa Jeff Healey Johnny Winter Randy Rhodes etc As well as had the honour of seeing Eric Clapton David Gilmour Pink Floyd and Solo Robin Trower Michael Shencker Eddie Van Halen Alex Lifeson Albert Lee Santana Mick Taylor The Stones and so many more Still Sharp in my memories even though Years have passed At least someone taped it and put on here so we can all enjoy what I missed and maybe others as well
Love'em both but Al D' is the boss!
I don't know why Al decided to switch to PRS way back when but I am glad he's back on the Les Paul. Listen to that tone!
Es una maravilla verlos juntos!
This is beyond Killer!!!
Al is a fucking machine! What a beast!
Good stuff right there! I was going to go if only I knew Steve would be there too, Damn it!
My god!... too awesome!!!!!
makes you realize how much better Al is and he wrote the music too
WOW.. what a great Duet.. 2 Shred Masters having fun..!!!!
Hey Mark that's sounds awesome! Those are some of my favorite guitarists. Uli Roth was amazing when I saw him in Vetura CA, I think it was about 8 years ago. He's out touring now.
Di Meola is such a great guy for jamming with Steve, what I THRILL to watch these guys do a gig.
Steve was carefully holding back to let Al shine 😄
Its not often you see Vai get out-shredded on the improv... Al is one bad man...
Yeah... Cheers to that! :)
Alot better when it's original,,, from the mind to the fingertips in split seconds.. beauty
Two magicians making alchemy with instruments.
nice as usual.......
Wish I could've been there!
cela fait super plaisir d'écouter ce c'est grand musicoSSS!!
i was at this show.....had totally forgot about it until this clip popped up
How cool is that! What a great show it was!
What I love about Al is he doesn't need a whammy bar or finger tapping or histrionics to make his point.
What I love is that billion people love that finger tapping dan whammy bar playing, and SV has made crazy resume with those style of playing
He could probably play left hand only and shear the crap out of it!
Tap or no tap, it is all valid self expression!
Exactly, just needs to come up with ideas that enjoyable to actually listen to instead of latin mush
What i love is that al di meola can only alternate pick
Former Death / Obituary / Testament guitarist James Murphy did a killer version of this instrumental on one of his solo albums. That opening single-note riff is just balls-out heavy!
6672rock james is a amazing player, i first heard him on testament's LOW record.
Too cool!
Awesome....
Audio is torture, sure was great to be there.
Awesome
so diferent so good.
genial!!!
Vai is simply a wizard. Otherworldly.
I bought elegant gypsy from a record store in 2o02. Discovering fusio. Jazz. The likes of Jaco, miles, exc.... I was completely blown out!!! Zappa meets Di'.miola.... my ass fell out...
Next comes “Race With the Devil on a Spanish Highway After Drinking Three Cups of Black Coffee”.
well, that was fun.
Bravo Maestro x 2
Both great guitarest in the own rights!!
Master Di Meola! Nice!
Al di Meola is the best guitar player in the world now a days and has been for quite a while.
Nobody plays better than him
It is very nice to hear the contrast between a very Melodic Player like Al and Steve that goes for far more expressiveness. Like to me this is actually almost like Al having another Synth player on hand in the form of Steve.
In any case if anything, you can hear 2 widely creative players with unique phrasing that are yet so fundamentally different from each other....Yet also working out together within the context of this song.
Al DI is always great 👍🏻 steve is also good ✌🏻
I agree. And haha! It was a great show.
Both from the NY Island too!
Vai looks apprehensive around Al which is understandable with his technique!
Anybody would, and it's not just his technique. DiMeola's knowledge of modes and scales, and his ability to play them all at speed, and splice them together in delicious ways, is terrifying to any musician except a tiny handful. There's really only one I know of that can keep up with him, Chick Corea. There are no others alive today. Steve Vai is fabulous and partway into that camp, and can at least play with him, but is still constantly overmatched. DiMeola is a phenomenon and I adore him.
To find others, we have to go to the past and musicians who are now deceased. I would expect Oscar Peterson to be at his level, and the classical greats, once they learned the modern styles of playing. I'd imagine Beethoven and Mozart would get a huge kick out of what DiMeola is doing with music and would become extremely excited with new ideas.
Genious still on thé place
This song always rocks! This song seems to remind me of something else every time I hear it though. The beginning of the song somehow reminds me of the TV show "The People's Court" theme song. I don't know why.
I saw Al in Cincinnati in '15 ('14 maybe?). All those years of digging him and his Les Paul and buying all his albums and I finally get to see him live...... and he plays a rainbow looking PRS throughout the whole show :/ Never once brought out a Paul.....
Thx Perez ♥
Steve Vai is an incredible guitarist and shredder but Al just burned up the floor! WOW!
This tune is not for comparation, this is gutarist education. And for enjoing for the people who understanding time and palace
AL is the GoD of All Time Best of the Best The Perfect pitch and Tasty Notes Picked
Vai played so good here. Just different styles
UGHHHH Dimeola KICK ASS SMOKE SHOW!
All the damn phones! Does anybody just enjoy the moment anymore? Sh!t stay home and rent a DVD.
Al's playing actually seared off the threads in vai's pantaloonies so as soon as this was over he had to grab his trousers while holding them up and run backstage.Never to be seen again.
oh my gods
After seeing many guitar greats on stage together on youtube and being an extremely frustrated guitar player myself. I now stop all these comparisons and just enjoy the music.
Cool 😎
3:40 Al plays the coolest lick. Followed by total shred. But that little shit at 3:40 is so cool.
This is awesome stuff. Al should release this on cd and/or dvd. If he has then where can I buy it.
100% bad ass!
Music always wins in the end. Of course they sound different and play differently from each other. Each has their own vision of what goes where. If you have to turn it into a competition you've let your head rule over your ear. Enjoy!
凄い組み合わせ
nice ! Extremely interesting !
I love the cross pollination of styles here.
James Murphy does a great version of this song. 🤘🤘🤘
Too bad it wasn't the 3 Italian maestro zappa, vai & di meola. If you can't show mutual respect for 2 amazing guitars and you shouldn't be going to their S. You need to show mutual respect For both fan bases, these are 2 of the greatest guitars of all time. And you never know when you're gonna be able to see these guys again. So cherish every moment you have when you see. These guys live whether they're together or not. We don't have Frank anymore and I couldn't see him live, i certainly wasn't old enough. But I cherish every single thing I hear from him And these two guys as well.
Al kills me
This is so epic as Al being a g hero, but also Steve Via collaborating with him. And yes, Steve holds is own with his super modern fills at that time but, he's progressed ahell
* a hell a lot since then.
Dang !
phone started to melt at 4:40!!
I love Vai be seriously, but he's in over his head here.......
+John Doe Yeah NO shit!!! Vai is truly AWESOME but Al is Not HUMAN...He is totally unconscious he is so fucking good.. I have been listening to Al since the early 70's and he is one of the few guitarist that makes shredding actually musically interesting to listen to for extended periods of time.
