This is basically mashup of two folk songs, Dane pe Dana (first part)and Laal Qalander(second and third part).
Both are extensively covered in Qawalis. If you watched Rahat Fateh Ali Khans Noble Peace prize ceremony performance (If you didnt I would highly recommend it for your next reaction), the part at the end where Desis(south asians) went wild was Laal Qalander rendition.
By the way when he mentions Suleman, he is refering to the Prophet King Solomon.
When I was studying English literature it had biblical references and historical references which we had to understand first before understanding the poetry or drama. For you it will be difficult to understand the folk songs without knowing the religious and cultural references first. 😉
Exactly! We had to figure out not just Biblical and historical references in literature but many a times Greek and Roman mythological references as well. That's one of the interesting aspects of art. It introduces people to entirely different and unexplored cultures and eras of human activity and enriches us with a new appreciation for the art and artistic achievements of human beings all over the world. These are both very culturally rich folk songs that require a bit of understanding of their context before delving into them.
They have combined two folk songs together that's why it is sounding confusing.

First Part: a famous old cultural folk song, talks about his tribe, their cities, regions and his love for his Province.
Second Part: It was a sufi/qawali song, praises of Ali (Prophet Muhammad’s Cousin) and mentions of Hussain (Prophet Muhammad’s Grandson), so yes it had a bit of religious vibes

You were spot on , these are folk doings from 2 of the provinces (states) in Pakistan , he is from Baluchistan and the first part of the song is where he is praising the various cities towns , rivers , mountain ranges of Baluchistan , and the second part is the sufistic mystic love / religious love of life and god from a mystic saint (lal qalandar /literally red saint) of the Sindh province
it's like a breakup of a few folk songs, this female singer hasn't done much justice to these folk songs. the guy with her is the original singer of the song but the original is original. can't compete with that, the new version has to be so good to break the vibe of the first one which didn't happen here.

Just before watching this video I watched The Office series Finale, what a coincident, btw Jody look good with new haircut, it suiits her alot, you both look good. This is long cz they in earlier seasons of Coke Studio were xperienting with multiplle songs in one song and it was more like long live jaming sessions which is big in Pakistan unlike west where short comercial music is more popular.
