I have a Steyr Pro Hunter in .308 Win that I get consistent 3/4 MOA with a few different hand loads. I got it second hand at a sporting goods store in Sheridan, Wyo for a good price. Although load development showed that it wouldn't group too much under .7 to .75 inches, it didn't group too much over that either. With the 26" barrel I get very good velocities with the 178gr ELD-X but what most impressed me was that the cold bore shot was consistent with follow on shots. I can zero it and know that my cold bore shot will be right there, a very fine quality for a hunting rifle. I don't let the barrel get more than warm so temperature drift hasn't been an issue, but it may do the same that the SSG did with the back to back 10 shot string. Since I don't use it in that capacity, I don't worry about it.

I bought a $600 Ruger American Predator, Vortex Crossfire combo in 6.5 creedmoor just to go play with my buddy, who has a custom built rifle with a Nightforce scope. About $5000 for his rig. After doing a simple ladder to find the right load, it was shooting .75 moa. Good enough for $600.

In my opinion, short answer…yes. Why? Because you know they will. Do I have a sniper rifle? No. Do I have rifles capable of taking targets at over 6-700 yards? Yes. Can I hit my target with certainty at those ranges? Yes, and I could probably stretch that a bit more. How can I say this? Because I go to the range regularly, and have watched and practiced most, if not, all of the sniping videos you put out years ago. I have detailed notes and diagrams from those videos that I review every time I go to the range with the thought of either checking zero for deer season, or just practicing long range shooting. I have tech…range finders, and a ballistic app in both phones, and both tablets. Do I refer to these often? No. I think they’re great for playing with my air rifle, but I rely on my DOPE books for each gun, including ones for my air rifles AND .22’s. Tech will fail at some point.
Bergara b14 HMR, 308, 900.00. Swfa 10x42 scope 300.00 Rail, scope rings, rubber cup scope cups.. bypod about 55.00.. so, my set-up shoots under.5 at 100 yards.. So, you can build a good rifle around 1500.00.. Great video, very well done ..
I love when Rex gets nerdy with us. But 19 lbs for a 308 is a brick. I have a Savage 110 Stealth in 338 Lapua and I thought it was heavy at 21 lbs with all the toys.
I LOVE IT!! Thats what have…although, admittedly, not as pretty. I have the Savage Axis in ..308, pretty much stock, although I broke the barrel in the way you showed in one of your older videos. Didn’t have a ton of money when I bought it, but I took the Bushnell scope off, dropped a Monstrom 6x24 or 6? on it. Wanting to drop that same Arken on it in the next few months. Very accurate, especially for the price point. For all the negative reviews on it, the Remington model, and the Ruger American, it has been my favorite deer rifle. I’ve shot Winchester and Marlin .30-.30’s, .243 Savage 110, .223 SU-16, .556 AR that built with a 14” heavy barrel, currently my .270 Ruger M77, and my Savage Axis .308. Ive been given s#!t my whole life about owning a s#!t gun. I had an SKS, Russian, that hit a target, open sites at 6-700 yrds within 3 rounds and a buddy spotting for me, on a bet against 2 Remington 700’s in 7mm mag, after they called my gun a “gook gun”. Then a .7.63x54R Mosin Nagant, scoped, at 7-800yrds. I’m not a sniper, but it’s a tool. Just about ANY tool properly set up will do the job in the hands of someone who knows it and it quirks. Awesome video Rex. Very accurate, well thought out and executed. Very objective. 😁👍
Savage 110 Trail Hunter 308. I got it for $388 after rebate. Works for my purposes using BDC out to 700y. Nikon 3-9x40❤😁 0.5moa using a variety of cartridges. Repeats well, too. Heavier rifle and heavier barrel. Fully weatherproof. 308 rings steel so good. 🎉 Happy Thanksgiving. God bless our people 🙏
I've not watched your channel for a long time....simply because I've been "off to other channels." thought of you whilst working last night's shift and here I am. TiborasaurusRex THANK YOU, I fine your company most agreeable and thank you for another lovely video.
When I first got into doing long range shooting I didn't have much money at the time, so I found a Savage model 10 tactical in 6.5cm with a 24inch bull barrel for $300. I then purchased the MDT LSS gen 1 chassi with there fixed SRS stock and the glass I went with was from an up an coming veteran company by the name of Arken Optics. I went with there EP5 that only cost me $400 and was absolutely amazing until I picked up there EP5 gen2 a few months ago for the same price, the turrets are much more tighter and precise. In all the rifle with my 140gr Berger VLD handloads gave me the accuracy and enjoyment that every shooter is looking for and only for around $1,500
To piece together a rifle of that performance pretty much in line with an average price with mid to top tier rifle from any manufacturer off the shelf is quite exemplary!
Rex, this review is a damn fine and useful product. Clearly a ton of work went into this to do a true test with integrity, as is typical from you. Thank you sincerely.
A couple of observations: 1.) First thing is the exchange rate between the Euro and USD for the Steyr/Steiner. There's about a 6% difference between the 2, so you automatically inflate the price by 6% for the Steyr/Steiner/Tier 1 mount just by importing it. 2.) Military design requirements add cost. Things like folding stocks, ability to change calibers, configure for LH or RH, etc all add to the price because they require components that won't be used by any other models from that company, so the production volumes are relatively low which drive up the cost. 3.) Probably the most important, is the accuracy standard for factory sniper rifles for thousands of units produced along with the interchangeability of parts. You could pull the bolt and barrel from another SSG, place it in another chassis and get the same accuracy. 4.) You mention durability, but it's not just from rough handling or field use. Imagine adjusting the stock over and over again for different shooters for YEARS. Folding and unfolding the stock for YEARS. Thousands and thousands of dry fire cycles. Rifles that get dropped over and over again for YEARS. That's the true measure of durability for military arms which adds to the cost. Think about how many times a military optic will get adjusted during it's lifecycle. With that said, you're absolutely correct that most sporting users (competition/hunters) don't need any of those features or the associated cost. It's great to see what precision is possible even on a budget.
The old Winchester .308 Varmint rifles in a synthetic HS stock were extremely affordable, had a robust and adjustable trigger and were exceptionally good shooters.
The main difference in a sniper rifle and a target rifle is its intended use. Hathcock used a model 70 Winchester in Nam. The first sniper rifles were just really accurate hunting rifles. Iv got multiple light barreled hunting rifles that are sub 1/2 MOA and will maintain that accuracy for 10 shots. A sniper will generally take one shot with maybe a follow up shot within 2 seconds of first shot then move. No need generally for a barrel that holds accuracy for 50 rounds in quick succession. Optics are as important as the rifle. Modern scopes have greatly increased quality even in the lower cost scopes. And most of all… rifle set up and an experienced long range shooter. You can take just about any quality rifle and find the right bullet and right hand load and make it into a sub .5 MOA rifle.
Personally any rifel can be a sniper rifle . Here me out they shoot 22 LR matches 600+yrds i shoot my CZ-457 22 LR ,22 mag , 24.5in at 300 yrds on targets , jack- rabbits, prairie dogs exc. Now you can take a cheap Ruger American and shoot MOA at 1000yrds consistently. My point is dont get cought up in all the Hype and pressure from these big companies and influencers that are getting big kick backs . They try to make you believe if you dont have this $2-10,000 dollar rifle you wont be able to shoot like them BS . You can buy a cheap savage/ruger exc then buy a good barrel from $100-900 dollars your choice and get you a affordable stock or chassis $150-1500 dollars again your choice. Get a trigger anywhere from $50-500 dollars. And you potentially have depending on your shooting abilities 1 MOA or less rifle with factory ammo and especially if you Reload . My point you can build your own rifle for $1,000 or less that will most likely shoot way better than that $4,000 rifle . God bless you and your family God-bless America 🇺🇸 🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇨🇱🇨🇱🇨🇱🇨🇱
So using that logic this is what I get. Rifle-$500, Barrel $500, Chassis $750, Trigger $250. That totals up to $2000 and you haven't yet included a scope. Rex's Criterion setup was a hair over $2000 including one of the best scopes onthe market today in that price range. Conclusion, I'm way better off going with the Rex setup, as yours is going to be more like 2600 plus tax. You see what I did there?
My daughter shoot 1000rnds or so a month through their Begara B14R .22lr with EP5 scope. Regualry out to 500 yards in the wind. They have a 40 moa rail on it so they are usually need the end of travel for turret, and sometime have to hold a mil of elevation.
Its funny, I have a Rem.597 22lr that can hang with a lot of bolt guns. After the optic, bipod, and other accessories it's probably around 700 bucks worth of gear. Scope makes up 75% of the cost. Shoots sub MOA at times out to 100. I also have a KSA 722PT chasis rifle. Bolt action, match chamber, and barrel. After scope and bipod, around 1,200 bucks. So far, not a sub moa rifle. Not even at 50! Point being, no, it doesn't matter how much $$$ you spend. I automatically thought the KSA would out-shoot the 597, just not the case!
Outstanding review sir . Great information about both setups. I have been wanting to get involved in a local long range competition. But I seen the very expensive rifles I would be competing against. And my budget just wouldn't let me invest in that in that price range. But you have opened my eyes to the reality it is obtainable goal . again thanks for your for your time to make these videos. And you are obviously a very good marksman
Rex, great video. Very well done. I know a ton of people that think ya gotta spend big bucks for a great rifle. I'm sharing the hell out of this to show them it's not true. Thanks for this info. And BTW, lol, I might be checking out that Outier stuff
i guess the only difference i’ve noticed in cost is durability. it may perform similar but i had a 300$ bolt action a while ago that wouldnt shoot an inch anymore after a few hundred rounds. will it last in a storm? banging off trees? snow? thats the difference. materials not short term performance
Carlos hathcock used (among others) a Winchester model 70. Now, I’m not claiming to be anything remotely close to a sniper, but that tells me it’s more about the shooter than the rifle.
I get the point of the video. If you are an active SF sniper, the Steyr might be what is assigned or what you need for no fail. As well, of course, the Barrett MRAD if you need the different calibers. And even that had to different sets. One was barrels and parts for .30 Win, .300 Norma Mag, and .338 Norma Mag. The other one was ..308 Win, .300 win Mag, and .338 Lapua Mag. And one might need those. But if shooting state side and not in an armed conflict, the budget rifle is going to work just fine. It also helps to remember the job of a military sniper. The sniper's job is not to shoot a pinkie finger at 1.5 miles, like they portray in "The Shooter." It is to get a center mass hit in an IPSC size target out to about 600 yards, at most. Most sniper engagements in theater are less than 600 yards, a majority, at least in urban environments, less than 300 yards. So, yeah, build what you can afford and get really good at it. Maybe later you can enjoy the gucci gun, if even then. But, for now, learn what you can on really good equipment that does not drive you into debt.
6061.... nope.... I'll pass. 6061 is bubblegum soft. There's no excuse for not going with 7075 . Material cost and manufacturing times are, near as makes no difference, the same. If they really can't eat the 3% difference to drastically increase product quality, then they should increase the price 5%. If they can't do either, then I'll go with a company that can.
Thanks Rex for the method breakdown. Interesting weight values. I thought my WM was heavy at 15 pounds. Noted in the video, the recoil might have been slightly less on the Savage? Thanks mate. Andrew Nz
I loved that review awesome, and what you stated at the beginning it's the loose nut behind the gun that makes the biggest variance that's not word for word. 100% true I'm short rifles that the owner claim they were junk. I was able to shoot under one inch for five shots. And some days I can shoot like a pro other days I shoot like a ho. Anyway great video 👍👍
And a “deer” rifle. 😁. It was also the round in the 1903? Springfield. One of our first sniper rifles. I got a hold of one back in the 90’s and regret selling it every time I go to the range.
I always wanted a Steyr ssg08. I currently have a sako trg in 300 win mag which i love. These military rifles ARE built different. Maybe I'll never need it but its good to have it. The TRG is much lighter than the steyr but I'd say equally rugged. With a Schmidt bender pmii fully setup it weights about 14.5 pounds (instead of about 18 lbs for the steyr).
EP5 om my M77 MKII in 300 WM. Finicky dam rifle to get sub MOA had to play with Seating depths so I shot 80-100 rounds through it. The scope had not moved one iota, wait is that on the dials? I'm gonna switch over to Berger Bullets 185 classics and start with Berger's recommended seating depths, If it tracks with the last loads they will be longer by .015" Two thumbs up for the Arken and the Zulus is friggin amazing.
I've got a Tikka Tac A1 and Delta Stryker. It's not the limiting factor. Is it as good as an AI for military use? I'm sure it's not, but I'm not "military grade" either 😉
Good stuff Rex. Did you leave that Axis trigger stock or did you do a trigger job? I got one of those M Carbo budget trigger fixes for my Axis 308 but haven't installed it yet. The stock trigger is pretty heavy and varies with each individual gun.
The only thing I can say bad about the Arken is the Allen cap screws. They come loose. There is some kind of locktight that would help hold them, it like a blue light but I've never seen it. My daughter's sight in their rifles about 5 times a month.
Vibra-Tite will give you some insurance, but I have never had any of my hex turret screws come loose and I run around 25 Arkens and have been using them for 5 years... snug them tight and they will stay.
G’day from Down Under 🇦🇺 Rex. Great video as always mate. But I’m gunna have to ding ya, for being a bit of a copy cat 🐈⬛…!! Because Ray from the X-Ring UA-cam channel posted a video about a month or so ago of pretty much the exact same build. The only differences were that it was a 6.5 CM and he changed out the bolt handle. Other then that it was identical…!?? 🤷🏻♂️ Anywho I’ll let ya go this time. Lol and I hope the you and all the Rex family have a very Merry Christmas 🎄 and safe and prosperous New Year’s 🥳 Cheers 🍻 mate. I’ll be cya when ya bum cracks 😉👍
I have a former Dick's Special VT11 Savage 24" heavy barrel Accutrigger. Shoots clover leafs at 100 yards. Just curious, I use over the counter Federal Premium GM308M 168 gr to get these results. Just wondering Rex, can you sry this ammunition in that Outlier at 100 yards. This is what all my Savages like and give me great results.
Excellent video, also thanks to your partner, always best to have another person checking out the performance of a gun. The music over, at one point, seemed little bit too loud to me, but not worth changing. Liked the choice of .308 ammo load. Maybe you could use this same style of comparison on more videos, I enjoyed watching your video and want to watch it again to see what I missed. Please do some more reviews of other platforms when you have time, great job 👍 it definitely was entertaining 😀 GOD bless you ♥️

Rex, as usual, great stuff!
Really great analysis. Thanks for breaking it down.
Glad you liked it!
God bless our people 🙏
I have a savage 10 and it’s sub .75 MOA in an oryx chassis. Incredible rifle and stock trigger for the price. Total under $1000 without optics.
Wait...what? The ammo used was produced by the barrel maker on the budget build? Which was 11% heavier...
Oh, yeah...that sounds fair.😂
To piece together a rifle of that performance pretty much in line with an average price with mid to top tier rifle from any manufacturer off the shelf is quite exemplary!
Need? It’s never been about need.
😎
Wow that rifle shoots! And with just moderately ok ammo. im impressed
Rex, this review is a damn fine and useful product. Clearly a ton of work went into this to do a true test with integrity, as is typical from you. Thank you sincerely.
Merry Christmas to you Rex and Family, God Bless
Thank you for the kind words, continue to follow His WORD to Truth 🙏☝🏼❤️
Thanks Rex, I really enjoyed this. I've been kicking around building a precision rifle for some time now.
Awesome video, thanks Rex. "Beware of the man with one gun"
Very informative test. Was quite the surprise to see that Axis perform. Thanks REX QSL...
Great Video Rex. Good to see you out there behind the rig.
Styer bringing back the magazine cut off feature from 100 years ago lol😂
Those outlier are wild, arken finally shows on there website there outlier barrels
That was good shooting even in the cold. I don't like shooting in the winter here...too cold. Looking at getting an Outlier barrel. Thanks.
now that sir is how you press the trigger
Thank you REX and SAW. Not a Sniper Rifle but sure as heck would get the job done. Ill be checking your links.
HANDLOADING will tighten the groups of that Styer
i guess the only difference i’ve noticed in cost is durability. it may perform similar but i had a 300$ bolt action a while ago that wouldnt shoot an inch anymore after a few hundred rounds. will it last in a storm? banging off trees? snow? thats the difference. materials not short term performance
Carlos hathcock used (among others) a Winchester model 70. Now, I’m not claiming to be anything remotely close to a sniper, but that tells me it’s more about the shooter than the rifle.
Thanks for a great video!
The sniper's job is not to shoot a pinkie finger at 1.5 miles, like they portray in "The Shooter."
It is to get a center mass hit in an IPSC size target out to about 600 yards, at most.
The Action on the Outlier does not appear to be all that smooth, is that the case or not.
6061.... nope....
Looking for a Steyr SSG PII with the double set triggers. Had one when I was young…
Thanks Rex for the method breakdown. Interesting weight values.
I thought my WM was heavy at 15 pounds.
Noted in the video, the recoil might have been slightly less on the Savage?
Thanks mate.
Andrew Nz
Awesome! Thanks, Rex and SAWS!
I get the same exact barrel in the ssg-08 when I buy a 1200 dollar THB SX. EXACTLY THE SAME.
+1 sub to SAWS, thanks for the reference Rex ! Come on guys, he only has 5.4k subs at the moment, let's bump that number up !!!
Great test!!
Steyr are some of the best rifles and hand guns🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Rex i really like your old videos where you were teaching long range shooting
The old Rem 700 30.06 is a dear rifle.
@@Tactical-Musketeer I have had mine since 1976.
And a “deer” rifle. 😁. It was also the round in the 1903? Springfield. One of our first sniper rifles. I got a hold of one back in the 90’s and regret selling it every time I go to the range.
Great review Rex!🔫🔫🔫
Hey Rex. Do you prefer the Schmidt bender 5-25 or that Steiner you have on your Steyr?
Thank you 😊
Saw the barrel plug you did and ordered a pre-fit in 300 PRC. We shall see. Where are you getting the Outlier ammo? Didn't see any on their site.
wow, what a comparison !
Outlier ammunition? Has that hit the market? Or something will see soon?
Good stuff Rex. Did you leave that Axis trigger stock or did you do a trigger job? I got one of those M Carbo budget trigger fixes for my Axis 308 but haven't installed it yet. The stock trigger is pretty heavy and varies with each individual gun.
Very good video, thank you!
Government contracts make everthing more expensive.
Thanks Rex
Shalom
Great video
The only thing I can say bad about the Arken is the Allen cap screws. They come loose.
There is some kind of locktight that would help hold them, it like a blue light but I've never seen it.
My daughter's sight in their rifles about 5 times a month.
Vibra-Tite will give you some insurance, but I have never had any of my hex turret screws come loose and I run around 25 Arkens and have been using them for 5 years... snug them tight and they will stay.
Try Loctite 222 or 222MS, they are purple.
Don't know where you got your prices...$4500 for SSG08 from WTPARMS, ROEBUCK SC
G’day from Down Under 🇦🇺 Rex.
Great video as always mate. But I’m gunna have to ding ya, for being a bit of a copy cat 🐈⬛…!! Because Ray from the X-Ring UA-cam channel posted a video about a month or so ago of pretty much the exact same build. The only differences were that it was a 6.5 CM and he changed out the bolt handle. Other then that it was identical…!?? 🤷🏻♂️
Anywho I’ll let ya go this time. Lol and I hope the you and all the Rex family have a very Merry Christmas 🎄 and safe and prosperous New Year’s 🥳 Cheers 🍻 mate. I’ll be cya when ya bum cracks 😉👍
Rex. I love you man. 🦅🇺🇸
What happened to the Zulus? Its gone from the Arken website? I went with the Bergara HMR in 6.5 with a Leupold. Going to the Ep-5 soon.
I think it's sold by DNT now
@@kc751R I am not familiar with them.
Now i am going to have to build me a 6 creed.
Great vid, but please turn down the background music. It’s way too much lol
What about durability in the field?
Excellent video, also thanks to your partner, always best to have another person checking out the performance of a gun.
The music over, at one point, seemed little bit too loud to me, but not worth changing. Liked the choice of .308 ammo load. Maybe you could use this same style of comparison on more videos, I enjoyed watching your video and want to watch it again to see what I missed.
Please do some more reviews of other platforms when you have time, great job 👍 it definitely was entertaining 😀
GOD bless you ♥️
Awesome video 🎉
Use and skill, ie capability and capacity plus consistency.
Yes....Igen.....persze....
Because why not.
Fancy fancy!
oh man feature length
Which will shootzen better?😅 a guess a tie!
Hello brother please guide me i need help .. is that savage 12 F/TR is a good rifle ? Someone said that to me savage actions arent good ... im confused ... its 1.12 twist in .308 30 inch barrel legnth .. is that capable to shoot with 175 grain ammo.. or m118 lr 7.62x51 nato ammo? With match wining accuracy? Im talking about only 600 meter FTR match so please answer me
All great questions for the RX classroom. In short, it's the Indian, not the arrow.
@TiborasaurusRex love you thanks alot but im a new shooter i dont know how to handloads now i decided to use factory ammunation or winchester m118 lr ammo .. im curious about its accuracy ...
