Tragic that there's so little footage of these shows. Nowadays everything gets filmed, whether it's any good or not, yet we have classic tv shows from the 60s and 70s being wiped, and historic gigs like these with barely a visual record of them.
Brendan Jabbers I know it's sad that there's hardly any footage of The Band in its prime. Hardly any Woodstock footage either. The majority of performances from Festival Express were filmed, they just haven't been properly released.
@@paschkefan the Festival Express shows had my absolute favorite performance of Chest Fever. There used to be a video on youtube, but its since been removed. Damn shame. At least we have what we have, though.
Well bless my soul!!!!...i never dreamed ...id ever be able to see the video of my favorite band album...rock of ages!!.....THIS IS ONE HELL OF A TREAT!!...as robby said...at the intro of this concert...WE ARE GONNA TRY SOMETHING TONIGHT THAT WEVE NEVER DONE BE4....AND WE ARE GOING TO BRING OUT THE BEST HORNMEN IN NEW YORK TO HELP US DOIT.....WHAT A TREASURE DROVE GOIN ON HERE!!!!.
My friend used to party with folks like Rick Danko and Gary Busey in his apartment up in North Beach, S.F. He did road managing for many of the 60s bands down in the Bay area. Before I knew him.
Robbie Robortson looks real good in this video ( no homo). He might have stole The Band song catalog and license to them, but when you look that good, Sympathy for the devil, all I'm saying, but again no homo.
I suspect these visuals don't go with the sound. There's a real aversion to showing who's singing (I don't think there's a single second of Levon singing) and we don't see any crowd. I wonder if the "video" as it would now be called was recorded later?
They got into some serious junk. Fucking hell. That was dirty. That's a warning, really, if you ever want to play that good, the price you may have to pay.
They played a 4 show run at the Academy of Music, NYC in 1971 and some tracks from the shows were released back then as the album Rock of Ages and a couple of years ago they released a 4 CD/1 DVD box set (Live at the Academy of Music) of the whole thing. From the looks of it only a couple songs were filmed though which is too bad.
A great concert hall on 14th st. In Manhattan, later known as the Palladium. Rock and Roll Animal also recorded there. Demolished in 1998 for NYU dorms.
Everyone expresses differently. Levon always has a sort of grumpy look about him - I think it helps his playing and singing to be slightly on the edge.
Rick, unfortunately, looks strung out and at his worst here. They're a favorite band but this isn't one of their best efforts..imo. This is a great song.. but the rousing {much faster} rendition... that Scorsese foolishly cut from The Last Waltz..was their best song of that epic night.
Franz Farmer agreed. He's been much worse. Rick looks and sounds plain awful at the Wembley 1974 show doing chest fever. That video is on UA-cam. I've always thought that Rick sounds good at the academy shows. Great bass playing too.
No Rick may be laid back a bit on this but not strung out! He may know if a recorded concert for an album and is being a bit careful...And on the record his singing and playing are great and Richards' piano playing is dynamite
Love the Band! The Best Band ever!
Greatest band ever!!
There was nothing like the original lineup.
Agree 100% Levon, Rick, Richard, Garth, and Robbie no other like them

You just can't beat the sound of a Telecaster for that funky rhythm like Robertson plays here...
Natural like Canadian wood!
"I'd rather die happy, than not die at all" Love that line!
Robbie wrote some of the greatest songs ever.

The Band has some of the best tunes of all time
what can y'say.. thanks lads.. for brightening my life here on this earth
Was there on the 29th. What a show!
Wow! Funky and fun as hell. What a bass line. Levon's drums! Everything!
If someone knows who The Band are they’re automatically good people... at least that’s what it seems
@@blancobasnett Literally one black sheep. They inspired more music during their tenure than just about any other American Band in history..
Funny how Rock of Ages never appears on any greatest albums lists. It's top 5 for me, has the best versions of many of The Band's songs.
Rolling Stone had it at #22 but that list included some jazz and R&B too
Agreed, the greatest live album of all time.
This song is on the band's album rock of ages, absolutely great album, pure classic
Stage fright, my first album, love em
I was too young to appreciate this band but they were bad ass
Rick with the Ampeg fretless, what a sound.

The late great Allen Toussaint did the horn arrangements for these shows.

Thanks to Martin Scorcisi for the definitive Band concert on video; The Last Waltz!
Almost too funky 4 words. RIP Levon, Richard, and Rick. Those antique drums.
I think the band was at their best in the early 1970's,Of course they were pretty good with Dylan in 74.
