In several of my recent videos I tried using everyday stuff for DIYs instead of specific craft supplies. This video took that challenge up a notch as I didn't want to use any art materials at all. A typical sock plush would require polyester stuffing, some sewing, painting or glueing on the eyes etc. This Teru Teru Bozu inspired plush is stuffed using another sock, tied using a tea bag, decorated with DIY black paint and the remaining details were made using a deconstructed surgical face mask. There are actually tonnes of thing in your kitchen and bathroom that can double as craft supplies so have a look around :)!

Joanna I haven't had the time to say this for so many years now, but thank you for being a huge inspiration for me! I learnt to do D.I.Y.s using your videos and I always felt the joy crafting, especially when needlefelting and making sock plushies! This video is such a super cute idea; I need to make one soon hehe :)

There are so many substitutions you can use for this for those who don't want to waste a mask. Instead of using 2 socks, you could stuff the inside with dried used coffee filters, used dryer sheets, any type of single use plastic bags. Also for the make shift needle, any twist tie would work. You can find them on bread bags or some trash bags come with them. For the String or elastic, lay out a mismatched sock, cut it into rings/loops. This is also good for make shift hair ties. Use these loops for the neck and for the loop to hang it up.
I think it would be better to cook a used mask and use this instead of a brand new one, as you're supposed to throw them away after one use anyway

Actually no you shouldn't use a used mask as you are going to use the bands which you wore outside and can contain coronavirus which isn't safe. And anyways masks are pretty cheap or just use some other alternative if you don't want to use a mask. Just don't use a used mask. Please

If you had a campfire the day before you did this, get a piece of burnt wood, and smash that😥
Or just go to your local lake, and get one of the for some reason utterly burnt logs and smash it lol

The only problem I have with the materials used is disposable face masks. These are very common but mainly because they are an everyday necessity for people. Some people are unable to afford fabric face masks and or a face shield, so disposable ones are the only option for them as they are super affordable right now. If you need disposable face masks for protection, then your safety comes first. I'm also glad that Joanna allows the option to make it without using mask materials. The best solution for everyone is to make the craft without using the mask or to not to make the craft unless you are sure you don't need disposable PPE and have a fabric mask and or a face shield to use for PPE. It allows Joanna's excellent video to stay up and will enable others to enjoy the video without making the craft while allowing those who can make these crafts to have a tutorial on how to do so.
Catherine Tyndale I assumed they were used face masks. You don’t want to rewear masks that you can’t wash for more than a week at a time and otherwise you would just throw them away.

Anais Wood masks (for the most part) only keep your germs in. So it’s your own germs on the mask. Plus it doesn’t live on surfaces or forever. If it’s been in a box for a week then there is nothing living on it that isn’t on every other surface in your house.
honestly, i think there were better alternatives to use for the purpose she used the face mask for. For example, the loop could have been made from any string or even cloth cut into a thin line (which can even be cut from the sock itself). The wire from the mask was used to thread the string into the hole, which you could do by hand. Or you could use a pin or a bobby pin or a strip of cardboard cut into that size and folded. Or you can get a similar type of wire from a common type of plastic file. Or yeah, just leave your used mask in the sun for a few days and then use it for the craft

If anyone doesn't want to use matches to make black paint, you could probably use black nail polish if you have it! Also, these dolls look so cute, thanks for sharing!
For the matches, i agree with you they sound just like needle felting! I'm guessing that the sound of small fibers of the sponges you normally use snapping and the burned wood are similar structurally so the sound is also similar...

I used matches at 2nd grade camp 😂 we had a campfire competition where whoever make a campfire first got more marshmallows. I guess indoors you should be more careful with matches though.
