My son and family lived in Las Vegas for 28 years. Worked their way up thru the school district that they were recently recruited by Clemson University Clemson, SC. They loved Las Vegas, and they did not gamble, but they took advantage of all recreational activities within 200 miles of Las Vegas.

Just moved back to Cali after renting a room in Vegas for a year. Was going back and forth weekly as I kept my weekend job in Cali. Didn't see many insects and never a scorpion. Gf didn't see one in the almost 6 years there. No snakes either but many in Cali. Seen 3 rattler's in NorCal and one hiking below Griffith Observatory right before it reopened long ago.
One of the positives that connects to the opportunities you mentioned is it's exciting there. If you're bored you can hit numerous places that have people out enjoying themselves and that energy can rub off on you both good and bad but it's exciting. =)

I've been in Las Vegas a couple years now, and I have yet to see my first scorpion. I'm near the wash in East Las Vegas, and when it was raining a lot there were bugs in the air -- but normally, not so many.

Move to Vegas 3 years ago after raising 3 children in a small town in Oregon. The airforce drew us to Vegas to be close to Grandkids. The city is crazy busy. So many drunk drivers, hit and runs, t-bones from running red lights. I'm terrified to drive here. Fortunately we moved to Summerlin which is the far West side of Vegas and our community is quiet, however, breakins/robberies have skyrocketed over the past few years, and they're doing it in broad daylight too. The amount of shootings in Vegas, are unbelievable but then again, we came from a small and safe little town in Oregon. Our daughter, sin in law and grandkids are heading back to Oregon and we will be right behind them in a couple of months.
If you like the party scene, I can see the draw. We love the great outdoors and there is a beauty in the desert that I never knew I would ever fall in love with.
The heat here is amazing but we also came from 9 months of cold, cloudy and rainy Oregon so we are literally lizards loving the desert. That is one thing we'll miss as we return to Oregon.....priorities, right 😊?
I cannot imagine raising children here, just way too much drugs and crime. On the upside, we do have some great neighbors. One of them told me to trust no one here. That scared me but I guess I understand it because I'm read that LV has a reputation of being full of scammers. Probably more so down at the strip but who knows.
Interesting that he says insects are a problem; he obviously hasn't lived in Oregon, lol. We love walking our neighborhood at nighttime when the Scorpions are out, with a blacklist and we look for them and squish them. It makes me feel like we're somewhat protecting our 55+ community neighborhood 😅.

I’ve lived in Vegas for 6 years and prior to that I lived in major cities of LA, Miami, Atlanta & Chicago. So what I love about Las Vegas is it is a “small town” but offers all the amenities (actually more) of major cities. There is relatively little traffic, it is easy to get around, housing has gone up but cheaper than other major cities, entertainment is endless, dining options are unlimited and it is a great outdoor area…year around…including the summer.. You do have to figure out the summer months…but as you pointed out…Mt Charleston allows for great outdoor activities. Also…if you have a pool…we are out all day long in the summer, have a swamp cooling fan for our patio and in the shade it is tolerable. The other 9 months are great and I put our fall & spring against anyone. Like most cities…many times your friends are the parents of your kids friends or teammates because you end up spending a lot of time together. Otherwise…you have to work to meet people and I do know our neighbors. Much more than I did in LA or Miami. My wife and I don’t gamble, do drugs or go bar hoping…and know that we need to be responsible if we do drink and are going to be driving. Fortunately we have taxis, Uber & Lyft everywhere. Coming from large cities…I also feel safe in Vegas. Yes there is crime…but there is in every large city. If you want insects…go to the South. We are no comparison to Georgia and Florida. Now the school issue…I have no idea why the testing scores are so low my kids did not go to school here as they were already in college when we moved here. We sent them to private schools in Miami & LA too as public schools were not great either. Not a perfect place…but we love living here

Saying the water is expensive is a joke 😂 I live in Summerlin and don’t pay more than $85. Drugs are everywhere doesn’t mean you’re gonna get hooked as soon as you move here. Blaming cartels for the drugs is like blaming McDonald’s for making you fat. Car insurance isn’t expensive. What are you driving?? Yes, it gets hot here. The schools here aren’t the issue. People need to stop treating schools like daycares. The difference in income more visible here in Las Vegas than other cities. Pay here is low, don’t expect to move here and live in a nice home if you don’t have a skills that demands good pay. You’ll end up on the east side. If you want to work 24/7 and make more here you can also do that.

Drugs, drugs, drugs. Big drug culture here. If you live in apartments or condos, you will smell people's bad habits (cigarettes, weed, cigars, and meth--yes, I said meth, which is HUGE problem here). I've moved four times in 1.5 years here. Lived in so-called good areas, like Summerlin. If you have kids or health issues, rent a house. Do not rent an apt/condo, unless you want your kids to inhale that smoke. Probably why kids perform so low here.
There is a shortage of healthcare workers (Vegas area is notoriously low paying), so it can take you MONTHS to get a standard appointment. Waiting lists are a thing. When you finally get an appointment, it's like speed dating. Never experienced anything like it. I moved from GA, where I had the best healthcare, and I'm orginally from Los Angeles.
Car insurance is sky-high because of all the DUIs and bad drivers (mine doubled). The people here are super nice, nicer than the south, but once they hop in their vehicles, all bets are off. Mean, rude, and angry drivers. Easy travel times across city. No real traffic, except near the strip.
Cost of living vs pay doesn't equal out. The jobs here pay significantly lower than ATL/Los Angeles (my points of reference), but the cost of living is just as high and getting close to Los Angles prices.

News flash: Las Vegas public schools have always been bad. Not just since weed was legalized. Nevada single biggest industry is gaming and Nevada has the lowest gaming tax rate by far in the U.S. at 6.75%. The public schools have always been underfunded, this is a self inflicted problem. The strip casinos are in unincorporated Clark County, this is not by accident.

  • @Ryan-ds2wx
    @Ryan-ds2wx 3 місяці тому +21

The "official" temps for Vegas are bullshit. A lot of people don't realize, they take the official temp at the airport, in the shade. It's not reality. You can travel literally 5min east of the strip and see temps that are 10-15 degrees hotter. And one of the hottest areas in the whole city is typically Flamingo and Boulder Highway. Anyway, I was born and raised in Vegas and even I never got used to the brutal summers. We're outside Nashville now, summers here are nothing compared to the desert. Vegas is a depressing ass place to actually live and survive.

Nice job but over exaggerated and generalized. The suicide situation is nearly not so grim, and tracks national trends, based on the article you referenced. Much of Vegas is known for having very few insects. I live toward the west and this is the FIRST year in six seeing ANY mosquitos, and very few of any other bugs. Depends where you live. Roaches, yes, most other bugs, no. Same with scorpions--many people have them but many have zero. Crime, by your referenced chart, is up .2% in 4 years which doesn't seem statistically significant. Drunk driving is rampant here, yes, but the idea that 60% of drivers are impaired during any particular timeframe is ridiculous and inflammatory. Hot (for 8 weeks, then beautiful for 10 months), lack of community, terrible schools. And the vice angle is 100% true--if you have vices they will shine to the point of breaking you, guaranteed. Also the health care situation is bad. Good doctors leave.
Most people can't imagine living here because they only know the Strip and Cops Vegas. Dear reader: We don't sleep in the Bellagio fountain and we don't live on Fremont street and you will not be slain like cattle when you enter the valley :) The positives far outweigh the negatives for me.

Auto insurance rate is crazy in Las Vegas. I retired and moved from Honolulu to Las Vegas in March 2023. I shipped my car over here and my auto insurance premium more than doubled. I was paying $530 for 6 months of auto insurance premium in Honolulu. My insurance company of 30 years increased my premium to $1,100, so I changed insurance company. The new company charged me $966.89 for 6 months in July 2023. The new company increased my premium to $1,073.22 in January 2024, and again to $1,361.99 in July 2024. I have not had a ticket, accident, or claim in over 30 years, and my average driving miles in Las Vegas is less than 100 miles per month because I travel out of town to visit friends and families often. Also, because I'm Italian, I was introduced to mobsters that are in the black book. I'm also friends with some police officers. So I have a well rounded view. Bye bye Vegas, but thanks for the few million that I've made here, the house that i've had for over twenty three years, but sold it in 2022 for a nice profit and thanks for the memories. P.S. So what doesn't help with the education system is they do something not every state does, they combine the testing of ESL and english speaking which causes the scores to be lower than some may think. I found this out from my Boss's wife who is a teacher and it also depends a lot on location of where you are, northern area isn't fantastic, it is way better to the south. It is a weird thing in Vegas. So far I've talked to my buddy that been there about 4-5 years so far and hasn't shockingly seen a scorpion at all . I've learned so far to just set aside 20-30 dollars every few weeks and only spend that gambling or none at all. The friendship thing I can see being a major issue, but I was lucky and have a friend and have become close to some communities in the Vegas area. Thanks for another fantastic video.

I lived in Tucson for 7 years. Yes, you stay inside and shoot pool and get toasted. You do have to check yourself. Now with youtube you can stay inside. That water cost helped me decide. How do HOA's not have to charge $500.00? Yes Mexico needs to stop the Cartels, but do not want to face reality. Our cities are paying a dear price. Just the other day i was walking in San Diego and saw a young man passed out on a side walk in that weird position that Fentanyl users take. These types are all over, a social disaster. In Tucson to avoid isolation you go to the bar. The Wooden Bucket and Mister Billiards were haunts. Remember the woman who was on a Vegas sidewalk covered in bees who just given up? The medics arrived and she was saved. I am looking for my retirement crib and LV is now off the list. Pot shops on every street corner are also very bad for society. P.S., my great love is a nice Mexican woman and i am not against people's heritage, but people need to call it as it is and to do otherwise is not equality. A friend who has a house in LV goes hunting for scorpians
in his back yard which can be full of them. Thanks for your honesty!
