Today, I loaded Titegroup powder into three of my 44 Mag cases. I topped them off with Hornady 180 gr HP bullets . Only one of my manuals had a recipe for Titegroup powder. According to Richard Lee's manual (2d Ed'n) I could go from 10.3 gr (1459 fps) to 11.5 gr (1544 fps) of Titegroup. So, I started low and worked up. I loaded one case with 10.0 gr, one with 10.3 gr, and with one with 10.5 gr. When I chronograped them, the 10.0 gr gave me 1315.2 fps. The 10.3 gr gave me 1374.5 fps and the 10.5 gr gave me 1392.2 fps. The revolver I used was a Ruger Redhawk, with 5.5 in barrel. The chrono I used was my new Garmin chronograph. The Garmin uses radar to get a bullet's speed, so I was able to set up inside my shed and shoot, while it rained, BTW - it has NEVER failed to get me the speed of a bullet (even my silenced Taurus .22 pistol) - I really like this Garmin even though it was expensive. Since I have room to increase the charge, later I'm gonna load 10.7 gr, 10.9 gr, and 11.1 gr and clock them. The three cases I shot today showed no signs of excessive pressure. My primers were plain old large pistol primers. I wish I knew what length barrel Lee used to get his speeds with. My 5.5 inch Redhawk was slower than whatever he used. Ya'll take care.

The thing I love about old school powders ( like Unique, 4227 & 2400) is that there are decades of long established loading data out there. No trouble getting enough load data for them.

If you get a Hodgdon manual Titegroup has loadings for just about every pistol caliber, even if it is not the best it saves me from having to stock 8 different powders. My favorite thing about it is it is very efficient , most loadings use less than half the grain weight of other powders for similar results.

H110 accelerates forcing cone erosion. There is even a warning in the nosler manual. Imr 4227 is dirty. The most versatile is 2400. I use it in 10mm, .357,and .44mag.

Very informative review of powder selection for type of purpose. Very glad you highlighted overall pressure for various powders and loads since this is critical information reloaders must be aware of. Safety first.

I always liked 2400 and 296/110 but 800x performs best, however doesn’t meter well!

I really like 2400. Used to use 4227 but found I got a lot of unburnt powder in the forcing cone and bore.

Right Imr 4227 is dirty. 2400 is my favorite for any magnum pistol cartridge.

I had good luck with 13.0 gr of unique behind a 180 gr JHP.

4227 is so easy to work with . H110/296 is best for full powered jacketed bullet loads. There is more danger loading H110 below the minimum recomended load . 4227 is great for 44 Magnum. Will not give highest velocity but is accurate without the heavy muzzel flash of H110.

Why is it dangerous to load H110 below the minimum recommended load?

The ONLY time I run Lil’ Gun in my .44 magnum is with 300 grain hard cast gas checked bullets. Everything else gets blue dot, or 2400.
