    Even though Mod Podge is now too expensive for me to use on larger pieces of furniture, I must say that the products I used it on around 30 years ago are all still totally intact. The coating on the outside is still as thick as it was at the start. Nothing has yellowed over time- though I know that's happened to some people.

    If you're in the US looking for ronseal, look for Minwax Polycrylic or Varathane Polyurethane (water based) I personally picked up the 2nd one at Home Depot :)

    • @ColonelSandersLite
      @ColonelSandersLite 5 років тому +1

      I can say based on experience that minwax polycrylic is not the exact same thing as acrylic medium that you would use on a miniature, though it may be close enough to work in most miniature painting situations (I don't know). When fully cured, the minwax product is harder and more brittle than other acrylics.
      How do I come by this knowledge? I'm into archery and build my own bows and arrows. I prefer the traditional style of bow with no cutout for the arrow to pass through, meaning the arrow must flex all the way around the full width of the bow and it will continue to flex and twist in the air until it hits the target and expends all of its energy. I have experimented with a variety of finishes for protecting my arrows, minwax polycrylic being one of them. I have never had a problem with any acrylic paints used for cresting or decoration, but the minwax polycrylic had severe problems with chipping and flaking due to the flexing as the arrows aged. As a point of comparison, traditional nitrocellulose lacquer, generally viewed as much less flexible than acrylics, stood up to the flexing with no problems.

    Back when I first started model painting I used artist gesso as a cheap primer alternative. I got the idea from a website or Reddit page I honestly can't remember. I wonder if it how it would work as a foam sealer and be tough enough as your mix or regular modge podge. They do make black gesso but you can just tint the more common white gesso with paint to color it. I imagine it would work rather nicely or at least good enough for terrain work. Hmm I got to thinking if you goal was tough foam sealing then here are a few more below.
    Spray primer- be careful not to spray too close. The solvents within the can will melt the foam so spray from a foot away and in light quick coats, to allow the solvents to evaporate quickly. Edit I meant the thicker filler primer. sorry
    Spackle/Filler/Drywall Compound- All these seem to work for the Terrain Tutor(Another tuber that focuses on terrain for wargamming) but never really had a chance to do large scale terrain pieces with the stuff. His tips with working with it are watering it down a little and get a damp brush and/or wet your fingers and rub it down to even it out.
    Liquid Rubber- I know people have used flex-seal (or any liquid rubber sealant) to seal larping and cosplay props so why not terrain pieces they make a brush on and spray can variety. I'm sure if you put a few light coats would work wonders at sealing it up, and making it a hard rubber exterior shell. They come in white or more commonly black. But Plastidip (a US brand I think) does make a variety of colors. Never seen anyone tint them so think your stuck with the color out of the can.
    Really would like to hear anymore ideas?
