Not in NYC. It was a dump in 1986. Just like where it is heading now. It cleaned up in the 90's through 2000's. I think we always have a tendency to romanticize the past.

I remember my mother telling me that if you had a car phone in those days, you were well off. My mom used to own a ‘88 corvette and ‘87 300 E and both had car phones

Yep, it was a weird time. You had a built-in phone like this, and then in the late-80's/early 90's they started putting them in bags so you could move them from car to car or bring it inside. Plugged into a "power outlet" (cigarette lighter port) in the car.

When he was on the phone he said he was east bound on the Santa Monica Fwy. He was going westbound toward the ocean from Vermont Ave. Then at the end he said he was southbound on the 405 when he was heading to the San Fernando Valley going Northbound. This dude was probably fired for sucking at driving.
