All these years I thought un-popped kernels were a result of a flaw in the kernel itself. Who knew it was just a result of heat distribution? This is a wonderful tip!

what temperature do you have the heat on though? Doesn't it matter if you're at medium or high?

Thanks for this awesome tip, I regret not knowing how to cook popcorn sooner! Literally just found this video after getting frustrated with the sheer amount of kernels left unpopped at the bottom of the bag I bought from 7-11 (they're like half a bag's worth). Ran to kitchen, used your method and came back with a bowl of delicious freshly popped corns. Why did I buy these from the shop again? More people should know this.

    Hi Julie,
This worked so well for popcorn - thank you.
You made this a long time ago but in case you are still here any chance you might try it for buckwheat, even better for tartary bckwheat?
I've been trying to apply your popcorn method but not being very successful. I'm thinking it might just be a matter of getting the right combination of heat, minutes waited etc for the smaller grain but cannot get it right!. The buckwheat pops very well, throwing off the seed case but also leaving a lot of unpopped seeds. Tartary buckwheat is very healthy with high levels of rutin - but bitter. The popping makes it very palatable so very worth getting the method refined!

This makes me wonder if it would be even more efficient to put them in an oven dish and cook them in the oven (with a lid on the dish of course!) as the heat distribution is, well, everywhere!

I tried it just now and ended up with 2-3 badly popped kernels instead of 10 or more! Plus the ones that were popped had far fewer 'hard bits'.
