When I first arrived in Edinburgh, I forgot about my hotel, I stopped in front of Royal Mile and started to take pictures. Then stopped in front of a hostel as it looked like from the Harry Potter books and took pictures. I literally forgot about checking into the hotel, because I was that mesmerized by its beauty and much resemblance with the Harry Potter world. (Did I forget to mention that I'm a crazy fan of HP books? Yes I am😅)
tip: Edinburgh Art Festival is the UK's largest annual festival of visual art, was told lasted the whole month of august(warning: will close some streets for performances)
I would love to see Edinburgh in person. Being a Harry Potter fan since its release way back in the early 2000's, the scenery and architecture seem to give off a buzz that is only truly felt in person. Happy to see HBO Max is planning a 7 series program based off the original books.
JK has completely debunked the myth that Edinburgh inspired Diagon Alley etc. She tweeted that she'd never even been to the majority of the places folk quote.
Now look-up William McGonagall. He is not only Britain's worst poet, but worst stage MacBeth, too. His story is a story waiting to be turned into a musical. And I am confused. J.K has recently declared that Edinburgh has NOTHING to do with Harry Potter. Now re-watch this video. I am still confused!
Well, weather there is truth or not we always love to hear such interesting stories and sub-plot in an epic fantasy. It could be urban myth bug no doubt such things amuse us. Thanks for your comment and sharing your thoughts.
I don’t know why she’d declare that since it’s well known she wrote Harry Potter exactly there on the streets of Edinburgh…. She said so in early interviews and the tour guides know tidbits. Greyfriars was probably the most interesting part of the city…. Powerful energy there
I'd like to know whether J.K.Rowling had been in Prague before she wrote H.P.? In Prague you still find many traces of the alchimists during the reign of the magic obsessed emperor Rudolph II in the 16th century who wanted them to find the Philosopher Stone?
The ubiquitous graffiti really undermines any positive aspect of this ancient city . . . There’s barely an exterior shot in this video in which I can’t see graffiti 🙄
the birthplace to harry potter when she first put pen to paper was in her flat above a sports store in clapham junction London. she did do some writing in the elaphant house. the first time she had the idea for HP was the manchester -london train. she hadn't even been to Edinburgh yet when she created hogwarts. she couldn't drive so the parking meter that the tour claims she used is false. also she was not inspired by that subway underpass. also that colorful street was not the inspiration for diagon alley. im just relaying her tweet thread from May 2020 when she decided to put to bed a lot of rumors.
Absolutely right. She mentions this in her Introduction to 'Reading Round Edinburgh', She was already writing when she was in Oporto. She also states that she had written about Hogwarts four years before coming to Edinburgh, in spite of the rumours that it was based on a public school in the city.
Absolutely right. In her Introduction to 'Reading Round Edinburgh' she says that she had already written about Hogwarts four years before she ever set eyes on Edinburgh. She also said that she was already writing - sitting on pavements - when she was living in Oporto.

Yep, she's completely debunked the rumours about Edinburgh being the inspiration. I think a lot of folk confuse the imagery of the films with the books
I used to work in Edinburgh and the job took me well off the beaten track. Let me say it's a weird and wonderful place steeped in folklore and mystery.
Unbelievable annoying more to see than a movie row. I guess european culture had in walking distance magician schools and there were also university, so see it like a movie that you seen flying persons and magic animal.
@@franc9111 First of all, you don't have to live in a place to see pictures of a place and the fictional Hogwarts is located in the Highlands of Scotland, it's not a stretch that Scottish architecture be a reference, or maybe the idea was there and living in Edinburgh honed the look - because a lot of Edinburgh is in Hogwarts - I'm through there 3 or 4 times a week.
@@bannjaxx Floris Books published - Reading Round Edinburgh - A Guide to Children's Books of the City in 2007. J.K. Rowling of course wrote the Introduction to it. She clearly states that she began writing when she was living in Oporto. On more than one occasion she has had to point out that she had imagined and written about Hogwarts before she had ever set foot in Edinburgh. That doesn't mean to say that Edinburgh didn't influence her later writings, but the whole idea and structure of the first books were already established in her mind before then. I quote - "Foreign journalists, particularly if wanting to film me, are usually thrilled by Edinburgh's cobbled streets, its winding alleys and looming, dramatic castle. The city offers many Potteresque vistas, and I know I sometimes disappoint when I say that I cannot point to any building or streets that have a direct counterpart in my fictional world. However, I am not always believed when I say this. A man who worked in a certain public school in Edinburgh once wrote to invite me to look around, as I had "clearly" based Hogwarts upon his workplace. I wrote back politely to thank him for the invitation, but added truthfully that I had been writing about Hogwarts for four years before I had ever set eyes on his school. I thought that would be the last I heard of him, but I was wrong; within days, he wrote back to tell me I was mistaken, and that I had definitely based Hogwarts on his school. The correspondence ended at that point, so I don't know whether he is still telling people that he works at the "real" Hogwarts: I suspect he is."
@@franc9111 Ah - OK, until your post there I would've bet good money that Edinburgh with all those gothic steeples and grand schools, cobbled streets and twisty back alleys and magnificent architecture was a direct inspiration for her fictional universe, but I'm not going to argue with JK herself - cheers for that ! 😀
*This would be really interesting if you cleaned up the audio so we can hear your words. Between the music, horrible acoustics and your accent it's really tough. Wish you would redo it -- sounds liker a fascinating story!*
Having never watched or read any of The Harry Potter stories.. we did enjoy this great city and our tour guide often mentioned HP to the other guests who were all so excited to see these sites in person. Really wonderful city. Maybe I’ll hunker down and watch ??
I really don't know how Edinburgh got linked to Harry Potter but okay! Whatever! I am dissing Edinburgh, I am from a town not far from Edinburgh and I love the place.
Now for what reason would ye diss Edinburgh. It's a beautiful , fascinating city. Oh, and I'm from a town NW of Edinburgh, but I lived in the city for 13 yrs.

Unfortunately a fire destroyed the cafe and could not able to get them. My old pics were not of great quality to put in this video. 😪
The orginal home of Sherlock Holmes ie Arthur Conan Doyle now they have JK Rowling ❤❤❤❤

Awesome! Thank you!
Edinburgh is on my travel wish list now.
Edinburgh is one of my favorite cities, walking in the haar there feels like being in a fairy tale 🌲
Wrong. Victoria Street was not the inspiration for Diagon Alley. It was The Shambles in York.
Well, there are many similar places which might be inspiration. But no doubt Victoria Street is any less charming and potential candidate
I used to work in Edinburgh and the job took me well off the beaten track. Let me say it's a weird and wonderful place steeped in folklore and mystery.
Agree, lot of places and lanes filled with fascinating stories!
Cool ambience.
Great job 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 Amazing video and Audio quality. Very informative, thoroughly enjoyed the video. Looking forward to watch many more 😊

👍 quality
A reminder to lower the volume BeFoRe you add the soundtrack to your videos. So many vids are ruined by incongruous over-loud music. So. Many.
Thanks for your comments. I will be careful in future videos and hope to have more pleasant experiences.
Well done thanks❤
Thanks
Use to street race in a Lamborghini at Edinberg........Then I stopped playing Forza Horizon 4 and started playing Forza Horizon 5
Jk Rolling why wrote this novel? But it is intresting and great intertaining.
The Elephant House was such a great cafe before it decided to cash in on the Harry Potter stuff... truly sorry to learn about the fire.
Sad... it is still closed
Most of this is not true
Agree, but such lovely fiction surrounding the mega epic is always interesting. We all love interesting stories... Isn't it? :-)
U must be a typical delusional Englishman 😂
Maybe you could learn to articulate, or don't eat while recording the voice for your videos. Shannkk yoush.
What's the spooky music used for the graveyard?
That's a stock music

I'd look at photos of Fettes College in Edinburgh for inspiration for Hogwarts.
It isn't. She has categorically stated that she had already written about and imagined Hogwarts four years before she ever set foot in Edinburgh.

I hate the fact HP is associated with my favorite city. Why couldn't he pick another city!
Hmm.... is that not adding more curiosity and more people get a chance to see this charming city?
@MyRandomTravels Yes and I don't want that because they might come live here
Fun! 😊
The music in the kirkyard is a bit much, no? Meant to be a holy peaceful site
