5 REASONS WHY I prefer my NEW 2023 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro over my previous V8 Tundra

- In this video I share the 5 reasons why I prefer my new 2023 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro over my previous V8 version. Both have their pros over one another… it’s a tough transition to make because the two trucks are SO DIFFERENT. People (myself included) don’t like change. Even if they say they do, they don’t. This new 2022-2023 Tundra TRD Pro is a 180 from what we’re used to. New IForce Max powerplant, new 10-speed transmission, new interior, tons of tech, etc… it’s a phenomenal platform. It just requires us to be open minded.
I have never been let down by Toyota… I believe in the company and know they’ll iron out the kinks as they arise. Just having the “toyota” badges gives me a level of pride that I wouldn’t have ever had in my previous gen 3 Ford Raptor.
What are your thoughts? Did I miss anything from your perspective?
Thank you for watching as always!

Respect to the truck but I have now cancelled plans to trade in my tundra for the new one. My biggest disappointment is the MPG. My V8 is almost as close as the new one
It’s not a big difference but it is 3-4 mpg better than the V8. If you can squeeze 16 or 17 on the highway in your truck you’d get 19/20 on this one
3-4 is actually a big difference especially in the long haul and all those added up. I never expected like 30 mpg so it was a nice improvement especially for a much more powerful better towing better performing truck in every category. The only thing the old one has is better sound but not worth sacrificing everything else that actually matters. Also finally has the off road goodies like crawl control, mts, and of course a locker, the old ones didn’t have any of those features even the trd pros. And it’s just a smoother driving truck and the driving experience feels very refined compared to the old one. Also it’s the safest truck for 2022 and the only truck to win the award for IIHS Top Safety Pick+ Award. The 2021 never impressed and never got good safety ratings. There are much more pros for the new one that I won’t even list but those I mentioned are the main ones especially for guys like me who need as much all around capability as you can get and guys who actually use their trucks for what they were always built for, to be the tool for your needs whether it’s work or for your lifestyle.
I am keeping my 21 pro a long time. It appears the new one is close to 20k more than I paid.
I’m getting 16.5 compared to the 12.0 in my ‘15 platinum. The power is incredible. I love the combination of twin turbo and battery boost.
I have a ‘95 rx7 with twin turbo so used to turbos.
I agree. This truck is SUPERIOR. ITS my fav veh of all time to date 😎
@@andyham6094until you have to change the EV battery and the turbo blows out haha
I'll keep my 2020 Trd Pro
I am keeping my V8 forever
You can change the adaptive cruise back to normal cruise by holding the cruise on/off button longer when turning on the cruise. The little symbol on the display will change to show which type it’s in. I just got a 1794 last week and there are tons of settings that can be modified to suit the driver’s needs.
1000 miles in on my 23’ Platinum and I’m thrilled so far . Coming from a Audi SQ5, and 21’ 1794 this rig kills it on the passes of the rocky mtns.
That’s great to hear Michael, congratulations on the new platinum! 🙌
I traded my 2021 Chevy Trail Boss for the SR5 Performance Package with AVS rear suspension. And this truck is amazing. I definitely was a skeptic myself, but after 2 road trips, this truck handled nicely, and the tech makes it convenient.
On the other hand they're are expensive... The best time to buy is the last 2 days of December if you're trying to get a deal.
They're cheaper than the competition for something with the same options.
I just got my 24 TRD pro and I absolutely love it, never going back lmao
Thanks for the review! Appreciate the insight 👍
My pleasure! Thanks for watching. =]
I’ve owned probaly 30 trucks in my long life and my ner ToyotaPro hands down is the best truck out there
As I said before this truck will definitely be better than previous generation tundra. Give Toyota a little time. In my opinion Toyota always improves and modifies its new product until they reache perfection. My new 4runner is doing about 20 mpg in the city, but i drive as I drive my plug-in hybrid cars. I remember about a little over 10 years ago when I was trying to buy 4runner, the salesman advised me to buy an extra warranty because crawl control, mts, and kdss was in that trail edition. I ended up buying tundra rock warrior instead. I love Toyota off-roaders. I appreciate your reviews because that keeps me up on how Toyota is doing with new products. I am interested in sequoia trd pro.
Theyre growing on me more for sure. When the 2024’s roll out i may take a look closer then before trading the 21
My 2021 1794 With a full touch sceeen radio is absolutely the best. The V6 Gas mileage claims were a lie. And I wont be paying 70k for a newer Tundra...they have lost their minds
Did you have to do anything to fit the ko2s on there? I tried watching a few of your videos and i didnt hear you mention it so im assuming you didnt.
Can’t wait for the Sequoia vs. Tundra TRD Pro comparison!
I’m excited to get the Sequoia! Just got a call today saying it was delayed again until 25 Jan. 😔
Are you running a lift or spacers in the front?
Super nice ride! Im looking at one too, but cant decide between iforce vs max. I dont think i need the extra power, so is $4k worth the digital display? Thoughts?
I think it is… I mean if you’re already spending this kind of coin, may as well fork up a little more to make it perfect.
I have a 2014 Tundra 1794 with heated and cooled seats ;o), My new 1794 Hybrid, will be here in three weeks, super excited!
Awesome man! Let me know how you like it when it comes in. Congrats!
You’ll love it, I love mine and have zero regrets
Everyone has their opinions and that is awesome! However, there is so much bs out there regarding the new designed Tundra, is it for everyone, No. I owned the 5.7L Tundra Crewmax and it wasn't perfect either the Tesla I own isn't perfect. I say drive it if you like it good for you if don't that okay also. Keep it moving. The new gen is a fun truck to drive in my opinion. Comparably speaking.
POV talk and drives would be cool! Just throwing this out there
I can arrange for that. Thanks for the idea!
22 TRD Pro is awesome. MINUS the alignment issues that are forcing me to buy new tires at 15,000 miles, and the infotainment/subscription issues when the free year is up.
Totally agree. The guys that bash it.. are the same ones that bashed Toyota when they first started the full size truck.. yet they became legendary. My 06 with the 4.7 was awesome... but my '23 solar octane trd pro is unreal and yes I went bold... but it's my dream truck. The power and nimbleness of the truck is almost shocking. I think this truck will soon have the same legendary status as it's predecessors.
How are you liking it? I’m considering getting one, would be multi use including a work truck to haul tools around.
i had a 2007 limited that i bought used. the inlaw had a 2011, 2015 and 2019...great trucks...fully loaded...i just bought a 2024 crewmax limited trd offroad...man that interior is miles better than the previous generation.
Don't love adaptive cruise?! Oh my... one of me favorite new pieces of technology.
Haha don’t get me wrong, it’s nice -I just find myself getting annoyed but it more often than not. 🤷♂️
y is the turning radius so much better on the other? what changed?
Are you running 35” tires?
Interior space and looks too. Nice reverse pivot 😉💰
You talk about the MPG with the 35 inch tires being 13 mpg. I have 34.5 inch Nitto Ridge grapplers (285/70/18) on my 2021 TRD Pro double cab, and it gets better than that. My theory is the rear end makes the difference. With the 4.30 rear in the 2nd gen it has no issues turning the extra weight of the tires. The 3.31 rear in the 3rd gen just struggles. My 2015 F-150 Ecoboost had the same exact tires and actually got 12-13 mpg as well and it has a 3.31 rear.
Once those turbos get spinning they drink gas like a fat drunk at the bar.
Everyone saying the v8 is so much simpler must not know how insanely over engineered that old v8 was lol. I think folks think all v8s are simple pushrod motors like chevy v8s but that is not the case. Yes the v8 will undoubtedly last longer than the tt but everyone needs to just accept the reality that this is the future for you unless you’re going to drive your old v8 until it’s falling apart. Regardless, this new gen looks 100 times better inside and out IMO.
In other words you don’t care to sacrifice the engine quality, it should be better NOT worse…
@@MarcoRodriguez-ho3ntthank your government for it
I see you, sleeper vibes for the tundra. You did it right, where's the sequoia, wasnt it a upposed to shipped to you in December
Yeah it’s super low key… which I love. Just got a call this morning… it’s been delayed again until 25 Jan. 😔
Is that the crew max 5 foot tub version?
I got a sore throat Saturday. Monday I tested + 4 covid. Fantastic!
Not sure I’d say I was underwhelmed when I got my platinum 2014 tundra. It was a great truck for its time. But you’re right the new tundra is superior in most ways.
I gotta say I’m hugely disappointed with your MPG. I don’t understand why you’re basically getting the same MPG as the prior tundra.
And you’re exactly right- the second gen tundra had a very poor front and front overlap crash test rating. One of the big issues was the handle on the front windshield beam would fly into the driver and passenger’s face. No good
Dang… sorry to hear that! Hope you feel better soon.
I’m expecting the mpg to go up a bit… the 13mpg I’m showing now is mainly based on city driving. Even then I got 16.7 on the way back from Nebraska after buying it (with stock tires)… so idk. 🤷♂️
The 2014 back in 2014-15 wouldn’t have been that huge of a shock. But in 2021 it was.
Doesnt his oversized tires fActor into the mpg?
@@balkee42 they do but I thought he had similar size tires on his priory tundra. I just expected better mpg. But like he said, the hybrid might just be for performance.
@@balkee42 Yes definitely and can kill several MPGs..⛽
I'm a Toyota guy. Love Tundras. Have a 1st gen DC 2wd. 225k miles. Very reliable. Shopping for a newer 4x4 pickup. Now I've narrowed it down. it's either the 2nd gen Tundra or new Silverado with 2.7 turbo.
A GM w/ a turbo, ofc nothing will go wrong
@@herewegoagain7403 I know but so far reports are its reliable.
I have an obvious bias here but don’t think you can’t go wrong with either. 👌 Which one appeals to you more interior/exterior wise?
@@David.D3 if you really want old school Chevy reliability you can get a left over 2022 Silverado with a 5.3 without cylinder deactivation. They stopped putting it in the 2022s due to the chip shortage but from what I see online the 2023s have dfm again. Mine is a 2022 lt without dfm and it gets 16/18. Just check the window sticker it will say 5.3 ectotec v8 w/o DFM (without dynamic fuel management) and it will have a $50 credit. The gm turbo. 2.7 doesn’t get but 1-2 mpg more than the 5.3.
@@Jay-bw3fl wait they stopped AFM in 2022?
How's the turning radius treating you?
Haha still not in love with that part… thankfully in Wyoming -it hasn’t proven to be a big issue. =]
Those 35’s ? all oem set up? No level?
I test drove a 2023 Tundra if felt smoother and suspension felt good, the interior is nice but the plastic inside is cheap and flimsy compared to my 2020 tundra, it felt like there’s a lag on the throttle as soon as you start moving, my 2020 jumps just with a little touch on the pedal the 2023 didn’t felt like that but overall a good truck just a bit too much money on my opinion although now days everything is expensive 🤷🏼♂️
Did you drive the hybrid or the regular 6 cylinder because the hybrid definitely doesn't lag
Heated seats have been a option in the tundra for over 10 years!
Not in the 2019 Tundra TRD Pro anyway… =\
@@UntamedMotors you’re right. I don’t think you could get them in the pro. I had them and center seats in my platinum though.
Why didn't Toyota make a none Hybrid Sequoia ? Reason why I'm interested in the Tundra.. Would be nice to have a the option?
I simply dont like it, if you want to go to a V6 i rather get a raptor. Its tried and true in the twin turbo v6 segment. Since I wont get a Ford though, Ill stick with my 2020 Tundra Platinum
I hear you and I don’t fault anyone for wanting a Raptor. I applaud Toyota for taking a twin turbo v6 and going the extra mile… (beyond what Ford has done) and giving it some extra torque through the battery. If you think about it, Ford’s ecoboost motor is forced to work harder to produce numbers. Whereas the Toyota’s power delivery is supplemented by the battery.
My issue with this truck is not only do you have to worry about the twin turbo, now you also worry about the hybrid components!!. The previous V8 is just simpler!. Also the backseat room especially the headroom shrunk by a good amount.
Slightly smaller back seat. Still way bigger than what most people really need… unless you’re in the NBA.
@@tommygoodman7047 all my family members are 5’10 and up and all our heads rub the roof in the back. I owned a 2018 Tundra and that was not a problem at all.
@@Odat interesting. I’m 6ft and my head doesn’t touch. Maybe in the middle seat only and I have the pano sunroof. If you skip the sunroof it’s a difference of 38.9 (‘21) vs 38.5 (new gen).
@@tommygoodman7047 I don’t know man but if I sit up straight in the back, there is no headroom at all. Maybe the trim you have is different but it shrunk for sure and you can feel it.
Pano roof makes it 2 inches shorter than the old… because the old one had a short sunroof. Not trying to sell it, but how often do you sit straight up in the car?
There are a lot of features and settings that some people and salesmen don’t know about. You can adjust a lot of the sensitivity settings on your steering wheel. A nice feature is making the steering wheel vibrate instead of beep with the lane departure
I didn't know that about the vibrating steering wheel
Great point 👌
Appreciate you sharing.
I hate that feature on my sienna
On the fence with trading in my 2019 Ram Laramie for a 2024 TRD Pro….The Ram has given me enough issues, only has 60k miles also, and not even a daily driver. I hope I’m making a good decision with the Tundra TRD pro
i heard you can have all the beeps and radar sensitivity down if you wanted at the dealership...maxx powell did that to his.
This is good to know! Thank you. 👌
Mine sucks pulling my bass boat compared to my v8. And more plastic everywhere. Beeps constantly and has tons of issues
I really want to love this truck. I'm just not sold on the reliability of the power train. If hybrid isn't about fuel economy then what is the point? I look forward to your long term reviews on this truck and power train.
The reason this truck has a twin-turbo engine and hybrid option is due to two reasons:
1. The ever-tightening noose of the EPA on emissions. This is why they got rid of the V8.
2. Hybrid gives this truck more power which is great for towing and overall performance.
If hybrid isn't about fuel economy then what is the point? Drive it and see!
For sure get a long term extended warranty.
Untamed and long term reviews?😆😆
haha, I'm not sure Untamed is capable of a "long term" review. He'll unload this within 6 months
Do you notice the turn radius when driving ?
Only when I try to U-turn. Otherwise for normal driving, no issue 👌
When else would you notice a turning radius? While staring at it in the drive way?
@@pjrodriguez9755 haha. You know what I mean silly goose
Am very glad your beginning to see that this new tundra is also a better upgrade to the last model...
It has grown on me a ton! 🙏🏼
I hate that the Cab is smaller than previous Gen and the fact that there is no storage underneath that back seat.
BUT!!!!!! 😂
Thank you for the review.
😉
I believe that the previous Tundra TRD PRO was SR5 based, and the new one is more limited based.
Not really better mpg and i have to pay a subscription to be able to remote start my truck that i already paid a bunch of money for. No way.
Not saying it's a bad truck
I'm just saying let the "puppy love" wear off.
You’re right, it’s still very new but the things I like most aren’t going to change comparatively. The V8 still wears the reliability and turn radius crowns. 👍
You should do a collab with TRD JON..both Toyota fan boys and also both with the nicest toyotas Ive ever seen
They comment on each other's post all the time now they need a real Collab lol 😆
Temp set at 83 running hot 😂 I love mine too! I don’t like the 5 point turn I have to make at some drive thru’s and I’m not loving the brakes. Hopefully they’re just breaking in.
I’m curious what you think of the steering. Kind of dead? Maybe it’s just me.
Time will tell
Yep! In 5 years people will either be clamoring for one of these or quick to pass up. I don’t think Toyota will allow for the latter. 👌
Should I buy the 2024 Tacoma TRD Pro or 2024 Tundra TRD Pro?
Why or why not? Would love peoples opinion’s. Why would you buy one over the other?
You had it over a week? Sounds like it’s almost time to trade it in! 😂
Still waiting for the video about the price you paid… lol
I’m thinking on selling my 11silverado 2500hd for a tundra 2023
You talk about the interior and compare it to the Raptor and stuff. There's always going to be better stuff out there. They're always going to be upgrading technology, etc. Always going to be a comparison. It all comes down to reliability, durability, and simplicity. Toyota needs to stay in they're lane still. That's what we all love them for. I know you're doing reviews, but just stuff comparing it to the raptor lol. That's in a whole other league, and not even half as reliable. Technology is coming out monthly these days. And all people want to do is upgrade their cars and trucks and seems like for something fancier and more electronics, blows my mind
I’d argue this Tundra will be seen as very simplistic in a few short years. Knowing Toyota, they’ll likely keep this exact platform for 8-10 years too. 👌 It’ll be in line with what they’ve always done.
"how daaaaaaare you"
Lol yup… the audacity.
Lets be honest here, that Truck will be gone before its time for the first Oil Change
Haha what truck? My new Raptor?
@@UntamedMotors once you get bored with all the new electronics and all the Advanced Nanny state safety beep crap annoys you daily, you get rid of that fake V6 Tundra right quick
@@freeravenadventures6925 we will see! 😉
Wait until you get about 200,000 miles on that engine/truck and then tell me how good it is. We will have to wait and see.
And the twin turbo will blow up my engine
You lost 6 MPG for 2in of tire?
Haha no. Maybe 1-2mpg
"I've had it a week now a have put 1000 miles on it so this makes it superior in al.ost every aspect". Do you not see how stupid that sounds? Do people not understand reliability anymore? Or really just seeing how far this truck will go without tapping out or having their first problem? This truck right off the bat had a massive recall. How is this better?
Annnnd I’ve reviewed the same truck a half dozen times before today. Press vehicle and invited to Toyota press events. It’s the better truck, pains me to say it too cause I love the V8 as well. Most people won’t agree because most people own the V8 version. Toyota priced the average buyer out of the market with the 70-75K tag too. It’s human nature to defend what we have. 😉
I’ll keep my 2020 Tundra TRD PRO probably for 20 years.
I would never buy the cheaply made “New” Tundra. You can literally push and flex the front end with 1- finger!
Weather stripping and finishing is terrible, let alone paying over $70,000 dollars 😢.
No brained, plastic piece of crap, and I know…. I’ve owned 7 Toyota Trucks, my humble opinion!
Toyota is made to last longer to 3 years like ford or Chevy do
It’s 1974. You traded in your 69 Boss 302 for the New & Improved - Mustang II.
Tundra in name only😢
Overpriced and lags behind its competitors in its market
AGAIN there’s really nothing wrong with the new truck. It’s the sticker shock that has people not liking it. Equivalent models are up nearly $20k from 21 to 22. People have been raving about ecoboosts for a decade so its not the engine or the tech. It’s the cost. That’s why so many people were mad about the MPG’s. They need a big gas savings to justify the upgrade. for the same price as buying a new TRD pro I can pay off my 2020 and go buy a Lexus IS to daily drive (which is what I’m gonna do)
Just can't do it! My next Truck thats going to park next to my '21 Platinum Tundra and my '21 4 Runner will be a Ford Rocky Ridge Edition or GMC AT4
The AT4 was very enticing when I was looking last month… went with my gut and got the Toyota. =]
Just buy another 2nd gen and keep it. Then whenever this one breaks, you got a gem waiting for you 😂
No tow hook……….
I think "Toyota Simplicity" is code for cheap cheap plastic and zero modern tech that was perfected in 2005, lol. 😆 No wonder Toyota Corporate LOVES you guys.
No hate, just funny.
Saw a solar octane pro yesterday at the ski hill. Really want to love it, but besides for that Toyota grill, it’s just an ugly hybrid. Sorry man. I know you won’t own it for more than 3 months anyways…
4 kids? Yikes.
Of course a new one is always better.
I dont really understand some of the changes... No front tow hooks? No other manufacturer would dream of putting out a 4 wheel drive pickup without them. From best turning radius in its class to absolute dead last? How did this happen? Less front head room than any half ton pickup? I'm 6'4. This definitely won't work for me. Less leg room and head room in the back seat and a smaller bed... how do you build a new pickup with a very similar stance and shrink every interior dimension? And how do I step up into the bed? The bumper that stuck out on both sides of the tailgate is gone!... all these wonderful changes and a $5,000 jump in price... A total failure by Toyota.
1. No tow hooks - To be honest front tow hooks are actually used by maybe 5% of truck owners. But if you do use them it would be a let down. Does not bother me I don’t have them.
2. Turning radius - I’ve heard from the beginning about this. I have to say it’s not as bad as what people say. I maneuver around tight boat launches and drive throughs just fine. Blown out of proportion.
3. Headroom - I have a co-worker that’s about 6’ 2” that bought a platinum in December. Had not said anything about not fitting.
4. Tailgate acess - yes for sure this is a huge disappointment. I don’t have the bedstep and refuse to pay them extra money for it. This part does piss me off a bit.
5. Pricing - you absolutely cannot blame Toyota for how expensive they are. I paid $68,633 for mine and it hurts. Although I didn’t finance it I didn’t take the decision lightly. I built and priced every manufacturer and they are all the same. No matter how you swing it you’ll pay the same thing anywhere else.
In the end I have absolutely no regrets on buying it. It’s an amazing truck.
Nope not superior at all. A step backwards.
I trust the opinion of those who have owned both. I have. The new one is in-fact far superior in every meaningful category… except price.
@@tommygoodman7047I trust the guy that watched a video youtube over the guys that own them
@@JasonCGreene talk is cheap right?!? These trucks…are not.
Sure if you prefer cheap plastic interior and outdated exterior. Only real drawback is the V8 growl. Otherwise the ttV6 kills it in performance
You might think so until you actual drive the truck and appreciate the new features, ride quality & power!
I am keeping my V8 forever
