Yesterday's enterprise from S3 was the first episode of the Next Gen that I genuinely love and often where I start with a re-watch. It is still to this day one of my favourite trek episodes
One of my absolute favorites was/is " Parallels" (S07E11). The reasons why are pretty obvious.. But part of it is because Worf has one of the best lines I've ever heard. When in Sickbay explaining what has been happening to him, he's asked to recount it from the beginning. To which he replies; _" _*_..everyone_*_ was at my Birthday party."._ Which always made me laugh and thing "Well then! Aren't _WE_ Mr. Popular..". lol
The producers have said they regret not being able to use the Yesterday's Enterprise story for the first TNG film (having already used it). Would have been a great way to have Kirk and the Enterprise A crew (or Enterprise B) meet Picard and the crew. Great episode.
6:50 which also created the staple of the show of “the Picard manuever”...(sits down...tugs waist of shift down)...just the crisp and formal way he did it and did it virtually EVERY time he sat down in a chair on camera...
Rick Berman is the classic line from Dark Knight: "You either die a hero or live long enough to become the villain." His work during the TNG era was amazing, but there's no denying that he and Brannon Braga had a detrimental effect on the franchise by the time Enterprise ended.
I always had an inkling that Brannon's style would not work outside of TNG when I was watching his episodes. He always wrote high concept, plot-oriented episodes which was fine when it was mixed with a variety of styles of episodes in TNG. But when he came to Voyager (and when Michael Piller was not around) , he went full on high-concept and really turned it sour for me.
Even the new uniforms were a big improvement. They just seemed more professional and had less of a pajama look. While I didn't like it at first, the utility uniform DS9 introduced was also a good introduction. Different uniforms for different assignments, occassions, and roles is standard in the military.
Carl Rood my appreciation was that they kept the jumpsuits and they were used for more “background characters”...a way of quickly and easily distinguishing commissioned officer, and other general crewers
The only thing I didn’t like with the new uniforms was the zipper being located in the back for the main cast. It yielded a cleaner look but would have been difficult for the crew to zip and unzip. I’m sure the actors had assistance getting dressed in these things.
Season 3 was indeed the launch point for the rest of the series from here on out. I found the episodes from this season forward to be much more enjoyable to watch.
Gene seemed have some idea that human emotion and reason can somehow be completely in sync. Death may be a part of life, but that doesn't mean there isn't a loss felt and you'll miss them. I like how they explained it with Data in regards to Tasha. Even an "allegedly" emotionless android misses people when they're gone. However, without knowing the backstory, I just presumed they had the child actor play it as if he were in denial. It works with the context of the aliens attempting to replace his mother. On the other hand, the fact that they left the kid alone so much makes the crew seem callous and really makes Troi's credentials seem suspect.
I said it before on this channel, I'll say it again. If you like the direction TNG took with season 3, then you like the direction that Berman took the show. I think this video proves that point, and as always, looking forward to the next video 😃
@@BerrymanMovies roddenberry's position was, officially, his way or the highway. The whole reason Maurice Hurley was put in place when Roddenberry had to take a step back was because Hurley acted as the proxy of Roddenberry and again, roddenberry's way or the highway and it was hurting the show. Whether or not you like what Rick Berman did with later Star Trek series, he pulled the nose up on TNG by doing things that Roddenberry wouldn't, like allowing the cast members to have creative input on their characters, and putting the right people in place to allow for the show writers flexibility with regard to creating script for the show. Roddenberry's vision would have had the human race essentially become round-eared Vulcans and that approach was not winning anybody over so I think Berman screwed up a whole lot less than you're giving him credit for. Whether or not he lost touch with it towards the Enterprise era is a different argument for a different video in my opinion

While on the bridge they can only say "Eye Sir" when they are on their own we can see them more so we actually like them as a character. I feel these episodes are still missing on the new Streaming trek.
I said I would support you by commenting first. So that's what I'm doing. Happy to be here! So like, while I was happy that Bones 2.0 (Pulaski) didn't come back, I think it might have been cool to introduce a new doctor. I didn't realize Dr. Crusher was such a fan favourite. To me, she didn't really do anything overly memorable in season 1. Perhaps she was just a fan favourite because she was the lessor of two evils. I mean, if I only had a choice of either Crusher or Pulaski, I'd have chosen Crusher as well.
Well thank you for the support :) And yes, Crusher WAS/ IS a fan favorite. She was one of the elements of Season 1 that gave Picard more life, with the perfectly executed sexual tension!
Rewatching season 2, I really liked Pulaski's bedside manner. Any time you see her tending her face lights up. Unfortunately those moments weren't highlighted enough.

Ah, finally, S3 TNG; the season when things got better. As for character growth is the best thing about the season. Honestly, if they had done that in S1, Tasha might have made an appearance in Picard, being a kickass character being awesome in the shade of the Federation and the ruins of the Romulan Empire. But still, we got Yesterday's Enterprise, with Yar, and allowing her to return to the show as her daughter, Sela, for later seasons. Sort of wish we'd seen Sela in Picard, but there's always a chance for that later.
I see Season 3 as the point where TNG hit its stride. The Best of Both Worlds Part 1 is, by far, the single best episode of Trek ever written. I'm somewhat disappointed that you didn't mention it in this video.
This is a general historical overview, and since that particular 2 Part Episode is getting it's OWN specific video, where ALL that will be discussed, you shouldnt be SO disappointed :P
Although it didn't come to pass for 'Captain's Holiday' there were same sex couples shown on Risa in 'Let he who is without sin…' a decade later on DS9, however that is a pretty awful episode. One off topic thing about the windows on the Enterprise D model, if you look the windows on the forward part of Deck 2, the first deck that stands up from the saucer, match the windows of the refit/A stern of Deck 2 exactly. This was because Andrew Probert, who designed both ships made it so that wardroom set originally built for TMP could be redressed and be in that location on the new ship. A scene was shot, of Wesley's birthday, in S1 but it was cut. The movie wardroom set was normally redressed as a ward in sickbay on both the Enterprise D and on DS9.
Great video. I agree season 3 was not only allowed TNG to go to season 7 and spin off two successive spin offs. Though I agree that by Enterprise Rick Berman was played out I have always wondered how Enterprise would have gone if either he was still energized as it were or if he handed the reins to someone else, not only could Enterprise have gone on longer but maybe we could have had the second golden age sooner. Though not sure who he could have handled it off to cause as far as I could tell there wasn't really any one there to take over.
I always felt season 3 was a turning point of the show before I read about the behind the scenes. I liken Berman "hatred" in the 90's to Kurtzman "hatred" today by some fans. Too bad about Wil Wheaton, Just a little leeway could have gone a long way to satisfy him and I wonder how his "character" would have evolved if he was in the entire run of the series. (yes, I know fans hated Wesley) but still I wonder. Thank you for this video. Will you be doing the same for DS9, Voyager and Enterprise season by season breakdown?
Why are we pretending not to know exactly which producer prevented Wheaton from being in that movie? Granted, Berman adjusted certain qualities of the show so that it could live on well into the 90s. But he also kept some episodes from really impacting simply because he was too afraid of rocking the boat or too prejudiced himself.
Berman's mistake in Enterprise was time travel. Lazy writing, and the arc it lead to, the seasons search for the enemy, was hard to sustain after 4-5 episodes. You have a theme, but have to string it out to fill in the season, got dull, just like Voyager: trying to get home, but not just doing fine, but actually having a ship that was never falling apart, never having to compromise to keep moving forward after years of travel, war, damage, energy issues.... DS9 had the war, but the war was fought and moved forward easily. Still, all three were good shows and told good stories with good characters.
Thank you for the great video! I feel like if Berman wouldn’t have come on and Gene and Hurley would have stayed, TNG would’ve petered out and been canceled after it’s third season like TOS. Kirk and the gang might have had one or two more movies, and that would have been it. No DS9 and beyond. No TNG movies. Trek would have been a primarily TOS-based franchise with a 60s TV show, a few good movies, and TNG as a failed attempt at keeping it relevant for 80s kids. So like you said, we have Berman (and Behr) to thank that this alternate history didn’t happen!
Nothing against Wil Wheaton but Wesley was annoying. There is no way that the US Navy would promote an inexperienced kid to ensign and put him at the helm of the ship ahead of other people who are real commissioned officers who are trained and experienced, so I wouldn't think Starfleet would do that. I used to drive a submarine. I had to be trained and I was supervised until I was able to competently do the job of driving a $2 billion boat. There was an episode in the 2nd season called Where Silence Has Lease. Wesley is at the helm at the beginning of the episode. He leaves for some reason... maybe to go to the head, and he is replaced by a REAL Starfleet officer who is killed by a malicious alien named Nagillum as an experiment to study death. Soon after this, Wesley is seen back on the bridge at the helm. If Picard hadn't let Wesley leave the bridge, we could have gotten rid of Wesley right there.
I always felt like the ‘kid in Starfleet’ Wesley thing was invoking the days when midshipmen in the Royal Navy (etc) used to be aged between 11 and 18. These kids were trained officers (not just crewman or trainees) who could command the deck during night shifts and even lead boarding parties. Obviously that’s not done these days and wouldn’t likely be done on a highly-technical starship, but I felt like Wesley’s story always had that vibe to it. (PS Thank you for your service.)
In regards to the whole Rick Berman issue, I will praise him where due and constructively criticize him when he does wrong such as the whole comments he made about Terry Ferrell. But, to say he killed Star Trek is silly. If we didn't have him, the franchise might have died. We can say Berman made bad decisions, but, we should not paint him as a supervillain. He wasn't the only one in charge, we also have to realize, he probably had to report to executives at Paramount in the Television Department who had even more say than Berman. He was just an executive producer with time and a creator.
@@TriAngulumAudioStudios I just had to stop watching a video about season 5 because the photo they were on as they said only one episode was special was the only episode of TNG I really do not like (where picard spends the whole episode imagining he lives his life in that village)
While you are right about Rick saving the franchise by giving writers an actors more freedom and input, he indeed also killed it by forgetting that and having a more direct control of everything, and ignoring the casts input at all turns. He's also the one I blame the most for sabotaging any attempts for the show to acknowledge LGBTQIA+ people exist at all. "Meh middle America ratings!"
No, you're not right about that at all... His problem ended up being not changing himself and Trek with the times... That's all that's it... He used the same cookie cutter approach he had used with TNG and VOY and it simply didnt work in ENT... The world was and had changed... As for the LGBTQIA+ comment, it's not as black and white as you and some think. And in the future I WILL be discussing this exact issue, so stay tuned!
It was the total opposite of TOS - their 3rd season showed a huge drop-off, and is seen as TOS's worst. Whereas, TNG's third was their best one after the first two.
Yeah I remember back then when TNG first started thing dman the people are stuck up specially the captain. It got better later one but at the beginning, blah.
I quickly lost interest in TNG during season 2. At that time I told friends I enjoyed watching "Blake's 7" on PBS more than TNG...and if you've seen Blake's 7, you'll know why. despite being very cheap and sometimes ridiculous it was more engaging. Luckily TNG S3 was an improvement.
I don't think people in the 23rd century will view star trek as a particularly special "space show" but they will view it as one of the fundamental flagstones for setting up nerd culture and stuff like the MCU and fandom Wikipedia's and everything like that because the fandom of star trek predates the Internet.
I dont know about that, given that Star Trek has driven countless people to develop its technologies, and inspired so many in to specific and special career paths... I think you sorely underestimate the importance of Star Trek!
Except Star Trek had that sort of thing between Straight People since TOS. And indeed the episode has Straight Couples doing just that. Star Trek has always revealed in it's status as forward and progressive thinking. And when it comes to the LGBTQI Community, it simply missed the mark entirely, something Ira Steven Behr himself has admitted. And so if you're ok, calling Straight People fondling each other in Star Trek, then you should be ok with Gay People doing the same in the show. As apparently the Straight Fondling was ignored and you continue to call the show Family Friendly... Also last question, why did you like your own comment?
Star Trek evolved gene failed to evolve with it had he done so he would have seen that season 3 was the way it should have been i liked Gene (rip) but he got stuck in what was not what is or what could be from TOS to TNG the federation and StarFleet had to evolve and change as for cadet weaton i would have fired him long before he said he didnt like the show or felt betrayed personally he was a weak link in the show and should have been killed off after season 2

Still had a bit of the smugness with Deanna Troi putting down everyone who believes in a God in Who Watches the Watchers
" Breakout"
Sorry what?
@@TriAngulumAudioStudios You said if we think the season is a breakout. "Breakout"
@@TriAngulumAudioStudios I just had to stop watching a video about season 5 because the photo they were on as they said only one episode was special was the only episode of TNG I really do not like (where picard spends the whole episode imagining he lives his life in that village)
@@TriAngulumAudioStudios I am wishing you had videos for the rest of the seasons
Oh LOL, usually people comment more then just that so it caught me off guard :P And no worries, more episodes are coming, be patent :)
The Next Generation is very much better than Voyager because this movie is my best favorite 🎥 ever !!!
It was a family show, we didn’t need people fondling each other onscreen, regardless of their orientation.
I think they could had gotten away with it if the aliens were suffentily make-up. A little more than the normal wrinkled nose or off color hair.
Season 3 is where it started picking up speed and glad they got rid of the doctor from season 2 didn’t like her
Honestly named some of my Trek online ships after the staff whom helped create tng ds9 voy ent
