Rufus is right up there with Sly and the Family Stone and The Isley Brothers, in my opinion. I bought this album, Rags to Rufus, when I was a young dude. Smokin' Room and Tell Me Something Good are also great songs from the album.
Great upload. You know it’s live performance when you have feedback from a mic. Interesting choice in guitar too. You don’t see many players of the day playing a 60’s Fender Musicmaster. I was pleasantly surprised by the tone of the single coil pickup.
@christinapazzanese2837 I actually don’t own any of the albums and only familiar with the song Tell Me Something Good. The only Soul Groups of that era that I followed was The Ohio Players and Curtis Mayfield. I liked Gladys Knight and The Pips along with The Staple Singers.
Funky Delicious song, that bass is sure thumpin’ makes you “move”, watcha given? - oh yeah! Love Chakas voice, she can sure belt it out! ❤, a pretty lady & a great band (!)
She is the ONLY female vocalist Aretha Franklin has EVER said was excellent. Remember, Aretha NEVER gave a female vocalist much credit EVER. Chaka is my all time FAVORITE FEMALE vocalist. Her VOICE and her catalog is my total favorite of all time. I loved Aretha but I didn't think she was consistent after the early 70's and Jennifer Holliday was EXCELLENT also but fell off early in her career but CHAKA, kept it going all around for me.
Tony not playing that on the record it's Ray Parker jr . check out vidioe ( Ray Parker jr- you, got the love ) him and Freddie Washington on Bass ! that's Ray riff! when you listen to ray play it like it suppose to be played...this Tony Playing don\t cut it!!
Love this version!! No shade to John Robinson. He got paid and rightfully so. But I really hate that Andre Fischer left the band in the late 70's. He held the funk hard and strong while he was there!
I remember when I first heard this hit. I was 15 going on 16 at the time, just finishing up my final year of Jr. Hi, and getting ready to start my sophomore year at Garfield Hi, and that was 1974.
Funny but I remember it being part of fashion of the day. I wore really light color washed denim overalls into the early eighties. I will say I never wore that type of shirt. It was always a tee shirt or no tee shirt depending on the weather.
@@curtisphilumalee1447 I remember guys wearing them all of the time in the late 70’s. I wore my “Hang Ten” brand too, with a tube top or sleeveless shirt on underneath. Loved them, my daughter & granddaughter have worn them, too. Fashions come and go out of style. Wish I’d kept all my clothes from back then (I had way too many), they go for a lot of money online nowadays.
@@KittyGrizGrizSame here, my favorite group since their inception. I’ve seen them several times but I badly wish could see them up close in a small venue.
I saw Chaka Khan with Rufus in the early seventies. She opened for the Eagles who then opened for the Rolling Stones that day. I was 14 at the time and didn't have a clue who she was. Let me tell you she got my attention she was that good. The Eagles stole the day for me, but she was right behind them. I was never a Stones fan.
@rodneyturner8077 can't argue with that. Just so you don't miss out on something you might actually like, do check out albums such as To Pimp a Butterfly by Kendrick Lamar or Black on Both Sides by Mos Def. I think that stuff might surprise you how good it is. But it's a free country. :)
@@warrenstrong8615 i didn't either until i heard Ray Parker play it!! when i said empty , i meant it wasn't even close to the recording / record. When a live performance tops a recorded version you know you have something special 🤪
Yes Indeed!! 2024 🎶
Agreed
Exactly 💯
I don't think that it tops the recorded version, for me it's a special performance, saw it at that time & loved it.
@@terenceoctober581 the recorded version is top
What a tight bass/rhythm section...incredible groove and guitar...and Chaka!

The whole album is great. There's even an instrumental tune that sounds as good as Herbie Hancock's band.
Love the band but Chaka is so unique ❤
If I could find a "funk face" emoji I'd put it on here....this is tiiiiight!! ♥️
My favorite female vocalist of all time, beautifully exemplifying right here why she holds this prestigious title🔥
amazing voice !
What a sweet voice.. 😮..❤❤
2024 … 50yrs later
I wish I could've seen Rufus live.
I'm old enough to have witnessed this on the only TV in the house at the time.
Chaka Khan. She’s OMG.
She's mesmerizing ❤
Chaka just blows everything and everyone out of the water. Dayum! SO POWERFUL!!
I remember this song! Awesome vocal by Ms. Chaka! 😎
did you know it was written by the same guy that does Ghostbusters?

THIS is music. Pure talent and LIVE.
Thank you. Again. For the memories, the music.. so well preserved and presented! The Midnight Special rocks! 🎶

❤ That smile on that woman is heaven. Oh and that voice ain’t bad either.
That Fender MusicMaster guitar sounds so good!
Amazingly good for the most basic of student guitars they offered at the time. Imagine if the dude had a strat .
@Matt_Kraczon I have a 1978 MusicMaster Bass amp that I put a little stouter speaker in and it's amazing.
Fender through Fender is the best sound!
@@BIZARBIES- you right 👍

Best voice and the cutest girl - period 🏄🏻♂️👌🥳
"This is tight" my fellow musicians😅 know this term and agree with me I'm sure😉 Chaka Khan together with Rufus a match made in heaven

TONY MAIDEN, WHOM I BELIEVE IS THE GUITARIST IN THIS CLIP, KICKS ASS!!!!!
Ray Parker Jr. wrote this masterpiece.
He DIDNT write it, CHAKA DID! He came up with the music and that’s his guitar riff.

He co-wrote it with Chaka Khan. Simple.

Chaka was Fine❤
What a concept. Actually playing instruments and singing live. (major sarcasm)
Damn fine. I had a serious crush on this woman back in the day. Aside from that, much funk emotion. So sweet!
Love this version!!
Beautiful sexy woman, then and now, with serious lung power. Rufus was a phenomenal band.❤
I found out at a very young age when I saw Chaka sing what the true definition of Brown Sugar was …
Oh Yeah …
Incomparable 💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚
That is some funky sh**t. Bring back the funk! 😍😍
If TMS have any audio tape reels to put together a vinyl LP of live performances like this, I'd buy it in a heartbeat

Funk was the last true musicians style to come out....then came rap.....what a bummer.
Maybe you just haven't been introduced to great hip hop yet? A lot of it is actually very funky.
