This was like a Ted Talk-tremendous insight into the topic. I have seen so many adults drop out because they felt the teacher always caters to the leaders in open level. It would be better to nurture the beginners to get new people on their feet. Your also right about the segmentation of the uninitiated adult beginners. Some can actually go to the next level in a year.

It’s such a complex and complicated topic, with so much life history and experience to take into account for each dancer. And to toss everyone into the same class, each with different goals too… it’s such a challenge to get all the pieces to fit!

This was helpful for me since I started as an adult and all the other dancers in my class are returning from learning when they were young. I've got a great teacher who manages weave together our different needs in weekly class, but your talk reminds me of how important it is for me to be learning ballet vocabularly, etc. on my own. Follow-along instructional videos like yours have been a huge help. Thanks!

Awesome, I'm so glad to hear that the reminder and the follow-along vocab videos are helpful! Happy dancing! :)

I REALLY ENJOY YOUR VIDEOS WHERE YOU READ YOUR OWN SCRIPT!
You’re speaking more slowly, and I feel calmer listening. You’re not repeating concepts. Also, you sound REALLY expressive! You’re a great reader and it sounds natural.
    This is very informative!

I'm 44 and excited about coming back to ballet. I did ballet briefly as a child, then took classes consistently from age 17 to 20ish where my teacher said she wish I had started at 7. Now I'm back but only a 45 min class one day a week. Julie, I'm so blessed to have found you and relieved by your desire to show adults that they can still dance. Thank you for your work!

Wow, I just commented about my own difficulty picking up and memorizing combos on a previous episode! I think you read my mind before your read my comment!

@@BrocheBallet I got to use some of those mental tricks this morning. ...hmmm, I'm not quite there yet but I didn't beat myself up over it! During the break, instead of stretching I stayed at the barre and tried to recall the more complex combos. The instructor doesn't mind if we set up our phones in a corner and record lessons for personal use but do you think that's helpful? I mean, we want to learn to hear it/spot it once or twice, then do it. Is watching it repeatedly on your phone good practice or simply fooling yourself?

@@uchidaoginome Practice makes progress, you'll get there! And now, at least you have a clear head about it to use the power of your brain to help you start to troubleshoot the combos!
It's definitely helpful to watch yourself on video and then you can also practice the combinations at home in slow motion to work out the nuances and transitions. Just be warned that watching yourself on video is another chance for our dear mind to beat ourselves up over how we look versus how it feels like we'd look. Here are some tips to watch yourself on video :) ua-cam.com/video/TjrKCQ2Gt-k/v-deo.html

I've returned to dance classes with a ballet technique class after a 5 year break. I'm amazed at how much my mind remembers that thinks my body remembers to...haha Great thoughts on how all this stuff works in the brain with adult beginners versus adult returners.

Yes, you have been talking about me .. now I know how to deal with my weaknesses. Come into adult ballet as a complete beginner, and fallen in love with this unique art form.
    Thanks Julie

Ballet is the ultimate trap -- it's SO hard, challenges us in every way possible -- and yet, we can't help ourselves but to continue!! It's such an incredible art form at developing our bodies and minds. So glad to be able to help you along your journey. Happy dancing!! :)

Omg I’m shocked about the “body dyslexia” and the anxiety that comes with it! It’s exactly how I’ve always felt. It makes me so sad because I always look so dumb and like I don’t know what I’m doing. Thus, I don’t get taken seriously especially because I take class with teens. 🙃 I have to say the steps out loud and confirm directions when it gets too complicated for me.

    • @BrocheBallet
      @BrocheBallet  3 роки тому +1

It's so common, you're not alone! (even though you might feel alone in your class of teens :) )
Practice as much as you can to help you feel more and more comfortable in class! I have so many breakdowns on my channel of the steps that we often mix up ... tombé pas de bourrée, which way to pirouette, balancé & waltz turn, the 8 body directions, glissade & petite allegro, and more!
You'll get there, keep practicing! :)
