About:
Based on T. S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, the show is set amongst a larger- than-life junkyard playground and is alive with our favourite feline characters including Rum Tum Tugger, Mr. Mistoffelees, Macavity, Jennyanydots, Old Deuteronomy, Grizabella and Skimbleshanks.
The Jellicle Cats come out to play on one special night of the year - the night of the Jellicle Ball. One by one they tell their stories for the amusement of Old Deuteronomy, their wise and benevolent leader, who must choose one of the Cats to ascend to The Heaviside Layer and be reborn into a whole new Jellicle life.

I just barely caught on that when Demeter starts running back and forth around 2:26, she is pushing all the other cats away from McCavity/Deuteronomy. I always thought it was just her freaking out. She and Munkstrap really are the most protective cats.
I’m pretty sure Demeter had a bad relationship with Macavity, so she’s able to sense him I suppose, but Demeter is like a mom friend of the clan ❤️
Thanks for pointing it out. I long since considered Demeter's story the most profound and it's entirely in the background. The Musical starts with her being skittish amd seeing Macavity in every shadow, it is her who flees from the headlights of thar car in the very first moment of the musical.
I am deeply convinced it is as you say, she was once deeply involved with Macavity and still hasn't shaken him, which is why she is the only one recognizing him in disguise. And Macavity truly isn't through with her either. But she overcomes her trauma as she sees the kittens are in danger and jumps on hid back like "OH NO YOU WON'T , NOT ON MY WATCH!" While fully knowing what awaits her. Macavity nearly manages to kidnap her again. Her found family comes to the rescue, just as she rescued them first. Her development is so interesting and deeply moving to watch.

And Alonzo, he's also one of the most protective, always shadowing Munkustrap or watching the goings-on from above, ready to jump in if needed - no wonder he's viewed as Munkustrap's second-in-command, guy needs more recognition imo

I mean, there's maybe a reason he's so completely terrified when he shows up after Skimble. Teazer is scared too, but she goes to hide in the crowd. Jerrie drops to the ground and can't move with terror. Something I really only noticed because Skimbleshanks was being Best Dad and protecting him and some others while trying to spot Teazer. Something happened there, why they're clearly not with him anymore. (which makes it extra great that he's the first one up after Alonzo gets knocked down, brave baby boy)

@@Tanyableu exactly! I had to look up the poem to even figure out who Gridlebone was. I think they cut Growltigers Last Stand due to the Siamese Cat pirates, which were considered offensive portrayals of Asians.
God, the POWER in this song is insane. The new movie doesn’t capture that feeling at all, which is disappointing
yeah, the movie tried to do everything backwards that made the play so good.
It went from a song warning the others about how cruel and awful he is, to a song singing his praises in the most literal sense. It also removed all of Demeter's importance to the story and almost erased her from the movie entirely.
And she whispered most of it. For some reason.

My favorite thing about the line “He’s outwardly respectable,” which implies that he does horrible deeds that heavily contrast his appearance, is that it’s followed by “I know he cheats at cards.” Like that’s supposedly the thing that contrasts his appearance most significantly.

You all really call this musical bad? This is a really fun, well produced, entertaining, awesome musical. That didn’t need to be remade, redone or reimagined in 2019. Keep it we already have it.
The 3 types of films made these days:
1. Sequels
2. Remakes of old movies
3. Remakes of classics, like musicals, Disney animations & books (Sherlock Holmes has been adapted 900 times I swear)

Music is catchy and dancing is good (though literally so many other musicals have just as great dancing) , but literally everything else is really dumb.

Just some little background if anyone is confused. Macavity is of course a criminal. He allegedly was apart of the Jellicle tribe before he began committing crimes. The reason why he went after Demeter is because they (might have) been mates, or he raped her at one point (You can find that note in the documentary of this film). Eventually, Demeter became paranoid to the point where she KNOWS what Macavity is planning. Munkustrap is the Jellicle protector, so he goes to save her. In this film, it's also implied that Munkus and Demeter are mates (it's interpreted different in different productions but I stand by DeMunku) which is another reason why he protected her.
Just to throw this out there, some people believe that Macavity is the eldest brother of Munkustrap and Tugger. It has been confirmed that Munkustrap and Tugger are Old Deuteronomy's sons.

poor demeter, she has so much trauma because of macavity, that one part where macavity grabs her and munkustrap struggles to not let her go, that explains why is she so terrified of everything
I love how Munkustrap was like "YOU'RE NOT TAKING MY WIFE!" and then Alonzo just comes along, grabs her and runs lol

Is she his "wife" yet? I think there are conflicting headcanons around concerning it, seeing how scittish she is. I think Munku knows better than to force anything she would not want. I love how they ALL come to her rescue.
But what I love most about this scene is the incredible bravery Demeter shows. She's scared of her own shadow ever since she escaped Macavity, but seeing how all other cats fall for it, she flipping jumps on his BACK, goes in direct physical contact with him to expose him, before anyone else can be hurt.
This scene right there is what makes Demeter my absolute favourite of the whole bunch. This sudden spark of "OH NO YOU WON'T!!" Yes, Mistoffelees brought Deutoronomy back, but she pushed all her fear aside, put her own life on the line to protect especially the kittens that were flocking around the fake in that moment.

Love the scenery when he appear. When we see Old Deutteronomy the music as well as the atmosphere is exactly like when he first appear, very calm, relaxing and reassuring. The lighting suggest something at best natural like the moonlight or at worst a simple blue-ish lamp.
When Demeter start having dought the atmosphere is exactly like how she feel, there's a lot of pause in the music as if the music itself was trying to reassure itself by trying to continue despite the obvious fact that something is bizarre about the situation. The very sudden calm become extremely suspicious and menacing. It's not a normal calm. It's a "calm before the storm" type of calm.
Also, that's when the attentive part of the audience would notice that old Deuteronomy walk is unusal, and the fact that he's not showing his face the audience to hide the mask make it even worse.
Then when Macavity (the storm) reveal himself the atmosphere drastically change to a super red-ish color, the music is never interrupted and is a disturbed version of the main theme, the tempo is much faster and everything is going way too fast (also, explosions everwhere motherfucker !). The atmosphere suggest a fire as well as his furr pattern. To sum up, this part of the song, this scene is in 3 part:
1) The reassuring calm, but we don't know yet that it's a fake calm.
2) The suspicious calm.
3) Straight up hellfire and brimstone. Macavity is the embodiment of evil, hes the only cat who's makeup was made to look like anything but a cat, from my point of view, this character is as if Sher-khan from the Jungle book and Kane (the wrestler) had a kid and gave it to Moriarty.
THIS is how you make such a cool and menacing villain, he had more impact in a single appearance than most of the characters in the first part of the musical before the intermission like Rumpus cat, Jennyanydots or Bustopher Jones. he was teased and described for an entire song yet when he finally appear, he's exactly how we imagined him but somehow even worse.

i owned a Macavity.... he was nice to the family, but any cat, or dog on a leash got his wrath.... he was straight up old school mob boss. Every other cat was submissive, the dogs walked past with their heads on a swivel. You could tell he believed this world was his and he was just letting the rest of us live in it.

I DO love how the song lyrics CLEARLY state that Macavity is a GINGER cat....whose tall and thin as a rake.....and in the new movie, we get Idris Elba (who IS a good actor in his own right) but in the scene where Taylor Swift stumbles through this song (and didn't do it NEARLY as well as these two), we see Macavity WITHOUT his fur coat and hat and it looks like Idris Elba told whoever was in charge of doing the cat fur "I ain't looking like the Macavity in the other one. Make my fur the exact same color as my skin and give me flashing green eyes and we'll call it a day" and he shows up all brown and brawny and magics Judy Dench away. lol
Don’t blame the actors. They don’t choose what color their fur is or who they’re supposed to sing a song with. Blame the director.

This is probably one of the best female duets in theater. Their voices so wonderful. So many times you have a soprano duet whistling out their high notes. But this is just pure raw voice. Even the chorus of females, its all their chest voices. Spectacular

I'm gonna say what everyone is thinking. Taylor Swift is _not_ going to be able to pull off Bomba.
To be 100 percent honest, I think Taylor did okay, not perfect or exactly like the actress here, not brilliant, but okay. Her scene in the movie was the only part that I kinda enjoyed watching.
I try not to blame the actors. The movie script screwed up everything that the musical was great at. There probably wasnt much Taylor could honestly do

This version of Macvity is so much better than the 2019 version. I mean they shouldn't have made another movie of CATs. Because if it isnt broken don't fix it.

Can someone explain why griddlebone works for Macavity?
She might have led to the demise of her suitor (growltiger) in growltiger's last stand, so she is seen as a rather bad cat. She is also too vain for the tribe and that is why she was kicked out. Growltiger's last stand was not shown in the film, it was cut for time, but a wonderfull part of the show.

Cant answer Griddlebone. But my theroy about Munkstrap is that when he was young he didn't quite understand what was going on with Macavity so he started stealing stuff for him. So technically hes "worked for him"

Munkustrap is a good guy. I felt sorry for him when Macavity defeated him. I kind of see Munkustrap as the sheriff in the story.

When I was a kid I loved this musical.. but missed all the sexual innuendos 🙄 still like the choreography. If all humans could be as flexible then we would all commit crimes.

OMG, SAME!! Well, I really caught a few, I was like 11-12 when I saw this movie ( this hands down there, ladies! ¬¬, or the Victoria mating scene with...Plato, was?), but now, watching again with 24 is like "OMG, this musical is full of them! o_o". Still my favourite danced-musical by far :D

At a talent show in high school i did this poem and i got a standing ovation as well as someone saying that it was no surprise that i would do a poem based on cats as i am a avid cat lover. I also did a few years later did the Midnight ride of Paul Revere. This poem was for me the easiest one as i could somehow just get into the method acting of Macavity the Mystery Cat as i channeled my cat sassy who was a little terror
