The wildest bike at Unbound Gravel: Chase Wark's modified Lauf Seigla

  • Unbound Gravel sends many riders down rabbitholes of tech speculation as to how to traverse 200 treacherous miles of Kansas gravel safety, quickly, and as efficiently as possible. Chase Wark takes it to another level, though.
Chase is one of 60 competitors in the $250,000 Life Time Grand Prix, of which Unbound Gravel is the marquee event.
I caught up with Chase on the plains of Kansas - not too far from Chase County - and asked him about his heavily modified Lauf Seigla.
Thanks to Richard Pool for the fun thumbnail pic - and for suffering my antics all morning.

One point in Dylan's video is that they found canting the hoods inwards like that to be slower, since it kicks your elbows out. All this stuff looks good but really needs to be tested to see how much faster it is.
I do think the bladder/fairing would help Dylan though...

Any mechanical engineer will tell you that a spring without damping makes a terrible suspension. Gravelers think Lauf leaf springs are the coolest, but It is just wasting energy wobbling up and down, or making the vibrations worse at certain frequencies. I’m not convinced the rear disk is doing what he thinks it’s doing because his legs and torso definitely upset the air.
Also, his front “aero” bladder is stuck in the middle of a bunch of other things upsetting airflow.
He’s missing an opportunity to make his stomach and chest aerodynamically smoother by carrying water there.

I think this looks fine, and makes a lot of sense. I run a top tube and frame bike on my Warbird all the time, just for convenience. Why not have the storage capacity, and then use it to make the bike faster as well? Cars have gotten more cupholders and cubbies over the years, just for practicality, why not bikes?

Berd spokes weigh 2.5 grams per spoke. Sapim CX Ray spokes weigh 4.25 grams per spoke. Difference is 1.75 grams per spoke - or total weight savings of 42 grams on a 24 spoke wheel. My guess is that the increased aerodynamic drag of Berd spokes negates any weight savings, with the sole advantage being increased compliance if that is even noticeable with Lauf fork and 2.2 tire.

If you actually do the math its more like wheel weight is 1.2x worse than other weight, and only when accelerating hard. 42grams of spokes wouldn't even save you 1 watt in a 1,500 watt sprint, and you will lose more than that to aero drag.

In 1964 peter post did paris roubaix averaging 45.2 km/hr
Mvdp did it last year at 47.8
    Both had a strong tailwind
The reason why the material is subjected, is because no one will race a 60ties bike now, and no one could race a recent bike in the sixties.
So overall that is not what makes the difference, and why its called marginal gains.
