He got wrong one thing, the olympic games were shut down because they were seen as pagan (as christianity was on the rise) not because of being seen as greek.
@@JohnAndJohner We are talking about the 4th century here. Greece had been roman for 6 centuries at that point and had by that time had adopted a roman identity. And the olympic games had been open to people from all the empire for most of that time. The closure was part of Theodosius strikes on pagan stuff, which also affected lots of ancient institutions from the city of Rome itself.
I'm pretty disappointed Jon went for something minor like the Olympians. We all know the most influential Greek city-state was Argos, which invented chaining little pens to a table and selling cheap tat.
Really appreciate you breaking away from the standard factions with more well-known history. I watch your grand strategy content for the actual history as much as anything
It really is! But did Jon ever breathe during that video? 😂 He talks faster the more he gets excited... And I've rarely seen such a breathless video as this one
*sees John playing more imperator Rome* well what do we have here? John: Guess what! Without this little spit of nothing! We wouldn't have indoor plumbing! Me: aw John, that's real sweet.
It's like a history lecture, but the professor's map is incredibly detailed and interactive. And then instead of actually teaching me accurate history after the events, the professor teaches me a fanfiction that he made about Elis talking over the world.
I have enjoyed many of your series to date; but, I must say the depth of knowledge you are sharing with this series is truly fascinating. I am utterly captivated by this series. More please!
Greatings from Greece, great video mate. Btw I am half Macedonian from Pella, from my father's side and half from Elis from Olympia, from my mother's side.
Never heard of this game before. UA-cam actually recommended something I very much want to watch for once. The way you talk about history reminds me of Adrian Goldsworthy and Mike Loades. Subscribed, can't wait to watch more :)
Came to watch a historical video game let's play, and got a great surprise of insightful historical analysis on how culture and national identity works. That was really cool and takes some understanding and study of some things other than a 30 minute survey of the historical high points during this era. "Liked" the video, which I don't often do.
Jon, Korinth is owned by Macedon and occupied by Aigion. You can't have that off Aigion in a war. Also, Thrace would be siege leader for Patrai and they'd probably give the occupation over to Macedon if they won the siege. I assume it is too late and the next episode is already recorded but I think you are about to make a few mistakes.
Seems first DLC has to be a diplomacy DLC. This game, even though it's not a Total War, seems to focus exclusively on war on progress. Unlike say CK2. Also, despite Jon, it lacks the kinda personality touch that CK2 and even Rome TW have. So far it's a pure numbers game. And i think it's more complicated than complex. It generally feels like a lot like some of best of pieces from Stellaris, CK2 and so on but isolated and with a lack of depth to all of them.... I wonder, how they can possibly fix this. and what it will cost.
@Kyle Vernon Those games have only serious content after several DLC. Especially EU4. Hoi4 locks important features in otherwise pretty useless dlc. And this game here feels like bits and pieces from other Paradox game that seriously lack depth. Numbers and characters. I've seen Jon play CK2 and it feels very differently to a plain number game. Even Total War does. I doubt he can do it with this one. It will be army sizes and dice rolls all the way down. Oh and isorrowproductions just played EU4 without any dlc. Interesting video.
Great video for what looks like a great new game. Immediately subscribed! Can’t wait to see more, really looking forward to getting into this series and this game! Thanks.
iam greek and sure i learned from this video!!thanks Jon for the the game and as a greek person thanks for the history lesson! usually i dont like games like that, that i cant play the battle by my self ( like in total war) but this is very nice game i would say!!! you cant play the battle but it has so many politics and other stuff to do! it has a lot of factions to play and that is great!
Lots of misinformation too in odyssey. Mainly because the director is political correctness in history muh. Especially about women in war/gay people in society. But its okay i guess.
BlackStar Nae actually the Greeks were actually (sort of) ok with homosexuality...not to the level that odyssey implies but it also wasn’t condemned like a lot of places...plus women did fight in Ancient Greece (again not to the level of odyssey but it still existed) Long story short while the game isn’t super accurate it’s not as inaccurate as you might think (although I fully admit that this was unintentional accuracy since like you said that stuff was only put in for pc reasons)
It's funny when you picture the diplomats in this game, they go off to tell another leader that we own what they have, leave his court to return with the good news; only to return a few weeks later and say "oh by the way we are at war, forgot to tell you"
Absolutely loving your series and history lessons jon! You probably already recorded the next episode, but couldn't you just go for war with messene? sparta would help them, but they have barely any troops. You could take them AND sparta at the same time!
I have to say that, being an avid player of Paradox grand strategy games, I want too excited about this game. That's why it took me so long to start watching this series. But after watching this, I think I really need to get it and play it! This looks like exactly what I wanted for Victoria 3. It's not the Victorian era but I can live with that 😄
Hey great job! Can't wait for the next episode. Could you please consider attacking the south? Just built more troops and that's it. You will get Sparta too because they had some losses due to the war they have.
Love your videos, but the Elian calendar was only one of many used in the Greek world, and the Romans got rid of the olympics because of tide of anti-pagan persecutions and crackdowns conducted to solidify Christianity, not because of it being a symbol for a pan-Hellenic identity.
Just a couple of points in regards to the introduction: With respect to Elis' control of the games, in the first couple of centuries after the games' traditional foundation, it's not fully clear who was in control; Elis obviously took control later, but the earlier history tends to be cloudier. More interestingly, pan-Hellenism is a concept that's usually thought to gather steam only in the fifth century, in response to the Persian invasions, rather than something that existed beforehand which facilitated Greek victory (bear in mind the number of Greek states which medised). Interestingly, I believe that it's in this period that aetiologies of the games themselves start developing along pan-Hellenic lines.
The Huffmanator Nah, they all do, to some degree. The sharp division between history on the one side and classics on the other doesn’t really exist any more, if it ever did. Still, this is really beside the point: I was just making a couple of corrections.
