  • We need to eat to survive but
eating is a huge sensory experience involving most of our senses in some way.
It's not a surprise then that some autistic people find eating hard!
    Senses:
Touch through the food's texture and consistency.
Sight through its colour and its shape.
Taste if it's spicy, strong, or a mixture.
Smell to tell whether it's bland or flavourful.
Our proprioceptive sense allows us to feel our muscles when biting and chewing.
Our internal, interoceptive sense tells us when we're hungry or when we're bloated.
Eating also involves our senses of temperature and nociception, our sense of pain.

I’m diagnosed with Aspergers. I’ve never liked much more than 3-5 foods at a time. Btw this is a great video. Very underrated!

I enjoy the taste of food but it’s always such a task to sit down and eat it, but I can’t stop part way through because I can’t come back and eat cold food, but I also can’t leave it unfinished.

I usually have to finish something if it’s on my plate... even if I’m full already

it hurts to see your mom cook but you cant handle eating it bc of the taste and texture.

As an adult, it’s not even the taste, texture, smell etc. for me it’s also everything surrounding it. Going to the grocery store can be a huge task, I usually have to set aside an entire day for it. I tend to cook and buy the exact same few things over and over again. At restaurants, Ill almost always order a burger and fries, just because I know I’ll always eat the whole thing.

My stomach almost always hurts in one way or another after eating processed foods. I have a lot of digestive sensitivity to processed and canned food. I have no problem with whole and raw foods though.

I believe some people take digestive enzymes with food to help. There's also things like food marble that are meant to tell you what's in the food you're not digesting.
Food is an annoying one and I get issues too.

As a small child, I would not eat Biscuits if they were broken from the packet. My Mother would laugh and say "don't be silly, they will break when you eat them." One of my earliest childhood memories.

This explains so much about my aversion to ground beef , fish, soup, and certain vegetables. They're either tasteless, have an abrasive texture, or have overwelming smell.

I'm sure there are positives also. Think of what you enjoy in life. All the best. I ate from a bin as a child, having the luxury of being fussy would have been nice.

I am an extremely picky eater but I like to eat some pretty strange things that no sane person would even try.
