I love how people that don’t learn comment something stupid like these guys , how about you actually get into jiu jitsu and get your head out of your little mentality
"Put yourself in stressful situations with the purpose of learning." One of the great gifts of lead climbing, on trad gear. Detach from the stress or fear and do it anyways.
Tried that in the past. Realized that there's consequences that I had to deal with and stopped. What,, you think after having sex with a girl, she'll magically disappear and you can go on doing what you're doing? She's going to stick around. And you now have to treat her right about every day of the year. Not that I went that far, I gave up girls because it's a pain for people who don't want to deal with it.
So jocko reminds me of my father. My dad was a banker. Not skilled in combat. Out of shape. Ect. What reminds me of my father is his incredible knowledge of leadership. My dad took a common sense down and dirty approach to life. He did what worked and he was a great leader/ manager of people. And I get reminded of that everytime I watch this podcast. So thank you for that.
Exactly what i learned in boxing- push yourself to accomplish in intentional stressful situations, and use that accomplishment in other avenues of life- brilliant advice overall!
Thank you Jocko! You taught one of the best things I have learned at University. As a business major, we always learned and had It drilled in our head that every situation depends. It is your humble approach that matters.
Zen meditation does wonders. It teaches clarity, commitment, and concentration, and, for me at least, quiets the cacophony and chaos outside before it becomes cacophony and chaos within. Jocko, I recommend Eugene Herrigil's book "Zen and the Art of Archery" as an adjunct to your study of archery.
Love this. Been wanting some validation for this context of experience for a good bit. Fail in practice, so you dont have to in a real-life scenario. Well said gentlemen 👏👏👏
Echo saying “seeing it one time is a way bigger difference than never seeing it”. Totally agree. In a management position I’ve come across situations and been like “how do I assess this?”, then the next time I use that experience and build off of it. I tell my subordinates that you won’t truly know what to do until you’ve dealt with a situation at least once.
This also points to the importance of observation, because the quality of your potential actions is related to the quality of your observations of the situation.
Stressful situations make me focus more, my awareness seems heightened. It can be a good thing but bad when an employer finds out, since I find myself getting last minute jobs all the time.
I picked up archery couple of years ago I'm very proficient with a rudimentary bow but buy a small Target that will give you stress and you will learn to deal with it. Set it up in your backyard there is no missing the target especially in an urban setting stress you can learn to deal with it that way for sure
How do you deal with stress if it is your home life and you dont have any real external support when you get to that point of wanting to "snap"? How do you keep yourself in "check"?
I wish I had the money to hire you for a few days Jocko.. I need some major help. I am trying to get my daily discipline down. its my first priority. which includes working out.
FancyShoesVlogs - I m 56, starting 5th round of chemo Monday. On Jan 21 I ll recognize working out daily for 40 years, documented. I dream about running, skiing, riding, backpacking and lifting. 89 lift days in 2018... before I started treatment in October. And u r not motivated. Just start. Your life could change today... and the choice could be taken away today.
F*** I get on a roll making nothing but good decisions feeling great working out but that devil voice in my head always comes back which leads to one bad decision and it's pretty much the Snowball Effect I'll never let it hold me down but definitely counterproductive hardest fight of my life but I will never give up
Hey. When u feel like ur being held down by higher ups. What kind of tact can i use to get the opportunity. .....my thinking is. If i tactfully exspress i feel this way and passivly back him against the wall. With out him making it obviously im not getting the deserved oppurtunity. Because im worth to much somewhere else. But this else where is not my goal. I work in a fab shop. Been stuck in commercial duct. Want to do industrial fabricating.
In order to fully understand the outcomes of important decisions where do you feel the best place to acquire the education is? I have trouble with finding the correct source. Help.
A male role model like this is priceless to a young man. Wish i'd had advice like this growing up, i'd own the planet by now and everyone would happily be doing my bidding.
I would give the asshole answer that probably you should not be taking the leadership role then. Or at least get an assistant that is really good at that, like a computer style analytical person (contrary to the stereotype, most of us analytical types can think just as well on our feet). Personally I am that and I have the opposite problem; not exactly analysis paralysis but the mental noise can obscure the events of the moment. I dunno. I am a strong believer in leadership teams ~ delegating leadership partially into who you are leading. You want the logical, thinker, etc, but also 'the mom' ~ morale booster, etc.
It's amazing to consider how a group of people with all the information and long analysis can still make terrible decision. For instance during the first world war the construction of the Maginot line supposed to stop the german invasion, while the german just got around it. Well if group of intelligent people can make this king of mistake, imagine the magnitude of the mistake you can make by yourself.
Yo guys, I need some help from you with a big decision. You're a tight community and I hope you can help me.. After a month of waiting I have decided to break up with my girlfriend, but I'm still afraid of her reaction and how I'll get by afterwards. I'm mainly afraid of the feeling of guilt and regret etc, even though I've thought about this decision for a long time. Sorry if this is a bit outside of the topic, but I really like the Jocko community and appreciate any advice for how to get by and stay on the path. Even if it's just a "don't be a b*tch". Anything's appreciated. Thanks guys
@@garythegastropod1823 did you hear about Trump telling people to inject sanitiser into their bodies or drink it? That's not exactly what I would call smart.
“You have to learn to detatch” I see a dichotomy here: how do you detatch and yet also exercise ownership? My answer: own the learning process. Whats yours?
I think it's that you detach in the sense of trying to get that 'big picture' view of the situation, in order to not get overwhelmed by your stress, fears, and anxieties. I don't think detachment and ownership are mutually exclusive, in fact, detaching would probably help you better take ownership, I think. If you're not detached, if you're only worrying about the things that can go wrong, the consequences of failure, you're too in your own head to be able to deal with things effectively. But if you detach from your worries, it allows you to calm down, think clearly, and act in a way that is best for you and everyone around you, thereby taking ownership of the situation.
I love Jocko, but that’s his first answer for everything:
Q: how do I become a better piano player?
Jocko: learn jujitsu
and it's true. same principle: consistent training. doesn't matter what you do
