I think dealing with the anxiety around decision making comes down to admitting that there is a maximally correct decision, but you cannot know what it is. The choices you make define you, so just decide who you want to be and if you in good faith make decisions towards that goal then that's it, man. Gotta wade through the mire, climb up into the lair and slay the dragon, roughly speaking.

I know what you mean 😂 but I do think Dr. Peterson asks those kinds of questions as earnestly as he can. He wants to further understand things and people so he invites these guests onto his show partly because he wants to explore ideas and expand his own thinking. Not to mention he himself is a very, genuinely curious person. As such, Dr. Peterson doesn’t mean any disrespect despite the clip indicating he did

My guess is that in some way it's because Joe Hage's successful path has come from somewhat different principles than what Dr. Peterson teaches. And it's as if, for example, Dr. Peterson is trying to figure out how this chronic procrastinator is able to be high achieving and successful.

There's a hypothesis here I would like to challenge, to the effect that chaos tolerance is a learnt ability. I love chaos and thinking on my feet, but I was never taught that as a child. I was kept in a very choiceless and controlled environment and wasn't encouraged to believe I could make good decisions or handle the world (quite the reverse, I was deemed incompetent and stupid). I think, at least in my case, my love of chaos is temperamental. I always enjoyed the thrill of the stress that comes with uncertainty and I get bored when everything goes according to plan. My baseline is being bored, so maybe it could account for that. Even as a kid, I enjoyed doing presentations in front of the class, not because I wasn't scared, I was a shy kid and I was terrified, but because at least I wasn't bored half to death.

I literally can not relate not one bit
There was a time when I was lost and in the eye of the storm, I lived in chaos long enough before I started getting my life together and put things back in order, but still the time I spent in chaos way longer, and I know how does it feel and I can never in my life say that it was enjoyable to me
I really can't relate to that
And it is really interesting how is that the norm for you, I guess humans are really fascinating creatures after all

I thought it was just be who got bored easily and seem to like chaos better at times… problem is when you start getting stuck in chaos for longer than intended… then that’s no fun any more… So, I am learning to morph the way of getting into chaos better by having a positive outcome such as diverging it into something optimistically challenging benefiting such as traveling or doing a bigger life project or the likes rather than going down hill just to kill boredom… the 1st chaos type was mainly subconscious induced and 2nd one is conscious induced I would say. Perhaps the love for chaos is just evolutionarily adaptive method in us beings I think.

I think there's something to be said about having your options narrowed because it makes the thought process much less complicated. If you have too much choice, you're probably bound to buyer's remorse when you do make a decision because you're gonna constantly be trying to retrace your steps to determine if the decision you made was maximally beneficial.

Procrastinating down to the wire can also bring about opportunity to witness others reactions. Those who can influence a particular decision may be holding out till the last minute before reaching deeper into their pocketbook. Kenny Roger’s “The Gambler” may be this guys lifelong theme song.

Procrastination can also be valuable because, while you're procrastinating, other options may become available. I'm not convinced this is always or often a good strategy, but it is a possibility. When procrastination is the least bad option, that's the silver lining for which to hope.

    But it goes deeper still:
It's not just a question of what you choose our when you choose it, but also why do you feel as though you have to choose in the first place?
A coin flip would reduce the anxiety and uncertainty down to 0.
And in many ways, if we spend weeks overthinking multiple choices what ends up happening is that when the time comes to finally make the decision, we make a snap judgement. And we are never certain no matter how long we thought things through. Because certainty is not a product of good decision making, but of trust. Not of choosing right over wrong, but proving your choice right after the fact.
We never do have control over our lives; but we can have control over ourselves and our attitudes towards life.
There are no good outcomes in life, only good actions taken to unknown outcomes.

    • @Nicoladen1
      @Nicoladen1 6 місяців тому

@@israeladekoya3839 The inevitable realization that any choice we make is based on our Limited life experiences and our own limited persona. We're born in a time we didn't pick, to a family we couldn't choose. We're taught who we are, how to act and think, what other people think and feel. How to live in society. But we're never taught why. Why is everything the way that it is? Why are my parents like this and not like those other parents? Why did I grow up with this name and personality and world-view? Did I ever consciously choose these exact circumstances? Let's say I started reflecting on my own thoughts and feelings and views and I realize that they're not truly mine, but they're an amalgamation of specific experiences judged by a specific mind, both of which I never chose. So the very first step to not only becoming your own person, but also to growing and maturing beyond that limited palette we took for granted, that very first step is to question it. Realize it has no right to be absolute. My name could've been different, my upbringing could've been very different. The outcome would've been a different person, yet it would still be me. As such I am neither my name nor my character nor my point of view. Those I have acquired. And since it is all those things that are thinking my every thought, judging my every experience and making my every choice... Why should I trust that to make choices for me? It would be much wiser to first question the mechanism that makes the choices. It would be wise to strive for wisdom as to be better equipped to actually make "the right" choice. And when one goes down this route, one comes to realize that all choices are based on principles. We may expand on - and refine - those principles as we grow older. But we will never be without. We will always have to make choices, and we will always progress towards a more developed and individual standpoint as we grow older. But nevertheless, unless we question the why, the what holds no meaning.
Unless I question why I picked art school over Carpentry it doesn't matter which of the two I ended up choosing. Because the choice didn't matter. It was not formulated by me, it was given to me by a past I didn't choose. And ontop of that, that very past has instilled in me an urge to choose not only quickly but also to pick based on societal expectations. I am pressured into picking between a few predetermined options. That can never be fulfilling or enlightening. We're like robots, programmed during childhood, running amok during adulthood.
Nostalgia is the reminder of a time before said compulsion. When life was still life. Not a compulsive sequence of choice and regret and worry and suffering. Why do I suffer if I myself have not done anything but exist as me? Life must be suffering.
Or perhaps, a life that is not free, a life that solely revolves around living out and pleasing a made-up persona, perhaps that is suffering. So why keep this cycle alive? Because I already suffer?
Because it's not my fault that I suffer?
Blame only postpones taking responsibility. I can blame everything for my suffering. Or I can take responsibility and realize that I, this complex organism, have created a personality, an identity, a cluster of behaviors and ideas that I will keep living out because I fear that without it I am nothing.
Yet all that is what you've been given, it's not you. Inspect, understand, learn. Question.
Don't strive for happiness, strive for truth.
If that was too cryptic just read about Buddhism, Zen, Hindiusm etc. They hold a lot of wisdom. Because while we were bhsy inspecting the outside and manipulating matter, they've been busy inspecting inside and manipulating their own selves. That is true self-control. That is true freedom

The right decision is the one that is right AT THE TIME, based on a careful review of all information AT THAT TIME. If after the passage of events it turns out that another option was better, then you follow the Stoics in understanding that you cannot control most things which are external to your mind including future events , and acceptance rather than regret is the rational response.

You start deciding when the issue or opportunity arises you never leave it to the last minute, that doesn’t mean you should dwell on it forever either but it is important to really take your time when making a decision that can impact your life in a positive or negative way the first thing you need to ask yourself is does this option benefit me in the long run, is this option going to help me reach my goals and help me reach my dream life. Even though it may seem difficult or painful at the time it’s a case of short term pleasures for long term pain or short term pain for long term pleasure. Take working out for example your brain is like hell no we are going to stay right here in the comfort zone going against that you are going to encounter resistance sure it will be less painful and uncomfortable staying at home, but is that going to benefit you in the long term and is it going to help you reach your goal? For most people it won’t being overweight is a serious health issue and can also affect your mental health and in some cases it can even end your life before you even reach your goal, I believe that the pro’s outweigh the cons in this decision making. As Andrew says always make the best chest move in life and he is right making good decisions usually end in good results.

That's the first time I've ever heard a person express exactly how I feel about operating in chaotic environments. Order is fine, but it lacks the potential for true heroic greatness, in my opinion. War is hell, and despite that, I thrived as a soldier. Now I live in the wilderness with a solar setup and a satellite dish to keep track of what the rest of ya'll are up to; mostly insane things. The Kingdom is laid out before you, but you do not see it because it doesn't look like the world you are familiar with. Do not fear what lies beyond the boundaries of your world, for everything you need is there and within you; for your heavenly Father knows your needs and has provided for them. Be free, follow His Commandments to Abraham, and seek the Truth your earthly father has hidden to keep you in service to his dying house.

What Is the Difference Between God and Nature?
“It is best for us to agree and accept the words of the Kabbalists that ‘the nature’ (Heb. ‘HaTeva’ [‘הטבע’]) has the same numerical value as ‘God’ (Heb. ‘Elohim’ [‘אלהים’]-eighty-six. Then, I will be able to call the laws of God ‘nature’s commandments [Mitzvot],’ or vice-versa (God’s commandments [Mitzvot] by the name ‘nature’s laws’), for they are one and the same.” - Kabbalist Yehuda Ashlag (Baal HaSulam), “The Peace.”
There is nothing besides the system of nature, which Kabbalists equally refer to as “nature” or “God,” and we are integral parts of this system.
Therefore, when we say that there is one God, it means that there is nothing besides one force acting in this single system we are parts of.
The desire of the single force acting in reality is to bring us into connection with it-not via coercion, but through awareness in a positive manner.
As much as we understand, feel and attain this force as one that is good and benevolent, then we can adhere to it and reach its level of complete awareness.

This conversation is basic and nuts. Everyone to their own however, this is bad decision making. The right time to make the decision is when confronted with the options, reviewed and thought out. I sure wouldn't want to share a foxhole with this guy. I'm surprised that Jordan tried to give this conversation a lifeline. Disappointing.

@Sir Woof Woof the third, Earl of woofington well, Sir Woof, I think I have not heard the use of the words, "(no disrespect meant)" used with less sincerity than has been used by you, my good man, in responding to my comment - no disrespect meant Sir Woolf. I humbly made the initial comment to say, cloaked in gentile terms, that anyone who has the resources to purchase 2 tickets to different locations - such as described by Jordan's guest - and arriving at the airport with yet a sincere quandary as to which location to choose, has way too many resources and in my, once again, humble opinion - needs to be monitored closely so as not to hurt themselves or others. Again, no disrespect meant. Many thanks, Sir Woof. BTW, 2 questions: Did you read my comment carefully? And, where on or in God's green earth did you get the name Sir Woof Woof the Thirdly? Lord, now I've confused myself. I'll have to go back and read the whole thing more carefully.

@@michaelvrchota4089 This is the most unhinged response to a light jab I've seen in a while. "This person has too many resources and NEEDS TO BE CAREFULLY MONITORED to *huge leap* MAKE SURE THEY DON'T HARM ANYONE ELSE", brother, you're telling me having resources and options and not knowing what to pick makes someone else an existential threat to others?? Unless you're really gonna commit to a top down control model where someone gets to dictate what's "safe/acceptable" for everyone, which is impossible because everyone is an individual and different regions and cultures value different things, which would be telling, I'd say that you didn't think that through and got triggered. I know we're both being a bit autistic here but chill out a bit.

@@chrisdrinkerofhate2 You gotta be kidding me, right? Given the circumstances of this particular person (the interviewee) who loves Chaos and the Title of the piece, "How to Make the Right Decision" the gravity of the decision seems to be ordered into the class of Make a Decision before you go and buy 2 airline tickets to 2 different locations. And, certainly having failed the first decision exercise - make a decision well before you get to the airport! I do not dictate this model for all. However, it does seem reasonable as "safe/acceptable" for the group - albeit I do not have any confirmed documentation to prove my statement. It just seems like common sense to have these aforementioned items decided even before you purchase your airline tickets. I think you use your ability to over-think the situation and dive deep into something that does not require anything anywhere near a deep dive. I would also counter that you Chris, might be the one to "Chill Out" my friend (?). Finally, you suggest we might be both acting out is some Autistic pattern. As best I can tell, I have no developmental disability caused by differences in my brain. I'm not sure about you. You may have different ways of learning, moving or paying attention. Again, I can't be sure of that in your case. All the best.
