True and you cannot rewrite history. Do not forget that a large number of slaves were sold by their fellow beings for profit. The Chinese are writing Tianmen square out of history. The statues should be there for all to discuss and learn from thr past.

It's regrettable to say, but the recent response to the incident that happened in the U.S. is way over the top and is having a negative effect on the way that black people are viewed in this country. Peaceful protests would have been fine and could have upheld social distancing but the riots in London are not having a positive effect as far as race relations go. All the fuss that has been made about every little thing that is remotely (even extremely remotely) 'perceived' as 'racist' is completely out of balance and over-blown. Race relations have been set back 20 years. A fortnight ago everything to do with BLM was just ticking over and things were slowly turning in favour of the bame community but now, with the riots, I think it's a case of ''no steps forward, ten steps back''..

The removal of statues, paintings, artworks, books, etc, because they offend some people is a currently contentious issue. We live in a democracy. A vocal minority should not dictate how a society should reward it's past heroes. The decision should be democratic.
Here is a simple way of achieving this -
Any citizen should be able to start a petition on their local government website to, for example, remove a particular statue. If and when the petition achieves more than 50% of the local constituents, then it should be removed. If it does not achieve more than 50% than the statue should remain, and the petition taken down after a stated period, (say 3 months).

This is ironic, we run out of problems to a level we start thinking in a statue. Well, there is a statue for good and statue for bad, and people could have a different opinion on the same character. There are people who love him and group who hate him, the only right thing to do is to write under the statue both view. this is history. and mean nothings if we remove it or keep it, as well the history will document our position today for years to come. Even Prophets like Jesus some people think he is the symbol of goodness. other seen his fake and violated the law and deserve to die. Therefore, this is a silly problem, and we are not so trivial to this level to discuss statue.

Statue of Robert Baden Powell (scout) in Poole.
Robert Powell sympathetic to Hitler, writing in his diary of 1939: “Lay up all day. Read Mein Kampf.
"A wonderful book, with good ideas on education, health, propaganda, organisation etc.”
He was an early admirer of Italian fascist Benito Mussolini.
It's hard to defend Robert when he had such people as ideals.
In addition, when you add the occupation and slavery by occupant British Empire, there is no defense for this "scout hero". There is clearly a lack of knowledge of the history of people who defend the person of R. Powell. It is possible that they suggest that he did a lot for the scout movement, etc. and all knowledge ends here.
It's true history ! Is not matter if you like or not ...sorry .

I am an engineer and working as an engineer but they are looking at me that I am lying. I am finding this rather amusing how they process these facts in their heads. I think it is very difficult for them to comprehend the differences between what they were taught about their big empire and loved believing it and what the reality is actually. But I still think if any nation the British is the one who can rethink and reconsider in a wider scale even if it is tough on them.

How about pulling the pyramids in Egypt down, the temple of Apollo in Greece oh let's not forget the colloseum in rome, anything historically offensive. These are historical statues and monuments and if we are educated about them then this is so much better than erasing them, to learn about history is to not repeat it and if Edward colstan had a statue erected in Bristol then he must have been a significant part of the history of that city and if it's now deemed he was a bad man then let's educate the kids about why he was a bad man, what the culture back then was like and why it's much better now and must never be repeated...if a democratic vote is made to remove it then move it but mobs of people toppling statues in the street reminiscent of the toppling of saddhams statue in Iraq is just not on...also time is relevant also, because for instance the Berlin wall,Saddam these are monuments of things that happened very recently and people who suffered under these people, Hitler statues etc, people are still alive and there is real direct offence that can be taken here if a statue or monument is made and erected long before your grandparents have died and there's no one alive that has suffered directly through experience or family members then the answer then is education because I'd history offends then where does all this erasing of historical architecture/sculpture/art end? It's a very complex issue and to allow mob rule and destruction of things in towns and cities is not good.
