I was listening to Steppenwolf's Magic Carpet Ride today and thought that would be a great "Songs that changed the world." I'd love to know everything that went into that classic!
The saturation tip was good to hear. Awhile back someone mentioned putting a saturation plugin on the rhythm guitars mix bus and I couldn't understand why. I added just a touch of Soundtoys Decapitator and was surprised at the results.
I respectfully disagree. If you have a tile floor, you're going to get a chamber reverb effect spilling back into the SM57, even if the mic is right on the grille. Also, if you have your cab in a boomy room, or the cab is resonating the floor, you'll hear that in the mic. A little bit of room treatment and decoupling (Auralex Gramma Pad works amazing) tightens everything up phenomenally well in my experience. Thanks for all the great production info as always!
The first question had three answers: 1) if you don’t know what you’re doing then do that and keep doing it until you do know! 2) test all your microphones by pointing them away from sound sources and at different angles to give you an idea of just how much they miss (or otherwise!?) Of what they’re not pointed at 3) if you like the sound then it doesn’t matter how you got the sound it is your sound👍
I’ve been going through vinyl that’s stored in my attic and came across “The Crazy World of Arthur Brown” which is very playable, the whole album is well produced. When the track “Fire” came up it blew my mind once again. I think Warren should consider this as another Music that changed the World. Never quite got over that record!
In my experience recording at home in a small apartment, I seem to get a lot of bass build-up between 100 Hz and 200 Hz, so much in fact, that my DSL20 with a 1x12 with bass on 1 is bassier than a DSL40 with bass on 7. I have conducted these experiments over and over, and each time came to the same conclusion that it must be the room that is causing the low end build up and cloudy low end in my recordings with just an SM57, regardless of how close or far the mic is from the grille.
The room absolutely can affect the sound of the close mics. Reason being is that the cabinet itself will resonate differently depending on the amount of space the sound has to disperse into.
Absolutely! IF the room is very extreme indeed! However, a normal bedroom for instance (like the question is referring too) would quite likely be less lively than most drum rooms I’ve worked in!

If you have the mic against the grille, you will not hear reverb, because the reverb is coming from many times the distance between mic and speaker. Double distance = 1/2 (half)SPL (volume for non-scientific folks). Halve the distance = 2x volume. In this case, compared to the position of the mic, it is an almost infinite distance. Hence, no verb. And yes. LISSUN (listen) instead of going by numbers...
To the person asking about tricks to add depth and excitement to some stonery guitars, try adding a stereo cab IR to your rhythm guitar bus. Oh, I know this probably goes against everything correct! lol But stoner guitars are best when incorrect. I've had good results using Mikko Cab, one that you can easily pick and choose a cab and mic and drag the mic around to taste or distaste....ymmv and it definitely depends on the source material, but it can bring some 420 snarl to the git-fiddles.

I’m looking into buying/building various sized sound traps to make the room flat responsive overall, to mix with my monitors (2x Adam Audio T7V’s) more clearly in my fairly small room (3m by 6m roughly, with a 1m window on one of the larger sides) that has NO acoustic treatment at all 😱😂. How do you gauge the placement of said traps and what’s a good size set of traps to get an overall flat response to mix with said monitors? I use what I consider the closest micing possible which is an isolation box. And even though I am getting good tones (I have an original old Celestion Green Back in that box ) I always feel like can hear, it‘s been recorded in a very small completely dry space. But maybe that‘s just me , knowing it‘s an isolation box.

I'm my opinion, everything effects everything as far as sound acoustics. Depending on the closed mic cab being used it may only have a very small effect. Nothing is exactly bulletproof.
Close mics with a high gain amp can still pick up the room sound in an untreated room especially, more noticeable at the end of tracks, you are gonna hear an element of the room sound if its not treated, just my opinion from past experience, of course that may be the sound ya want ! Stay Safe
Indeed, when an amp is incredibly loud the room register in the mic when playing, but yes, when its cuts off the room tone will be all that's able to be picked up.

I write/record my own songs or covers here at home and I recently got an electronic drum kit. I used to program drums on my keyboard, but was missing the human feel. With a 1 year old kid and only the evening to record, I try to do everything in the box as much as possible. So I use Amplitube 5, Addictive Drums with my E-drums etc. For me it's also a big advantage that the next day it will sound exactly the same because no mics were moved....
I feel like every mix i do lately is sent back for changes like turning effects down, adding more bass, adjustimg levels ect almost to the point that i feel like its not my mix anymore. How common is this with top engineers and how do you deal with this and not take it personaly? as at the end of the day its somebody elses music and we are just providimg a service.
@@NihilQuest I did three albums with Dave Sardy and Greg Gordon who did Undisputed Attitude and Diabolus in Musica, who had Rick Rubin as Executive Producer and signed off on the mixes. If you listen to Overt Enemy on Diabolus for instance you’ll see how Rick had them narrow the guitars to mostly mono with very narrow panning. Greg said that he was checking the phase on the mix by lowering in Mono and Rick said ‘that’s it, that’s how I want it to sound!’. I suggest listening to music rather than looking on Google for something about it, you can clearly hear what Greg was taking about by listening to the song. Many thanks, Warren

How does the climate affect how you treat a room for sound? I live in Colorado where the air is thinner and dryer than it is where many of these tutorials on this subject are filmed. Most of them are in Nashville, L.A., the Netherlands, and I can't help but feel that these one-size-fits-all approaches I'm finding could lead to other issues that don't exist in other parts of the world. Or am I completely off base here?
I find it hard to believe, that the mic will not pick up reverb from the room, just because it's up to the grill. Reverb can be heard at all points of the room, so I mic should pick it up... Sure, the cab will be a lot louder than the reverb, so the tone of the cab will be barely changed, but you should still hear the tail of reverb on all pauses...
Here's a question for ya: Ar expensive preamps and converters (The ones that cost multiple thousands) just snake oil and a waste of money? Are the cheap (Few hundred dollar) USB interfaces really just as good?
I decided for a long time it was snake oil. I had an old Motu FireWire 8pre I used forever. Sounded fine. Recently, I bought an Apogee Ensemble thunderbolt and was floored how much better EVERYTHING sounded. Got even more curious, and bought a Chandler TG2 for my guitars and it SMOKED the Apogee. I then got a 6176 for vocals and it sounded incredible, immediately like a pro record. It all does make a difference, unfortunately. I wish it didn’t, lol.
I fell victim to Glenns belittling to the point I pieced together a junkyard of a kit, dug out some long ago forgotten mics to mic it together, (soldered together a pile of old xlr cables that where in the t'do bin for 2 decades) ordered an Octapre after figuring I couldn't quite do it with a mixer and two channels. His point was "will canned drums sound adequate? yea, probably. Will it sound intersting? NO!" So now I use real drums. I'm a terrible drummer so I have to edit the shit out of them. But honestly, now when I use canned drums to get a song started for guide tracks and stuff, the canned drums do sound pretty boring. Generic. And when I hear my real drums, even when I hear real dodgy sounding triplets on the ride ... "Yeah! I played them fucking things into them tracks!" Thanks Glenn.

Especially if a sim or plug in might be better sounding. But how do you play the game? I'm doing this because I've spent my whole life dreaming that some day I could work in a 24 track studio. While I'm not going to limit myself to 24 tracks anytime soon, I am pleased with how my actual drums are coming across. Something that would not be possible if I'd hadn't learned to edit them a bit. I'm really good at programing in note for note drum tracks (in the 90s I programed over 500 songs note for note into an SR16 and never touched a preset) and good at getting them to sound real, but it's no where near as fun (it's not fun at all actually) as playing the drums into ten tracks and no where near as fun to listen to. ( and I'll just reiterate, my drum timing is bad bad bad bad) Yeah screw Glenn, he'd love that, but I'm all in here, and real drums are pretty important to my type of music and Glenn Fricker, from his channel, gave a push that I needed.
Still saving up for the bloody blah blah, in the meantime I work with what I got. And it is fine, getting a lot of creative hours under the belt. So I guess I properly end up spending the savings on icecream instead..

When guys say "missing some power" it's not always the guitars actually, sometimes the bass is just thin and lacking, ime.

Arthur INVENTED the virtuosic, heavy metal vocal style! No Arthur Brown, NO metal as we know it, & he did it in the 60s!

When playing live some bands put the cabinet in a travel case with mics. Helps to keep stage levels down.

Always just test more than one method. Example: Record it outside. No room. How will you know what room sounds like unless there’s a no room sound.
