You are the most positive person ever. I’ve read these comments
Hey chiro. Thanks so much! Appreciating you. Haters will always be there. I don’t let myself become one lol.
I'm impressed with your advice AND the rodents. Gotta hand it to 'em, those were some mountain climbing little buggers to get to the siding. I'm fixing up a rental right now that had a rodent problem and I think backer rods and Quad sealant might just do the trick. Thanx Dustin for sharing these handy tips!
thank you serpentine! Always appreciate your comments!
Thank you for posting this helpful video.
Thank you Jay. I appreciate the comment
A small suggestion. Instead of licking the finger i like to recommend putting water and an 1-2 drops of soap in it.. Next dip a small piece of wood in the water and use that to push in the "glue".
This is a method typical used on silicone that is used around windows to get an even and good looking smooth surface ;-) + you dont get it on your fingers or in your mouth.
Awesome input thanks for sharing
Awesome. Exactly what I needed
Thank you cca!
Thank you very much for this video, nice simple solution!
Thanks you shafa!
Very useful. Will head to home Depot and pick some stuff up
You are awesome Brooklyn thank you so much for sharing
THANK YOU! I was told NOT to seal that because that is where trapped rain water and moisture drained out. THANK YOU so much!!!!
good luck steph!
As someone who has worked on building envelopes as a professional you are absolutely correct. Do not completely caulk the bottom of your siding.... It will exacerbate any water issues that you may have in the future and not allow your building envelope to perform properly even without having water issues. You're building envelope has to be able to breathe properly.
If you are having troubles with rodents getting in under the siding you can get fine metal mesh and jam it up inside the gap.
@@kurtm.7494 yes copper is a good choice, so is stainless steel wool
Yes very helpful video thank you!
awesome ansi! thank you!
Awesome video as always! We don’t have any mice issues but, I will be checking around my house to see if mice can get in and sealing it up.
you really are very best sophia.. thank you so much for watching.
Thanks Dustin!👍
thank you AE!
Great info 👍
thank you gabriel! appreciate you sir!
Good video thanks!
Thank you Sam!
Backerod is good for only certain places and gaps to seal for mice, however we use 1/4" wire mesh in a V formation with OSI clear caulking.
Awesome, great input
Does that help for apartments
Thanks very much!!!
Thank you Sherri!
Thank you
You're welcome! thank you
Cool thanks man
thank you!
i think if water does somehow get in behind the siding, you want it to have a path out. maybe some copper mesh along the gap, instead of the backer rod, and then caulk the copper mesh to keep it secure every foot or so, would be a better solution?
wow thats looks easy lol thanks
You got this. Thanks for commenting
Great vidio.
Thank you james!
Please tell us the tickness on the foam backer road you are using, I need it for the same location,
is it 3/4" diameter?
Thanks for the great advice on this video!
Hey so fi! this one was 3/8. Thanks so much for watching!
Your video has the most unique advice that will help me and so many
people, thank you!!!
Hello, I have a question. I am moving into an apartment that have rodents problems I will be on the third floor most likely, but I know sometimes they don’t bother or sometimes they climb to the top floors, do you think this method can be used for an apartment like behind the stoves, possibly under the sink areas like the holes are sometimes I was also thinking about doing cement because I heard that that’s good cause I can’t do it if I cement the holes or cracks and gaps, do you think it’s best ?
would have ordered the backer rod with the link but the it would not arrive until oct 20th i would have liked to get it through the link since you showed me the way. thanks for the video.
You are awesome Kevin I’m sorry I didn’t work out for you, but the repair will! You got this
Thank you. What I need is where to looks to see where baby toads might get into a bedroom; we had a baby toad in a room and a freaked out new mother!
Bill Holt new mama! Bummer bill. I hope this helped!
Used quad, they chewed right through it.......steel wool was the tick that got the job done.
That is awesome. Thank you for sharing.
I live alone and have a broken leg now so I’m unable to go outside to seal up or inspect. What company do you think would do this for me? Handyman? Thanks for your video. Wish I wasn’t afraid of heights such as yourself. 😊👍🏼
hey sp! youre most welcome....handy man..home repair specialist, even a pest guy would be able to help
If I use caulking could I use the DAP brand or do you suggest Guard? Also, I was thinking of stuffing steel wool in, but not entirely sure
Hey Brooklyn people say that the steel wool keeps mice from eating it but if it’s a hard-core cock they won’t eat that either. I like quad. It is definitely hard core. Thank you so much for watching
Since your sealing in all the gaps will the inside walls of the house still get ventilation and will it hold in moisture?
Hey Vet. Great question. The gaps arent for ventilation and there should be no moisture in the wall to hold in. I’m going to go with no on this one. I hope this helps
What would you use if the underneath gap between the house and vinyl siding is a big two inch gap? As the house is built by jetting out from foundation a little bit.
hey mike! 2" ?i would try some exterior trim either wood painted with exterior paint or some vinyl if possible...i hope this helps!
Home Mender Inc Thanks for the reply. Yes, two inches, lol. Underneath I can see material like the old siding when it was covered with the new many years ago. O ok, just not sure how I can attach it as the house side is concrete to the current vinyl siding.
Good morning, great video as always. Looking to be a rodent eliminator and exclusionator, how would you set up a charging table? cost of material and hourly rate or a flat price for every exclusion. Another question: why 90% of rodent exterminator do not propose and do exclusion work, is it to constantly have repeat business. I see a great potential in my home town, I'm in Laval Quebec, thanks for your help. Phil..
Hi Phil Thank you so much I just came down from Montreal where I lived for three years. What an adventure. This video was filmed in pierrefonds This one has a lot to do with how fast are you? Would it be better to do it hourly or would a flat rate be better? Knowing that it may take you one hour to find the problem or it may take you a half a day. I focus on exclusion because I don’t want that mouse to come back but then again I’m not in thatbusiness. If I felt I was fast I would want a flat rate. I hope this helps
Super high man yeah !
Thanks for watching
You’re so friendly!
Parker Jarnigan my man Parker!. Thanks my friend!
I found a Handyman for my 1200 square foot home to seal any crevices where mice might be getting in. He quoted me between $200-$300 in Michigan. Does that sound right? Thanks for your video. 😊
hey shweetie....that doesn't sound outrageous especially if you have mice getting in, sometimes peace of mind knowing it's taken care of is worth the expense. :)
@homemender, can I also do this to keep wasp and lady bugs out?
Absolutely you got this
We had rats get in to our garage because they chewed the wood trim by the garage door, close to where you were referring to the garage door sweep. It was horrible!
those rats can be hardcore dana! Hope you evicted them.. thanks for commenting!
If the mouse was wondering around and said I have a good idea and decided to climb up to the siding. He deserves to live in the house lol
Now this is a fun comment
Recorded horizontally:)
Finally!
can \ will rodents eat through the Quad? I need to seal up a number of gaps in an old house and am looking for the best material to use. It needs to be something to close the opening around windows and cannot be chewed through by rodents. Thanks
JG hi JG! Definitely will NOT eat through quad. The stuff Tastes terrible and it’s pretty hard core. For larger holes you can always throw some steel wool in the holes for added protection but I’ve never known them to mess with the quad. I hope this helps!
Thank you. I've read several reviews of Quad and it sounds like it is very thick and difficult to work with. Any input on this?
yes sir..i've always liked quad..its hardcore. you caulk brick to steel with that stuff.. not difficult to work with if you know your way around a caulk gun, take your time and use the tips i showed you in the video. not sure if rodents eat a silicone base..more pliable but not as good of a product in my opinion. i hope this helps J
@@homemend Just used Quad on my duplex remodel. Had to take a board back off and it was hell trying to get it loose! Serious stuff!
Any hole you need to seal up, Quad can do it xD
You got that right?
how about putting something before the siding so they slip
hey luba! great suggestion! that would definitely work but it would have to be pretty smooth..they can climb just about everything.
I meant if there was a piece of siding laid flat before the opening they would slip and falloff
yes mam!
Would this keep moisture from dripping out?
hey ma!.. if you have a moisture issue, i dont think this will solve it :(
Home Mender Inc well I don’t necessarily have moisture issues but I know the bottom of the siding requires space to release the excess moisture. I meant if I use this method will this cause moisture issues behind my siding?
you should have "house wrap" or a vapor barrier under the siding..siding expands and contracts so sealing the bottom shouldn't prevent it from doing its thing.. i hope this helps.
What about water? Isn't that going to cause water to pool under the siding?
Hey Holly great question. No it should not as it was caulked under the siding
I’m trying to figure out where the mice are entering? But I have siding on the whole house. Maybe they’re coming up from underneath? But how will I find out?
hey marci...they can get in a hole the size of a dime...check the foundation for cracks..make sure youre crawlspace door ( if youre on a crawlspace) is tight, foundation vents not broken, and around your pipes and lines that come into the house..i hope this helps!
Home Mender Inc Thanks. It’s hard to see down there because of the siding. And I can’t access part of the front and back because of a deck and front porch. I have a full basement, but there is siding around the inside blocking my view of the foundation from the inside. Could they come through tiny cracks in old windows? They are much smaller than some size though. The previous owners had an issue with mice, because they had poison around the tops of the basement walls. But I have a can, do didn’t take them seriously for the first seven years. It was only maybe once or twice a year I saw him stalking something, then nothing. I thought they were just leaving, realizing it’s not safe. I set one trap a night in a place my cat can’t get it, and some days i get one mice a day, some days in will be a few days before they come. I can’t imagine how many I have. One ran away with the trap. And they’re attracting flesh flies and house flies, but all the spiders in my basement are killing some of them. I’ve got a mess downstairs. I’m about to use glue traps, although I’m trying to avoid going the torture route.
How can you keep rats from going through ac line?
hey lisa..yes i would stuff around it will steel wool, then fill with great stuff or seal with something hardcore like quad
I have shoved tin foil inder door to keep them out of bedroom but they still manage to get in and bother me its so annoying as I am allergic to their dander or fleas or something on them and I get bit when they come in . horrible
hey todd..you may try some sweep weatherstripping that slides onto the door and screws down......i hope this helps
Keep a cup of water with you and dip your finger in that instead of licking it. This method works well with silicone caulk as well.
Excellent suggestion Jimmy. Thanks so much for sharing
licking part is funny
Thank you mm!
I wouldn't suggest you re-lick your finger after touching the silicone....
That's right richard! eww..quad is awesome like that!
@@homemend unless in comes in flavors, just bring a damp sponge and wear a glove my dude. Licking house materials eems like a bad habit you wouldn't want to pass on to folks!
I have a field mouse that came in through my bath tub drain. This is a first for me. I have had it I am calling some kind of pest control service. I just can't figure out where they are getting in my trailer at. That one coming in through my bathtub drain was the last straw. He either came in through the drain or he fell in now he can't get out of the tub. I ain't helping him out of the tub! I will be glad when this battle is over.
stay with it at man. totally creepy . .mice are not nice. .you got this..
@@homemend I got five more on one glue trap. 4 on another in a separate room. I am trying to hang in there. Thanks for the encouraging words it really helps. When it seems there is no hope and no end in sight.
@@tmangamingx man did you get them?!
Yeah here in AZ I’ve blocked the guy at my company who does seal ups because screw that in this damn heat
i hear ya heat...thats no joke..thanks for sharing!
how do alligators get in the plumbing?
hey karen! how do alligators get in the plumbing?
Your not supposed to seal and cock the vinyl where it meets the foundation. Water and get trapped and cause wood to rot.
hey BS!......gotta keep out those mice man..,.thanks for commenting!
and now the mice are trapped in the house!? How Can you get them out before blocking the entrance?
hey matt..trying to run them out before hand would be ideal...loud music? scent of cat? smoke them out? i have no idea friend :)
After sealing entry points you set traps, especially in the attic.
so I did this exact same thing, but then was advised not to do it as it will trap moisture and down the line will face moisture problem. They recommend installing an anti rodent trim. Now scouring youtube on how to install that.
Hey I ND, I’ve never heard of it, I’m not sure how sealing the house from the outside would trap moisture on the inside Lol The air inside should be ventilated and conditioned?
@@homemend not sure at all, the home depot guy told me and showed me the rodent trim guard. As you can tell my knowledge in this is basically watching videos from people like you. :)
@@homemend can I use that stuff inside an apartment like behind the stove fridge, raider cabinets, even behind washer and dryer area?
Florida is the Rat Capital of the world!
hey linda! yes...they like wearing sandals :)
ah... the old lick your finger trick... I'm sure that tastes delicious.
It’s classic
Love your channel.... only thing I would say is don't lick your finger with Quad. Inhaling too much is associated with "permanent brain, nervous
system, liver and kidney damage or may cause cardiac arrhythmia." Ingesting it is a really bad idea. Easy enough to get a plastic bottle with water or something.
Absolutely P thank you for the tips. I appreciate the input.
Sealed up vents? They wouldn’t be VENTS if they are sealed up!!
lol i suppose you're correct. More specifically, sealing around the vent..good catch! thanks for commenting!
It might not be a smart idea to seal an active rodent infestation out with materials they can chew right through.
Great suggestion Carl. Thanks for sharing
Lose the man bun.
hey deen..my wife likes it..gotta keep it! thanks for watching!
@@homemendAhh. I understand it now. Keep up your videos.
thank you my friend!
you probably shouldn't lick your finger repeatedly and touch an industrial adhesive over and over
