- Launching a kayak can be complicated. When you factor in fishing gear, accessories and equipment, a kayak becomes a very heavy and awkward object. Simply sliding a kayak to the water may not be the best course of action for all types of kayaks either.
In this video we showcase what it's like to launch a kayak WITH Boonedox Groovy Landing Gear, versus without.
My buddy Paul has an Old Town Predator MX and will be showing us a no-wheels option for launching.
I have my Hobie Pro Angler 12 with wheels installed.
You'll notice that one way is definitely faster, but both work well.

i wont' lie...i winced the entire time you were draggin that predator...
I would never drag my kayak unless i had enough money to burn
I wanted to see you take the wheels of once you hit the water
I just don’t agree with dragging a kayak anymore. It just caused too many problems for me...
Well don’t show how you put the gear up when in the water.
Anyone watching this and wondering…. That’s ridiculous to drag your kayak like that. At least buy a cheap cart.
This video should be titled "How to load a $1500 kayak vs. how to load a $4k kayak" lol
Seems like an alternate universe to hear you talking about "social distance" outside. LOL. Seems like a lifetime ago now.
Nope. Wheels.
Cool video. I like unloading my slayer with a boonedox rudder from the bed of my truck. The landing gear makes it Super easy to get in and out of the truck. But reaching back to get the legs out is tougher than I thought. Shame on me for not doing my homework before I bought it but it wasn’t planned at the time of purchase. I thought the legs would rotate up and down by some kind of release button but I was wrong. It’s especially annoying when there isn’t a dock but Maybe I’m doing it wrong. Overall it’s convenient. In my opinion not as functional as I would of liked.
Considering buying the boonedox landing gear but how are they over rough terrain as they look a bit wobbly? Also are the hobie wheels hard to push down in the water as they are buoyant? Cheers
I'm gonna start burning through all your old build videos now that I got myself a Hobie. First mod is going to be the boonedox landing gear, she thiccc
Nice job. Would be nice to see each boat being launched. Maybe like a side view of each.
Great vid
My first time out w/ my kayak after fixing her up, I dragged her w/o rope over about 100 ft of hot blacktop before making it to the beach... had no idea i was taking in water until after I was leaving and started dragging her back to my truck and was leaving a large trail of water! i could have sunk! LOL. I would not recommend ever dragging on hot blacktop... ;o) I have wheels that fit into the scupper holes now but that are such a PITA to get in and out by myself I'm considering alternatives... the Boonedox is perfect but not paying $300 for it when my kayak was under $200... ;o) Definitely going to modify what I have into something like the Boonedox setup. Do actually leave the wheels down in the water? I would have a mess of plants and weeds in those dragging me down constantly... Thanks for the video...
I really appreciate you making these videos. Especially the assembly video you did. The boondox instructions are an insult.
Why do you not put the wheels up? I run the boonedox on my slayer max.
What do you think of the boonedox landing gear in action?
Wait but you never put up your wheels you let them hang.
um ... I didnt know you leave sidekick wheels on and down in the water .. doesn't that create lots of drag??
