- The Space Shuttle era was characterized by the emergence of the first reusable spacecraft along with humanity building the largest structure ever outside our atmosphere, the International Space Station. It was an era of incredible achievement. Collectively, the shuttles Enterprise, Columbia, Challenger, Discovery, Endeavor, and Atlantis orbited the earth 21,152 times and covered 542,398,878 miles. He's not a collector just a guy whose watches are tools with specific memories attached. So refreshing.
This episode and the Moki Martin episode are two of my favourites for that reason! The stories about these watches make them really special.
Agreee
@@matt-lang when i saw this episode i dont know why i remember to Moki Martin episode. Now I know why :)
I think he IS the collector, a true collector. Not another detached from reality celebrity.
@@matt-lang Totally agree!
Ladies and gentlemen this video teaches us that value is not equal to money.
Amen
One of the greatest comments.
Here here brother
Those are all expensive watches...
@Itrap Lint The Seiko 6105 wasn't expensive at the time, it was a real tool watch.
At first I thought, "This guy's so nice. His temperament is too good." Then I realized he's Canadian.
Pilot, scuba diver, doctor and astronaut...this guy is a complete badass. Best episode ever!
such incredible stories. this guy has truly lived life to the fullest.
Not a single Ref. # mentioned, nothing about rarity or patina. Just good honest watches on the wrist of an interesting individual.
Much better than the usual nonsense.
Agree 100%. This guy's values come from within.
Seiko that went into the bottom of the ocean and went to space? Seiko needs to collab with this guy asap!
YESSSS
They've always let their watches do the talking.
That seiko is a one of a kind because of where its been!
I feel like Seiko these days are more into doing collabs with up-and-coming people instead of clouting off known records like this.
And to think it's just an ordinary Seiko at that. I think 🤔 I'd rather by William's Seiko than a Grand Seiko.
So what did you want to be when you were little?
"A doctor, a deep sea explorer, a pilot, a scuba diver, a flight engineer, a hospital CEO, and an astronaut."
Oh wow, what did you become?
"All of them"
Matt McLoughlin makes me think of Frank Jr. Abagnal. But here, it’s true.
Canuck pride here. :o)
That's so awesome. Great gentleman.
This is the go-to Guy for every situation!
You forgot 'skydiver'. What a life he has lived...
Dear people at hodinkee.
This is how watches should be collected. This is how you should feel when you look back at watches. This is what watches truly mean. Doesn't matter if you're wearing a patek or a casio. You need to look back at it and be able to smile.
Regards,
A small time watch collector.
Hey Bighnesh. Are you from India? Which watches do you own? I'd love to look into pieces of Indian collectors
Best talking watches so far, you can actually feel this one ☝🏻
Mee too
Came for talking watches, stayed for philosophical, life enlightening stories
Can’t believe this was posted two years ago and I’m just finding it now in 2022. Will be one of my favorites.
It’s official, this guys is my hero
ohmyafy +1 - amazing story
Chris hadfield is mine
This gentleman's humility is what made me watch all throughout the end, what a story.
What an ordinary collection made extraordinary by an exemplary man, great episode and dare I say one of the greatest Talking Watches of all time. His collection is personal, relatable and there is meaning behind each piece beyond just it's monetary value, his collection is priceless.
Wow, without a doubt the best episode of Talking Watches
A very humble and Interesting man, with great watches that serve their purpose well.
The stories alone make the watches priceless.
I also found out you have to have combined stories of an astronaut, doctor, diver, scientist, and pilot in order to get close to John Mayer’s talking watches episodes.
I LOL'd.
😂
"I remember thinking about my life in the sense of cosmic time." -David Williams
"This is the Nautilus I bought myself after I slept with Jennifer Aniston the first time." -John Mayer
Finally some normal and attainable watches with great history ! Love the insanely expensive watch videos but this one was most enjoyable and relatable. Thanks! Finally some Seikos!
Trent Armstrong - Agree 100% Seiko doesn’t get enough love from the big watch channels! I give them a ton of love on my channel!
Is this the first Seiko on a talking watches? And a properly used 6105 also!
Being a Canadian and and a passionate Seiko Collector, this is the best hodinkee episode in the history of Talking Watches. Being reminded that the watches are not only things to be desired but more importantly watches are tools to get work done accompanying us through our ups and downs and those cherished moments is just truly amazing. I have a collection of watches now but my father's seiko 5 superior still holds a special place in my heart.
The Seiko spacewatch. AWESOME.
Love lengthy semi biographical watch stories like this. Wonderful.
Such a humble, gentle, tough as nails guy....how could anyone not like and be totally impressed with this guy? After 56 years on this planet, I’ve still never met a Canadian I didn’t like!
Like most people who do incredible things he is immensely humble. What he said about up there he realised he could see no borders and that we are in it together is something it would be good for some folks to pause a minute and take that in..
One of the best TW so far. Such a nice guy and such amazing stories. I want a X33.
When he spoke of his parents while looking at his watch remembering them in space.... how cool can you be
Honestly one of the coolest Hodinkee videos yet. This is what every watch collector, especially someone who collects 'tool watches', longs for. To develop a story, a connection, and a history with their pieces that add more value to them than just the sticker price. Not only has this guy lived an incredible life, but he brought all these along with him and they already mean more than the logo on the dial.
This is so much more than just a “talking watches” this is a chance to talk with a man who’s quite possibly done it all. Thank you.
tool watches with priceless memories + astronaut/doctor/diver with a soothing voice = crazy good episode.
It's remarkable how Hodinkee is able to top themselves
Most underrated Talking Watches episode
"we are all in this together..."
"...yes it's true"
free assange
Seiko, omega, Rolex are the true Trinity of Watches!
Agree!
forget the watches, this guy's story is amazing. lol
What a great episode.
There should be more talking watches with professionals who really rely on these watches and less of watch collectors/celebs/fashion guys
100% agree.
This guy’s a real under achiever. He needs to go do something with his life
This is one of my favourite talking watches! Absolutely enjoyed how well spoken and humble this man is when telling his stories.
I honestly feel like this video deserves 10x more views than some of the other talking watches videos. It’s under rated and simply incredible with historical significance
one of the best episodes if not the one. Goosebumps.
Renaissance man who speaks very highly of his wife. Kudos to him!
Damn, didnt expect this to be this good and interesting. Very nice and cool guy. The interviewer is lovely as well.
This is my favorite Talking Watches episode ever. Every single watch he own has a function in a story. Not just because 'it's beautiful' or 'i just like it', or 'i just have to have it as a collector'.
Love the subtle drone music in the background. Fits this Segment really well.
What an amazing guy. These are the best kind of interviews. Kind, insightful and articulate.
So refreshing that he didn't once mention the resale value or scarcity of any of his watches...but instead spoke of the rare experiences his watches had shared with him.
Extraordinary man. I’m really moved by his words and the sheer scope of his life. Beautiful episode Hodinkee, keep up the good work.
When I saw this episode was nearly twice as long as other Talking Watches, I wondered why? Then the man started to speak and it all made sense. Best episode of Talking Watches in my opinion - a gentleman, scholar, astronaut, and a global ambassador for Canada.
This is the best episode bar none. Actually got me into watches.
This is one of the most emotional episode of Talking Watches. Thank you for sharing it with us
Finally a person of interest on talking watches not a sport star or celebrity ,a person of substance and a delight to listen to, love the seiko watches not grand seiko just ordinary seikos which you guys never cover, more of this please.
Revisited this a year later and it’s still my fave episode
My deepest respect. The interviewer was excellent and the guest outstanding. Definitely in the top 5 TW
Back to watch it again. SO GOOD.
Man, this episode made me smile a lot. Thoroughly good.
This man is a true gentleman. Fantastic episode. Thank you for sharing your stories.
One of the best " Talking watches " !!
Very emotional and thought provoking.
I could listen to David all day. This was an amazing episode, thanks for sharing.
This is probably the best Talking Watches episode ever.
Wow, by far the best talking watches I think I've seen. The stories with every watch are amazing
Hats off to this guy. What an incredible life.
Cole did a great job. I love his questions. Very good 'Talking Watches.' Keep it up, Hodinkee!
Very soothing voice ... I could listen to the good dr all day.
Karim Elfouly right?!! I mean, every single word he said is clear and easy to understand and most important is so soothing...
Have seen all the talking watches 2 or 3 times but this one makes me smile when I'm in a bad mood.
This is what watches is all about ! Use your watches, make good memories, reach the limits.
There's an unveiling beauty in every watch that emerges only when you use it.
A perfect and very personal collection..If only he had a GShock as well !
Stories like this is why Hodinkee is the top website for watch collectors
Hodinkee, pay attention, this is one of your very best episodes!
I'm a pilot too, and I wear seiko sumo while flying. Salute to you Mr. Williams .
Wow... these are the watch collections that really intrest me, not so much the guy that ownes the limited edition in precious metal watch that he is just showing of because he can afford it.
Thanx!!!!!
Seiko is just an amazing watch, from seiko 5 to grand seiko
More than the watches, his journey throughout his life is take breathing. Congratulations to Mr. Willians and the HODINKEE team for this absolutely talking watches episode.
Best episode so far. Exactly what I would expect from a Canadian...owner of what is likely the most accomplished collection of watches in the world today and he's happy to sit down for a chat. Truly refreshing.
Makes me so proud to be a Canadian! Williams' combination of humility and joie de vivre just put a smile on your face.
WE WANT MORE TALKING WATCHES HODINKEE
This is by far the best episode of talking watches I've watched
This is my favorite interview so far. I didn’t want it to end. Very interesting man.
the best episode of hodinkee ever ! Incredible stories, it feels like im watching a movie just by listening to this interview !! almost shed a tear
This is the best episode so far. The stories attached to each watch are what make them priceless and unique...and that is the point. I could listen to David talk all day. What a humble man with amazing experiences to share :)
The best Talking Watches episode. What an incredible man!
I love going back to watch these talking watch series. This is a fantastic story. Beyond the watches, awesome to see someone live such amazing experiences.
Probably the greatest seiko ever, witnessed the space and the ocean through David Williams!
Easily my favorite Talking Watches episode... perhaps my favorite watch related video on the web. Didn't want it to end.
I feel that watches capture the passage of time in your life. For every major milestone, a watch captures the moment and carries on with you.
Beautiful watches and even more beautiful stories attached to them. This is one of my favorite episodes already!
Dr. Williams = Class Act
Proud to be a Canadian
This is really emotional...what a fellow, a true gentleman. One of my favorite episodes ever, for any channel!
Dr. David Williams is one incredible human being.
by far your best interview to date!!! more like that please.
What a truly inspiring man. Thank you Dr. Williams for your service to all humankind, and thank you Hodinkee for a wonderful interview.
That breitling suddenly becomes cool
What an all around amazing guy. Thanks for this Hodinkee!
You did it again Hodinkee. Best episode so far! While I was watching this I had a greater appreciation for my humble G Shock which has gone with me around to world to time my photography exposures. It's the memories that you make with a watch that makes it truly great.
Absolutely beautiful film. This is the most beautiful and inspiring watch collection video I've ever watched. Diving deep into the essence of watch as a tool and a collection of timepieces with deep stories and memories beyond the shallows of luxury watch collecting for vanity.
Hodinkee, despite the awkwardness of the host, you've upped your game. The shots, the sound design, the graphics, the cuts, you've really made a well-produced film with a great story to tell. Thank you for showing this to us. Thank you for introducing David's watches, his stories, and his views. And thank you for going outside the cult of collecting watches as luxury. I hope to see more of this.
Happy Birthday, Sir David! This was truly wonderful and inspiring.
Thank you for your service, Dr. David Williams.
Excellent and - as someone else commented - refreshing. A really good piece from an interviewer who let the man speak and didn't interrupt. Great.
Probably my favourite talking with watches episode
What a brilliant man! Thanks Hodinkee for bringing this to us.
A simple man, incredible achivements and a great story. No vanity, a rarity in the majority of this series. Best talking watches ever!
A great video and nice for a change to see a really good range of watches that don't all cost the price of a house that we could never afford.
So pure and authentic, absolutely loved it. Time to go out and explore.
Such a great episode. Deep, refreshing, and down to earth, not just “look at what I have”
Best intro to any Hodinkee video ever. "Looking back at earth and you see no lines separating countries and that in fact we are all in this together". Incredible man with incredible stories who actually USED his tool watches.
This brought tears in my eyes. As an ex Airline pilot, there is no substitute to seeing the planet from above. Flying at 3 am and looking down, there is only the dark figures of the land compared to the ocean. It's a spectacular view especially when you are going to land in the early hours of the morning. Viewing the sun rise, makes you feel like you are only a small speck compared to the planet you lived in. At 35,000 feet, there are no differences between a mansion or a small house, because everything looks tiny and couldn't be differentiated at that height. Imagine an astronaut above the world and the experience above it... it's spectacular to say the least...
All praise to God the Almighty.
the last sentence is the crown jewel of your statement... all praise to God, the most gracious, the most merciful
All praise to God.
Beautiful episode. What an inspiring life. Dr.Williams resumed well what watches should be and what sort of emotions and sentiments they can provoke on their owners. And his quote about the Earth is priceless. We are all in this together.
Oh my goodness, best episode yet. My grandfather worked on a lot of those planes and this is in my home town in Hamilton, Ont. So happy for this release.
