That old Ariens gearbox has a crown and pinion in it like a car differential very strong. I’ve been using 75W90 synthetic gear oil seems to work fine. I put a new roll pin in and found it was shim too tight. wasn’t sure how to re-shim the gears so I doubled up the gasket on the plate was still a little snug, but it worked OK after. Roll pin never broke since the augers are nice and free now. It’s actually fairly easy to take apart and replace the three seals in the gear housing. Seals were still available at that point. I don’t know about now. On some of the snow blowers that just take grease in the gear case I add oil with the grease. No drain, plug or fill. I just split the case apart and take it off and clean it. Install grease and oil silicone the two half’s and put back together. I knew you could tip it back on the handle bars and would balance itself. didn’t know you can fill the gear case that way to get the proper level. That’s a good tip. I’ll have to try that next time I do the gear case service.

One of the most overlooked pieces of most blowers is that worm gear differential. Most every blower I get in my shop, that part has never been serviced. Heck alot of people fail to change the oil (or even check it) so it's a wonder the snowblowers last as long as they do!
Remember to check the bushings or bearings on the outside ends of the auger shaft. Wear can put pressure on the gearbox seals and can change the interface of the gears. On the "cheaper" machines check for distortions in the housing causing the three bearings to be out of alignment. (probably from poor storage). Also, the aftermarket shoes are nice, I put them on my machine for grass areas, but for heavier snow they will cause the machine to ski upward. The smaller contact surface on the factory shoes keep the machine from riding up. The rotation of the augers will pull the front of the machine up in heavy snow, especially the plow berms at the end of the driveway. Be careful because the handles snapping down can cause injury.
You are a fantastic doing that video spoke slow and showing what you were doing nice and slow too.The last time I operated a snowblower was probably 40 years ago.It was my dads I used it for my steady customers that I took care of there yard and snow removal when I was 14-20 years old.I just put gas it checked the oil and away I went. I just bought a 2023 Ariens two-stage 252 CC snowblower and want to educate myself on everything to obviously keep it problem free.
Extremely well executed video JB well done. We have an account with Stens in Brantford Ontario Canada and have been notified that they no longer carry the "00" grease and according to Donyboy73 it is difficult to get. We have just ordered 6 bottles from Canada Power Technologies in Canada which carry a Champion "00" grease. Originally we were charging $1 Cdn per ounce but now will have to charge $2 per ounce due to cost increases. In 9 years we have only serviced one Ariens snowblower which is hard to believe but our closest dealerships are 20 miles away and most of the models we work on are MTD made.
Hey Wayne! Thanks for sharing this info my friend! Interesting you only serviced one ariens over the years. Says a lot about their durability. Have a good weekend my friend! Thanks for watching
Awesome, awesome video. Now I do have a question if I may. I have a LS Tractor with snow thrower LW3150, I cannot find anything about changing the snow thrower gear box oil, not the amount of oil or how to go about doing it. Also I have 3 plugs, one on the top, one center and one bottom. Is it possible I drain old oil, replace bottom plug, then remove center plug and top plug and fill with gear oil till it comes out of that center plug area and then close it all up. Sorry to bother you with this but I can’t find anything on how to go about doing this. Thx in advance.
9:19 Hey JB I have texted you a couple of times and I have learned a lot and thanks for your advice. You did mention about making a video of your gear box and how to add grease or oil to it. Mine is a Craftsman with a blue filler on top so do you carefully pull or screw it off? And someone mentioned the same thing and you said to use a needle point to fill. Great idea and I found out by using a needle to fill the auger with grease is far better than fighting with the plastic tube that keeps falling off the can when I am trying to fill it. This of course is for those who don’t have grease fittings. Keep those videos coming!!
Hey Jim those you may have to pop out if they don’t have lines for a screw driver. Check to see if it’s grease or oil filled and have at it. Thanks for being a cool fan jim! 👍
I have a Ariens St824 that's a older model. I have had it for 4 years always changed the motor oil and that's all. I recently on Friday just got the Valavaline 74-90 synthetic stuff. I haven't ever changed it since I've had it. The previous owner I doubt ever changed it.
I have a 2008 troybilt that I had to replace the worm gear. That gear box was packed with grease and I would agree with you about the grease being tossed to the sides. Lots of grease in the case, very little on the gear. Plus it was a mess to clean all the metal shaving out of the gear box. These machines also dont even have a gasket, they are only together with gasket maker. I replaced the grease with 90w and it seems to suffer a little bit of seepage, but does not leave any oil on the ground after sitting for weeks, so I keep an eye on the oil level and add as needed. I would not recommend replacing the assembly for a worn out gear either. The assembly for my machine was $320 but the gear was only $35!
My 2022 Ariens does not have a drain plug on the gear box. It also does not have a throttle. I hope Briggs knows what they are doing. Do you have any videos on the maintenance of these "new" style blowers? Thanks
I cracked the case on a Honda HS724. All the oil leaked out and snow and salt got in. It ran another five years without fixes or maintenance, we had it already for eight years at that point. At twelve years, we gave it away because the chute was rusty and hard to adjust. The gearbox was still working fine, still munching on salt.
You have to be a little bit careful here in reality, because not all manufactures really set up snowblowers for gear oil. A lot of them are set up for and are better suited for a more permanent grease about 2/3 full in gearbox, often a type of lithium grease. That’s what we used to carry on the truck when I worked for craftsman/Sears. Especially on the craftsman blowers I used to work on a lot. The seals in them simply weren’t designed for an oil and in reality were only a dust seal and they weren’t even very good at that. Maybe when they were brand new, some of them would’ve held oil, but in my world no way. Sure I could’ve put seals in, but even the steel shafts were so rusty and worn it would take way more labor and parts than it’s worth to get liquid sealed. One thing to remember is on a lot of them the big gear on the shaft the times rotate on is made out of brass. It is intended to self-destruct and be replaced. The other gear is hardened steel. The pieces of brass inside the gearbox from this gear, showing up looking like you just found gold will not hurt you as it’s a soft enough substance that it doesn’t hurt steel at all. so when you’re in a hurry, getting your machine running before the blizzard hits, you don’t have to really clean it out that much because as I said, that stuff isn’t really gonna hurt your machine.😅😅😅😅😊
A greased gearbox is a nightmare waiting for someone...the only trouble I had are the greased ones. The last one failed because the greased was caked everywhere but the gears, dry hard packed grease. My first one was the same, so when I repaired it,I went half grease, topping off with 90 w...without experience or Google it was a "best guess " for me, 14 years and didn't blow up!!😁👌 My experience, oil in the gearbox!!🤣😂
Ive been researching this i just changed mine with Valvoline 80w90 synthetic but i have a rear seal leak if i tip her back all the way. 00 grease will work and it thicker than synthetic gear oil. It will flow. Next year im switching over
The disadvantage of worm gear vs punion gear is there is the same worm tooth in constant contact driving the auger gear. I never noticed a leaking gearbox, and was blowing hard drifted snow. The whole gearbox shit itself not long after. Now, i check it often because a leak wont be noticed as the snow washes any evidence away.

I have an old Ariens 10M6D which I just re-powered with that Predator..its a whole new machine. The gearbox housing has always leaked, and likely needs a new gasket .. it's a lousy procedure to perform that surgery but realistically on a 52 year old machine it needs to be done. It'd be great for you to show the operation.

I have a mid ‘80s John Deere 1032 which I believe was made by Ariens. The owners manual says refill the gearbox with SAE 5W-20. Could this be right? If so would synthetic be ok? Or maybe conventional non-detergent? Gearbox is cast iron, does not have a flat steel top, all cast iron, and has no drain plug.
Your instructions are always clear and include little inserts of hints or best practice. Enjoy your channel ... Ariens should hire you to do their instructions.

Very good video. I have a Simplistic Snowblower with only one drain hole on my gearbox I think it’s a 2009. But new to me, bought it used. How do you know if there is grease in the gearbox or oil? Question 2 This model has a motorized snow shoot. I’m concerned that it may fail or go bad with no alternate way of moving it back-and-forth. Do you have any advice?
Hey Chris! Stick something thin like a zip tie down the fill hole to see what’s inside. Not really any other way to check. As far as the motorized chute goes don’t let it go bad lol! 🤣 perhaps order back up parts and save them for when it does. 👍
My snow blower gearcase contains real grease, not liquid grease like your Stens 00 grease in a bottle. Oil lubricates better than grease, but I worry about compatibility of adding oil to my grease. I also worry about the seals not being designed for oil. Thoughts? Mine is a 10HP Yard King or Yardman.

Hey buddy, I got an Ariens snowblower given to me today and the model number is 910008. The serial number is 016233. Do you know how I can determine what the age of it is? I think it’s a ST 724.
Hey John you may be able to determine the age of your machine on the scotlawerence.com website. He’s got a lot of info on older ariens snowblowers! Thanks for watching!
schweet...now pull the deluxe 28 out and service Her!!!!! ha some guys are using redline synthetic gear oil. ariens Doesnt make oil, ...and their price is....kinda ridiculous....
I caught a rock just right in between the rake and the shroud on one of those older 724's and it broke my gears even with the proper pins in the shaft. Fortunately I had another parts machine with a good bucket.
Clearing snowplow berms puts a lot of pressure on the gearbox especially when you are operating in the zone just before your shear-bolt protection. Most of your "box store" machines are not designed for this use. Break down the berm with a shovel before clearing with the machine or break down and purchase a heavy-duty machine. If clearing berms is a part of your reality then get an auger with serrated teeth. This takes some of the pressure off the gears. If your seals are leaking and you can't replace them right away then you can use a gear oil of higher viscosity TEMPORARILY. Use gear oil designed for snowblowers. The issue may not be lubricity but reactions between materials especially seals.
I just learned something else. Never knew about this until just now & with the brutal snowfalls we have in buffalo NY this is valuable information & definitely maintenance
So you covered the Ariens with a drain and fill plug. What about those with a plastic plug on the top? I work on alott of those. Getting 00 grease or gear oil in is a PITA!!
Hey bean, I have seen someone take a grease gun with a needle on the end and pumped grease in that way. Worked well just took a little bit because less comes out at a time. Perhaps that’s worth a look!
Do all snow blowers work like this? With mine, I have always just pushed more cold weather grease into the gear box with a grease gun using the zerk. I am supposed to drain this and then replace it with brand new stuff?
Hey Billy, a lot of snowblowers work like this. Not all but most. Grease doesn’t exactly drain out. I have heard of people pouring gas inside and flush the grease out that way. I don’t don’t think you’ll need to flush it out. If you got enough grease in there, you should be good to go. Thanks for watching

One of the most overlooked pieces of most blowers is that worm gear differential. Most every blower I get in my shop, that part has never been serviced. Heck alot of people fail to change the oil (or even check it) so it's a wonder the snowblowers last as long as they do!
You got it! Thanks again for sharing painter!
Thanks for sharing Edwin!
Appreciate the feedback my friend! Thanks for sharing! 👍
That sounds like a good plan! 👍
Sounds like you’re ready to go fox! Thanks for sharing and watching bud!
Wow! Costly repair! Thanks for sharing your story imprezed! 👍
My 2022 Ariens does not have a drain plug on the gear box. It also does not have a throttle. I hope Briggs knows what they are doing. Do you have any videos on the maintenance of these "new" style blowers? Thanks
Hey John! I’ll probably be doing a video on these newer gearboxes soon! Stay tuned bud!
Wow! That’s crazy! Thanks for sharing my friend!
Once again, I learn more on Saturday morning than I do the rest of the week! Great video.
Ha Awesome Michael! Appreciate you and the positive feedback bud! Thanks for watching as always! 👍👍
Thanks for sharing this taz
A greased gearbox is a nightmare waiting for someone...the only trouble I had are the greased ones.
The last one failed because the greased was caked everywhere but the gears, dry hard packed grease.
My first one was the same, so when I repaired it,I went half grease, topping off with 90 w...without experience or Google it was a "best guess " for me, 14 years and didn't blow up!!😁👌
My experience, oil in the gearbox!!🤣😂
Thanks for sharing this Barry! Dried up grease is no fun!
Ive been researching this i just changed mine with Valvoline 80w90 synthetic but i have a rear seal leak if i tip her back all the way. 00 grease will work and it thicker than synthetic gear oil. It will flow. Next year im switching over
Thanks for sharing Joseph!
Great video. FYI: The drain plugs you showed us have NPT (National Pipe Threads) which require Teflon to be applied for threads to seal.
@@Mr.Titanium1911 thanks for tip titanium
The disadvantage of worm gear vs punion gear is there is the same worm tooth in constant contact driving the auger gear.
I never noticed a leaking gearbox, and was blowing hard drifted snow. The whole gearbox shit itself not long after. Now, i check it often because a leak wont be noticed as the snow washes any evidence away.
Thanks for the tip.

Hey Taka! I’d be down with filming that procedure but only if I get another machine like mine. Mine is working great. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it ya know. Thanks for watching
I would go according to the manual. Synthetic should be fine. It would flow better in colder temps.
Your instructions are always clear and include little inserts of hints or best practice. Enjoy your channel ... Ariens should hire you to do their instructions.
Appreciate you Irish! I’ve contacted them a few times now to do some collaborations but no word back! I think they like to let their products do the talking! Thanks for watching! 👍
Well I have an old one 1978. And of course the oil seals leak a little bit. I’m on the fence about disabling and replacing the seals. Thanks for another great video 👍
Hey Anthony, if you can get your hands on the new parts, get the unit disassembled relatively easily then you should be good to go. If you got rust in a lot of places that’s a sign that this will be a tough repair. Thanks for watching my friend.

Very good video.
I have a Simplistic Snowblower with only one drain hole on my gearbox I think it’s a 2009. But new to me, bought it used. How do you know if there is grease in the gearbox or oil?
Question 2
This model has a motorized snow shoot. I’m concerned that it may fail or go bad with no alternate way of moving it back-and-forth. Do you have any advice?
I think I should've referred to the one Drain Hole as a Fill Hole
Hey Hanowski! I would stick with what’s in the gearcase. If it has grease stick with grease. 👍
I have a 1979 john deere 1032 snow blower with a heavy duty auger gearbox. Just a fill hole at the very top. How would I approach filling this absolute beast. Love your videos. Thank you.....Pete

Hey buddy, I got an Ariens snowblower given to me today and the model number is 910008. The serial number is 016233. Do you know how I can determine what the age of it is? I think it’s a ST 724.

some guys are using redline synthetic gear oil. ariens Doesnt make oil, ...and their price is....kinda ridiculous....
I’ll probably be doing that video soon Harry! Stay tuned my friend! Thanks for watching
I caught a rock just right in between the rake and the shroud on one of those older 724's and it broke my gears even with the proper pins in the shaft. Fortunately I had another parts machine with a good bucket.
Ouch! Those are not an easy or cheap fix either.
Thanks for sharing Edwin!
