I’m a 5th grade teacher, and often my students have a lot to teach me. I had a homeless student living in a shelter, which another boy knew about, so he discretely asked him for his shoe and clothing size. This was a kid without a lot of money himself. But for Christmas, he brought in a wrapped presents of shoes, clothes, winter gear, snacks, McDonald’s coupons, a few toy cars, and Legos because he knew he loved those toys. He was discrete about it to protect the boy’s privacy, and expressed that he knew he needed the food and clothes, but also knew that every kid deserves toys on Christmas. I cannot tell you how much this boy’s face lit up when he saw this ❤️
I love this so much! That kid had some amazing parents! I try to pay it fwd any opportunity I get bc lord knows I didn’t stay clean & rebuild my life without any support! I’ve taught others what compassion looks like, and I’m not gonna stop! Thanks for sharing your story! 🌻

I've seen some of my students with the biggest behaviors start to flourish when we develop a close relationship and they realize that I see them as a deserving human, not as their behavior. All my students' "bad" behaviors are just children who don't yet have healthy methods for expressing their needs! I used to say to one boy, "You know I'm on your team, right?" whenever he was starting to lose control, and he almost always would calm down and say, "Yeah, I know you are." ❤
Bless you Jen for seeing homeless people as humans and not worthless people. If I ever get my crazy life back together, and I’m working on it, I’m sending supplies for go bags.
Yes ur so right ! Sometimes I once seen this homeless looking so sad and looking down . I passed by and said hi there and they smiled and said hello dear
I've done this for many years but personally for teen moms and domestic abuse victims in shelters. I volunteer at the food pantry and we also make them there for everyone, whether just struggling or homeless. We do socks, hygiene and feminine products, Aquaphor. a reusable water bottle, food, first aid items, compact hairbrushes, and most have gift cards to Cvs or Walgreens so if something is needed, they have a few bucks for it. If not, there is food and drinks there. People can purchase gift cards to donate, and we always get a lot.
This is so helpful! I always feel like “what do I prioritize”? I always do soap, toothbrush and toothpaste and deodorant put beyond that I’m feel like there’s so much to give what do I prioritize. Also I literally have not thought about sunscreen in the winter which feels so silly. My kid is Disabled and the organizations she’s a part of always have sponsors that give reusable water bottles, sunglasses, gaiters and a bag so I always put those into go bags.
The non profit I work for just did a pad and tampon drive. A lot of people brought in the smallest bags/boxes you can buy but it added up fast to make a huge difference!
I am so ready to do this. I used to donate to animals and st Jude stuff so I wanna try this never did this. So I make a bag and just hand it to ppl in my neighborhood or we’re suppose to mail this to you and you give these out. Jenn I love everything you stand for. Bless you
I haven't been able to donate much to S4L recently but hopefully soon I can get back to making more donations. I have a big box of children's books and will ship it as soon as I can afford the shipping. I sent another box a while ago and hope it was helpful! Books might not be life essentials but I love to gift on the stuff my loved ones no longer need for their munchkins.
Hey Jen! I just wanted to chime in about putting a full size shampoo or full size conditioner or really full size anything you think oh yeah it'll last in a long time but I would think oh my God where am I going to put this this is heavy you keep your full size shampoo in your shower I keep my travel size shampoo in my backpack if I carry the full size shampoo full size conditioner full size body wash full size toothpaste everywhere with me you see that just adds up and adds weight in my backpack so while I would be very grateful for go bag with full size items personally I would probably fill up a travel size bottle I already have and then give the rest to somebody else to do the same but when you're making these GO bags I really encourage people to think about the weight and think about how much unnecessary stuff there might be in them just wanted to give another perspective thank you.

The taxi driver has no idea who you are if he tells you to stay in at night because of homeless people.
