    You are a god send! Ive been dealing with this constantly in arizona the past few months and its been driving me crazy. Ive watched so many videos and everyone points to the dometic toilet (which i already have the revised version) and was at a loss. Then stumbled across this video! Went straight to the roof and sure enough, the gaps were HUGE! Sealed them up, and by the time i was off the roof and back into the trailer it already smelt 10x better! You are the man!

    Just did this fix on our 2021 forest river Salem fsx. The black pipe was just like this and they even left the roof membrane piece they cut up inside it. Filled the gap FULL of clear dap silicone and it fixed it. You sir are a hero. I cannot say thank you enough for this video.

    Not sure my issue but I recently bought a 05 keystone Montana that I’m renovating. I’m about 50% done with the process but when I bought it I smelled nothing no bad smells at all. Well of course spending hours working on it I used the bathroom in it as well as family also. I finally got my septic hooked up to it. And decided to empty the black tank…took about 7-8minutes (not sure how full it was) but ever since I’ve emptied it, I smell sewer (bathroom has no smell at all) but I only smell it when using ac (not the roof ac) I bought a indoor unit for temporary use that runs a exit air hose out one of the windows. Doesn’t pull air from outside, it’s simply pushing hot air out of the ac itself like a window unit would. I have that ac sitting next to the main slide out in the living room area. Sewer smell starts in the bedroom tho and eventually moves down to the living room area. (I know it is pulling air from behind it inside the camper). I’m kinda leaning that it’s possibly the same issue ur having but why would it only start after I emptied the black tank? I run this ac for weeks inside with no smells running thru the camper until the day I emptied the tank. Maybe you might have some insight

      So it sounds like you're using a portable ac. That takes air from inside your camper and runs it across the condenser them ejects the air outside through that 4" tube that usually goes in a window. This creates a negative static pressure inside the camper compared to outside pressure. This is allowing air to be drawn in through the ceiling cavity and yes most likely around your vent pipe. Id seal it up and also seal up the return air cavity on your ceiling ac unit so no air is getting into that space from where wires come through and any other gaps.

      this is most likely a faulty air admittance valve...like 99%. It stayed open and now your bathroom smells rank always. I need to replace mine I figured out from watching a few videos while vacationing in Mexico. Not gonna find that part here. Maybe I can force it closed between dumping the tank.

    God bless you and your family!!! I did this today and it worked IMMEDIATELY! I have been dealing with this for weeks and trying to schedule someone to come out where I live with no success. I will definitely have to air out for a bit from how long it went I'm sure, but it worked and I will be able to sleep in my bedroom with the AC again! Thank you soooooo much!

    Thank-you so much for this post!! My daughter's camper had the same issue and this totally makes sense for when I remove the vent caps it had a huge gap around the vent pipe and the pipe was at least an inch below the vent outlet. I also spray foamed around the pipe but left it about a 1/2 inch below the vent pipe so I could cauld on top of the spray foam. I greatly appreciate the tip

    Huge thanks. My wife and I live in our RV full time while we traveling and the sewer smell started to become a big issue! I actually used a can of spray foam to fill completely fill the gap and then followed it up using the silicone to make the seal. I’m not trying to count my chickens before they hatch but It’s now been 30 minutes and the smell is gone!!! We will see how it goes tomorrow when it’s in the temp gets into the upper 90’s.

    Been having this issue randomly year 5 of full time! I noticed it was the worse when the AC's kicked on, especially the rear AC. I have sealed off my AC's inside with aluminum tape and made the custom air divide in to force through the vents. However, I think since I got my tailer the duct system in the roof is broken right near those vents which would make all of this make sense!

      @michaelplatko3994 this seems to have been the last place of the puzzle. Got some plumbers putty and filled those gaps and it seems to be gone. While I had the caps off I could smell the exact smell if i got close that I smelled inside so pretty sure that was it.

    Having this exact same problem. Air conditioner is just rancid thru the whole camper only when the toilet is flushed. I have come across another thread online where the guy used an endoscope to follow the AC Ducting (which is just utilizing the framing gaps in the ceiling) from the AC towards the black tank vent pipe, and discovered the black tank vent pipe travels directly up and thru the AC duct. And with that style of roof vent, it is able to create a vacuum at that gap and suck all the nasty smells back down beside the pipe and into the AC Ducting. Tomorrow I am picking up some different venturi style vents and lap sealer and making sure that vent cannot possibly allow stink air back into the trailer and into the AC Ducting. This will also help the AC run more efficiently as it will not be sucking any hot outdoor unmetered air into the system. Double whammy.
    Wil you be replacing your black/grey tank roof vents as well?

    Dude, I've been experiencing the exact same issue. While I'm no a/c guy, I know how they work. What you just showed (I'm hoping) is the problem. Makes perfect sense. It can't be anything else. Tell Logan I said "hey." Seriously though, thanks for posting this, this has been driving me nuts trying to figure out.

    • @michaelplatko3994

      Glad I could help. And yeah once you think about it, it really can't be anything else unless a vent pipe is broke or something like that.

      @@michaelplatko3994 As it turned out, there's a 3 inch gap between my roof and ceiling that is filled with insulation. The black tank vent was actually in two pieces and the leak was at the joint, about 6 inches from the top. I resealed it with some silicon and bam, problem solved. Thanks again!

    Would this be the same with the heater being on and getting that same smell only when running heater ?

    • @michaelplatko3994
      @michaelplatko3994  11 місяців тому

      If you have to run your ac for heat (heat pump or strip heat) then yes. If it's a seperate furnace, then no. That could be an unglued or broken pipe joint inside the return air for the furnace. Without seeing the setup it's hard to guess

    Thank you so much for this video. I have a beacon 5th Wheel and it smells like sewage also in my living room and bedroom. I cannot get rid of the smell for the last week. I’ve done so many things. I have flushed the black tank so many times. I believe it’s the problem that I have. Was the black tank also The same with the same gap? So you’re saying just put some silicone in that small little gap and that should fix the problem?

    • @michaelplatko3994
      @michaelplatko3994  8 місяців тому

      Yeah that gap leads to your ceiling and when the ac is running the return air can suck some small amounts of air from that space. Cleaning your black tank is good but it's a poop tank it's always going to smell bad and a reason they put the vents on the roof. Sealing these up seems to make a huge difference. Sealing up where the air return is on your ac units also helps but can be a little trickier. Good luck.

    When the bedroom ac is on (which is next to the black tank vent) and I flush the toilet. That is usually when I get the sewer smell coming in the bedroom ac.

    I need help on a strange issue also that is stranger than yours. My Black tank vent pipe and vent cover was eating off by some rodent. So only about 1 " of pipe is sticking up. Do you or anyone else know how I could add enough pipe to install another vent cap? I think just adding a vent cap over the 1" of pipe would produce the same bad effect you had. Or would it be OK if I make sure the pipe is sealed so NO gases can get in the ceiling like your issue. Any help would be great.

    • @michaelplatko3994
      @michaelplatko3994  Рік тому

      I've worked on brand new campers where the pipe is actually below the roof deck. If you're an inch above you should be fine just seal it up so no gases get below the deck.

    • @michaelplatko3994
      @michaelplatko3994  6 місяців тому

      You can use thumb gum if the gap is too big. Silicone works just fine for smaller gaps.

      @@michaelplatko3994 ......put me in for a big thank you also!! I bought a 360 Siphon vent to install on the sewer vent pipe.....the smell with the air conditioner on was unbearable!! Removed the old vent.....found the one and a half inch sewer pipe going through about a 3" hole in my roof.....the vent pipe was also obstructed with a piece of the roof membrane which they failed to remove at the time of assembly. Wasps were well on their way making a nest in the wall also.....used about close to a tube of silicone to secure the pipe to the oversized hole they cut in the plywood roof.....installed the new vent and covered the base and seams with Dicor.....thanks again for the tip :) Much more pleasant smelling sewer on the out side of the RV vs inside of the RV!! lol Will check out the Gray Water vent once my sense of smell returns!! lol
