So I lived and worked in Thailand and had to return West during Covid. I’m choosing to retire in the Philippines, but I personally avoided Dumagette simply due to all that drama on UA-cam it reflected poorly on the community, and I just didn’t wanna have to deal with any of that because that’s a lot of the reason. I’m leaving America permanently in seven days.

This is a good one Dan....I want to add something (as a long time graduate of your schooling)...I have seen expats chase women around restaurants and bars and speak to the local women in such an insulting and condescending manner ("big American here to save you from your miserable life!")....I stopped going to those places. I'm back in Mexico now, my suggestion is that if you want to meet truly great women try volunteering a day a week. You will also learn the local language, and make your town a better place for everyone! Skip the bars and cheap pickup lines.
    You will see things differently.

You were very diplomatic in your discussion of the problems generated by a high concentration of expats in any area of a foreign country. I suspect when that occurs it results in a microclimate of wherever those expats originated. Thus ethnic/social/religious/political tensions get exported to the foreign locale inhabited by these expats. The same happens in the U.S. within any concentrated immigrant communities. As a member of the minority community in the U.S. I would not want to go to Dumaguete for the same reasons I do not wish to go to certain parts of the U.S.

I grew up in Subic as a child when the American bases were still there. We were so integrated into American military culture that it was not hard to adapt once i made it to America and lived in Norfolk Virginia. I actually experienced a bigger culture shock when i lived in my wife's village in another island in the Philippines and I'm Filipino.. You are correct, the presence of expats changes the culture specially if they are in large numbers. I did not realize how far away the culture in Subic has strayed away from most Filipino culture until i went to another location in the Philippines. Very good topic to cover. Thanks!

I signed up to several expat groups on Mexico for a few months and was shocked by griping, complaining about dual pricing, crime, dog packs, and other things like whether there was a Costco or not. I am looking to spend a year away, or so, and ruled out Mexico so it was helpful to join these groups. Real eye opener.

Hi Qiang and Dan. I first moved to Jomtien Thailand in 2003, and lived in a very nice condo for 15,000/mo before I bought a villa in 2005. Just moved back 15 months ago, and discovered that the units are still renting for the same 15k. Prices on food are much higher, but still the best deal is the 10b baht bus. Great posting!

One thing is you can’t generalize all expats as the same we all have different interests depending on where they grew up. One thing is a lot of people from uk and Australia get together and watch soccer me growing up in the USA the interest wasn’t there. Myself growing up in the USA I grew up a football fan ( American football the uk people will say) but usually bars are closed during the games and I have no interest watching reruns and it is a letdown when they only show the Super Bowl.

Regarding the post-COVID influx of expats to expat havens: currently I’m house sitting in San Miguel de Allende, the epitome of an expat bubble. Great video, I agree about expats not always creating a pleasant atmosphere. I gave Jomtien a shot for about a month before I decided to leave. Fortunately, I just rented a place for a month. I didn't like getting approached constantly by salespeople in the Pattaya area. It seemed like everyone was out for a dollar from me. I feel that Chiang Mai has much less of that and the vendors are much less pushy, if at all, compared to Pattaya/Jomtien.

To your point about the "overcharging expats" thing,...
While in central downtown DaNang, Vietnam this week, I went out one night to buy some bottled water for my morning coffee. I try to buy from the local vendors normally. Just a few shops down "grandma" had a little shop with the usual wide array of stuff...including bottled water. I asked her "how much" and she first sheepishly held-up 1 finger indicating 100k VND (a little over $4 USD). The reasonable going price is 10-15k VND. Being new to this my 3rd foreign currency I've dealing with, I pulled out my VND and started to sift through it (it was also dark-ish). She must have had a little bit of a conscience moment as she grabbed a 50k bill instead. I actually thought she was going to get some change, but instead she opened a pouch and got one of those plastic tabs that goes around the top of the bottle to allow easier carrying. Very toughtful. :)
I got back to my hotel and determined she had charged me 4-5x for that 1.5L of water. I mentioned it to my host who was VERY unhappy. She said that most Viets would NOT do that and asked me which vendor it was. I said no biggie as that cash possibly means more to her than to me ... but it did keep eating away at me. I decided I would not enable her bad behavior because (at a minimum) it's bad business all around. I went back the next day and firmly, but as politely as Google Translate will allow, asked her why she had so grossly overcharged me. She at first smiled as she read the translation and then immediately dug out 40k as a refund.
I will find out before I leave but I'm betting my terrific family-stay host went down and read her the riot act about it. As you say Dan, it pays to know prices in the country we visit!
I plan to pop down there before I leave and give her a 100k bill. Hopefully...at least for a bit I hope....her view of westerners will be more about doing the right thing is always the better approach.

I am the only westerner in my Thai village. My wife tells me that the villagers think I am a good guy but that just tells me that they are talking about me. I am a bit of a novelty to the local school kids when they see me.
There are other expats in the area and we hang out at a few spots. I like to meet up with someone once or twice a week. I make a trip to the city a few times a month to stock up on hard to get food items.

Great perspective and insight.. much thanks... I attribute a lot of the drama to the person.. if you have drama in your life.. it will follow you know matter your zip code. And if you find the long term expats in a community, they typically know the where to go and where to stay away from.. My goal in travel is to blend in and embrace the culture.. the locals love it when you use their language even if its rudimentary.. a good morning and smile goes a long way ... Food is another big thing that will happen around you.. if you are invited into someone home.. they will try to feed you.. my recommendation is to eat small.. until your digestive system has developed a taste for the "new" or less hygienic substances.

@@WilliamFluery I agree that when the location becomes popular that it may become less attractive for someone who originally wanted peace and to avoid the crowds. Hard to imagine the property would depreciate in a place that has become more popular, unless of course the developers over-saturate the market. Dan's 'wait until the honeymoon is over' advice is sensible: I think there ought to be a market created for buying property call options: pay a premium to secure the right, but not obligation, to buy a property you are renting by a future date, say within 12 months. A bit like putting down a non-refundable security deposit on a yet to be built condo.

I have seen a low entry barrier option for citizens in the Philippines where it resembles rent-to-buy. Low/No deposit and a portion of the rent builds equity in the townhouse or condo. A really good way for the locals to eventually own. It is also great that they reserve a large portion of a condo development for local ownership only and prohibit foreigners from owning land outright. This helps avoid locals being priced out of the market in their own country.

Yes, a little more expensive, but its worth the extra cost as we have most things we need except good medical facilities especially if facing an emergency. Enjoy your time here on Boracay.

    • @VagabondAwake
      @VagabondAwake  Рік тому

There are Filipinos that were born in other countries and when they visit/move here, predatory sellers quote higher prices because they know they are naive just like us. So not really about race. But not all sellers here are predatory. And once you know the local prices, you just say no to those sellers and move onto ones that quote you local prices. So its not really racism ... in my opinion. But plenty of expats have bad things to say about all Filipinos. I just don't see it that way. My experience is that they are just people like the rest of us. Most good, some bad. Just like every other race.

Great question @dhobby7771, I have one report where I explain what I do about health care and another where I show you how I search for health insurance.
What I do about health care: vagabondbuddha.com/two-biggest-risks-of-retiring-early-overseas/
Report where I search for health insurance: vagabondbuddha.com/best-health-insurance-for-ex-pats-in-philippines/
By the way, once you search for health care you will start seeing more offers for health insurance and travelers insurance when you are online. Health insurance is one of the most dynamic or changing industries in the travel world because so many people around the world are deciding to live or retire outside their home country. So do a search every year before you renew to make sure you have the best available for your personal circumstances because new ones come out every few months. Thanks for asking so I could answer this for many people! Dan

Hey there Dan and Qiang , I have to agree with you on many of your opinions. I spent about 3 months on Boracay nearer to Diniwid Beach ( and loved it ) . Rented a place with a 4 minute walk to Diniwid Beach. Less crowded, more locals. The food options are limited ( I feel ) for foreigners everywhere in the Pl unless you’re in a major mall. Its either D Mall or something along the beach on Boracay. I too spent some time in Iloilo City, nearer the river not far from Molo Plaza. I’ve tried to eat more of the local cuisine, but could only eat about a hand full of local dishes. 😮 I’ve made many friends in the Pl, locals and expats. All very hospitable, open with opinions and conversation and always ready to lend a hand. Besides the issue I had with the food was also the health care around the country. Although Iloilo City has some quality health care, and I was looking for place to stay long term. Many ( including the locals ) warned of home break ins in the more popular “expat areas” that I found within my budget. Now I am on the island of Phuket in Thailand. It’s a party island and it shows sometimes. Yeah, some of the same problems you see in your home country can and do follow and fall over here as well. The bars are filled with the same “old gaffers” every day, all day, all the time. I find the people you want to “watch out for” are the foreigners. The locals are as sweet and friendly as possible. Every once in a while if there is an opportunity for “economic enhancement” …. well , it happens and sometimes I don’t mind knowing they get paid very little for what they do. Food prices for a “better meal” can run the equilavant $8 to 10 USD here. Also not hard to find delicious food options for $3. Anyway I’ll catch you on your next posting . Till then ……. enjoy Boracay…!!!!
