- Ellen welcomed 18-year-old Sivert and his mom Lorna, who offered her then 12-year-old son $1,800 to stay off social media until he was 18. She explained why she made the bet and he shared what it was like to spend his teen years without social media accounts. Then, Ellen gave him a chance to win money for his college education by doing some viral internet challenges that he may have missed out on over the years.

Money aside. He’s probs way happier than most 18 year olds are at this point as a lot of peoples self esteem and confidence issues stem from social media.

I wasn’t allowed to have social media until I was 18 and I’m really happy about it. I’m not addicted to it and just am generally happier than a lot of my friends
Y'all really believe he had no social media ? not having official social media accounts doesn't mean you don't have secret accounts. You have to be completely naive to believe this man was off social media from 2016 to 2022.
If this was my kid I would be so proud of him he's legit the kindest, respectful, human being. Great mom

You could just teach him how to use social media and monitor it and then get him a job early.
This challenge turned out even better for him. He won an additional $10,000 from Ellen and $5,000 for charity. So $16,800 total. And not having to be wrapped up un this social media addicted world in developmental years. 👏🏽

Besides, he is probably very followed on social media now that he went viral. It will probably become a thing for him now. I don't know.

I’ve went to the same school as him before and I have very very little knowledge on him, but he definitely seemed like he had a good childhood.

The fact that he knew his mom was a woman of her word is such a beautiful thing.

I am currently 17 and I do not have social media unless you count UA-cam. I definitely felt when he said he was several steps behind trends and trends moving onto the next one once he you knew about them, and when he was talking about different slang words and not really knowing how to use them, but just having to rely on context clues.
Awesome. My daughter hasn't been on social media yet. She is about to turn 14. Perhaps I should give her an incentive too to see if she can stay off it till 18? Great idea!!
It's a good idea, but as a student I can't survive without SM . UA-cam has great teachers , better than most of my HS teachers.

I can definitely relate to this guy.I also had my first smart phone at 16 and my first social media account at 18 and deleted it 6 months later because of the harm it caused me. I didn't know trends until a year later.People would always laugh,in a joking way, because I would either do the trends wrong like the dab or minsinterpret it.But I really appreciate what my mum did till this day.

Social media does absolutely nothing for the cognitive development of anyone. This must've been hard for him but he has lost nothing and gained so much.
