Great interview. I’m a Canadian and when Harper was prime minister he had somewhat of negativities from liberal news media. After watching this video, HARPER is incredibly insightful and intelligent. It’s amazing how the liberal media acts as propagandists. I regret voting for Justin Trudeau that ousted Harper

@@canmcneely I unfortunately did the same. Wasn't into politics much at that point but regretted it within a month as I'm sure a lot of people did. The worst part is not long after that election I got more into politics and a couple years later I really see the damage people around my age did by just taking the media's word on everything. It won't happen again though it is actually tough to find anyone who actually likes Trudeau because he tries to pander to everyone so he ends up pissing them all off.

@@rnelson299 Harper started to embrace an increasingly social-conservative agenda, including trying to set up a snitch line for neighbours to spy on each other and report things like polygamy. He made mistakes. Plus, political administrations don't usually last more than 10 years regardless of the reasons. Harper got 9 in.

Trudeau destroyed this in his first year sinking Canada into a deficit that we are now buried in until approximately 2040. Disgusting mismanagement of tax dollars. This is what a socialist left government does... takes your money and spends it like drunken sailors. Now they want to impose a carbon tax with no planned system of accountability as to how the money will be applied to reduce the emissions output in Canada.

It’s crazy to think of how much high school brainwashed me into thinking conservatives are terrible people. Now that I’m older I miss Harper.
I feel the same way man. I grew up in Vancouver under a very liberal family. Luckily I had co workers that were strong conservatives and talking to them, they changed my view points on many things. I voted against Trudeau twice, in 2015 and 2021. He’s in power now still and Canada has gone to shit. I pray more and more Canadians understand that Harper was the Man to run this country.

Harper over-stayed his welcome, but his successor is the worst PM we ever had. Ironically the second worst PM we ever had was the current PM's father. Like father, like son, they just love running Canada into the ground and people keep voting them multiple times. I sure do miss Harper now.
My take away - Canadians are un-educated in terms of politics. It's not because I vote Conservative and think I'm right, it's because every party except our Conservative parties think that balancing a budget is optional and think their policies work when we have years of data from our country and others that proves the policies don't work... and then they lie about whether it works. That's the entire Left in Canada - blind to whether their policies actually work: carbon taxes, more bail, uncontrolled immigration, more DEI, more wealth redistribution... none of makes us better off - in fact, all of it has saddled us with with more public debt, more crime, more homelessness, more poverty, more substance abuse, more broken families, more carbon emissions, and more people on the public dole than ever... while our national GDP drops, and our economy stagnates. We have more political prisoners now - e.g., trucker convoy - and less free speech - check out Bill C-11, C-18 and C-68...
Look, if you think the Soviet Union "worked", then please keep voting Liberal and NDP in Canada. You're almost there.

I'm with you - I hate that we only have one real choice for a party that will try to focus on Canada's domestic issues and will try to balance a budget. That happens to be the Conservative Party (in Canada) right now.
It makes my casting a vote "easy" but I hate that this is where our politics went. It sucks that our only choices right now are (1) outright corruption, and (2) less corruption. with some financial restraint.

Serving in the Canadian Army domestically with Stephen Harper as PM was one of the proudest times in my life.
My favourite memory of my service was shaking hands with the PM during a military PR event at the Calgary Stampede in 2007 in FFO.

If a US made TV is $1,000 and a China made TV is $500, Ben thinks all TVs should be made in China because they can do it cheaper so we can buy cheaper stuff. What Ben NEVER talks about is that job you used to have that would allow you to afford nice things is now gone to China so you’re working for way less money... money that doesn’t stretch that far to buy all of this cheap stuff when the price of living (home or rent, utilities, car, insurance auto and healthcare) is continuing to go up.
He should have told Harper that about healthcare though. There was absolutely no moral imperative for Jews of Nazi Germany to pay taxes that funded health care for members of the Nazi party-not even to help poor children of the Nazi Youth suffering with pneumonia. @@txhorn10 The problem isn't that China makes things cheap, the problem is that China puts Tariffs on the US. Because there are things we make cheaper than them that they don't by from us because their government makes those things expensive through Tariffs. All Ben says is Tariffs are a tax on the country that implements it, but Tariffs also hurt the country they're used against (china has more expensive stuff if they can't buy ours). Therefore, if the goal is to punish China by implementing Tariffs until China agrees to remove those Tariffs, then at least recognize you're making things more expensive for your citizens not less, just for a good cause. A worthy sacrifice, not a benefit.
Because of the substance following that statement, it was a great moment in this interview. One of many great moments, in fact.

Harper is a genius and was so good for Canada. I followed and supported him since the late 80's. Trudeau is a an embarrassment and is inadvertently paving the way for another Conservative PM.

@@yahulwagoni4571 Canadian Conservatives have a new leader Andrew Scheer, whom I like, but the media says is somewhat boring (but they said the same thing about Harper). He is, however, competitive nonetheless against Trudeau, which is shocking to political observers (Canadian Prime Ministers traditionally get two terms before they're turfed out).
Trudeau is vulnerable because he had an absolutely disastrous 2018 (you can google the India trip, small business tax, "irregular" border crossers etc.). Recently his team has turned it around somewhat, by sounding tougher on illegal immigration and so on. But the 2019 election is still going to be competitive. It's going to come down to how bad people think the problems facing the country are, and whether they think Trudeau is capable of handling them.
Like Harper said to Ben, Canada is the only western country without a populist movement (thank you Mr. Harper). And that's why the country elected a Trudeau, Haper left it in such good shape an airhead could run it. One wildcard is the Carbon Tax: Trudeau is going to run on imposing one nationally, the Conservatives will run against. If the election becomes a referendum on the tax, the outcome is anyone's guess.

Therefore the Conservative party cannot form a consensus. It must choose an identity group and it cannot bridge Quebec identity with Christian western British identity, thus the country must be split up in at least two, or else Conservative has no future. That is why Conservative has become another attempt at liberal multi-identities. Harper’s clear-headed analysis is so desperately lacking among today’s political leaders. This was my favourite Shapiro episode ever!
What a sensible man. His approach is the economy (country) first and everything falls nicely in line. Trudeau is more about making himself look good and constant double talking, essentially saying nothing...just empty words. I wasn't a huge fan of Harper when he was in power, but now....this guy looks like a hero....amazing how times have changed.
Oh man. There is no bigger Ben Shapiro fan than myself but I have to admit that Harper pretty much slammed him on the trade issue (maybe the first time I've ever seen that happen!). This was such a great interview and shows that a truly effective politician has to be someone who can do more than just debate issues - they have to be able to govern actual people in real life. I agree with another commenter here - if Ben really wants to run for office someday, Harper would be a phenomenal mentor. Harper's seasoned political acumen combined with Ben's intelligence and debating skills would be unstoppable. Great job to both on this!
Nobody got owned. It was the same views in different circumstances. As a politician you have to see things pragmatically. As a ideologue you look for and stick with principles. Both have a roll to play in any political movement.
Think Obama would have won in 2012 if he hadn’t bailed out the auto industry? Harper said it without needing to imply it. Pragmatism is the bricks of a good politician and principle is the foundation. The lesson you learn from this exchange is really that you need both to be an effective leader.
Becoming the Leader is politics.And as a whole we tend to focus more on the Roof and Siding rather than the foundation. Which is why in Western Democracies we tend to observe most politicians as under performers. As a whole we need to look at the principles and pragmatism better than just focusing on weather things just look good from the outside.
Amy, I agree with you on most of this. Ben is wrong on trade and has a problem stepping out of his own two shoes to see life from other perspectives. Like the trade issue, you can do all the book reading and grow your knowledge but that isn’t the real world (wisdom). Free trade has to have two people with good intentions and the world is trying to take out America... this is where Trump is 100% correct when he says I don’t care if they are allies or enemies, we’re getting screwed in trade. Trump correctly sees this whole thing called life as a competition and right now everyone is out to wack us and we have to put up barriers to keep them from getting to us.

@@MattieK09 Was just going to reply the same thing. I'm not sure I agree with either of them on driverless cars, but Tucker certainly won from a rhetoric standpoint IMO. Personally I wonder if some middle ground could be reached, perhaps a managed implementation over time. Would the companies profiting from driverless tech perhaps be willing to be on the hook for generous retraining packages for displaced workers? When a worker is legitimately displaced, they'd have access to these benefits for reasonable amount of time to account for retraining and then the benefits expire. After that the companies are free to profit like anyone else. It doesn't seem like that horrible of a deal to me, but I admit it's not something I've spent much time thinking about.

Somethin Aint Right Here your right he could run again, but you seem a little miss informed Canada doesn’t have terms or term limits like the US. He could be PM for 30 years if he kept winning as it is he won 3 elections and was PM for almost 10 years. I personally think he was a great PM but after 10 years it was time for him to step down gracefully and go out on top, Unfortunately he didn’t. I think it’s possible a conservative government would still be in power if he had stepped down.

I say up to a point because I truly do appreciate diversity as a value in itself. The world is a more interesting place when it is replete with difference and variety. So in the extreme case in which, say, there is a clear and imminent existential threat to the white race, I suppose then I would say such demographic concerns are legitimate. When it comes to culture, I'm a pluralist. Multiculturalism is an oxymoron. One culture cannot be both multiple and singular at the same time. That's a contradiction. That culture should be based on fundamental values about the legal and moral status of people, rights, and responsibilities. When immigration threatens this, then certainly it is a concern, but the mere fact that it can be a threat does not entail that it is, necessarily. Mr. Harper didn't become the PRIME MINISTER of Canada for a decade without knowing how to debate. He's not just an insecure know it all College student. He's not intimidated in the least and easily and smoothly can cut off Ben at the drop of a dime. He's a very intelligent and knowledgeable man. You can tell that Ben completely respected and admired him.

I voted for Harper 3/4 times. He was the best Prime Minister in my lifetime, w/ a close tie to Liberal, Jean Cretien. I'm non-partisan for starters and always was a swing voter, but it's also that liberals were classic liberals back then and Cretien was fiscally conservative, w/a rock star Finance Minister, Paul Martin. Hard to imagine a fiscally conservative liberal for younger people now, but it really was a thing a few decades ago, and liberals like Ontario Premier, Dalton McGintey, was a classic liberal who quashed the move by islamists to have sharia law in Ontario, but he was the typical libtard spendthrift who mega taxed us.
What Harper did do wrong that caused a painful decision not to vote for him the last election was he pushed both Bill C-51 (spy bill that brought in govt. overreach to access all our correspondence in the name of fighting terrorism), but worst of all was he pushed the TPP, which gives corporations authority to be sovereign over our govts. and to sue us if they don't feel they are making enough money due to protectionist policies that we had in place and much more. Other than that, Harper was a champ, a proud nationalist and the most efficient and intelligent PM we ever had.
Nobody is going to do everything right in that position, especially if you’re there for several years. Also depends on who you ask I guess, but it still holds true.

I somehow doubt that. Harper got into politics because he disagreed with the Pierre Trudeau vision for Canada. It is pure irony that he lost to the son of his arch enemy. Harper's vision for Canada has largely lost. He tried to change the constitution on several issues and failed on each of them, his reforms have largely been reversed by the current Trudeau government, and his Conservative party successor (Andrew Scheer) is a complete moron. The Pierre Trudeau vision for Canada has clearly won, and likely won't have any serious challenge for the next 20 years.
