E5: Solo Sailing to Antigua when my Traveler Breaks and I have to Jury-rig a New Mainsheet

  • I am a 27-year-old female solo sailor beginning my circumnavigation.
My boat is a 27 foot sloop named Gecko. Follow me on my journey as I
learn about heavy-weather sailing, the trials of being solo, and my
adventures in paradise. This week I sailed from St. Martin to Antigua
on the best transit yet! Follow along on my (not successful) fix of my
traveler (and subsequent jury-rig) and my clearing out process in St.
Martin. I also answer a few more questions about my boat.

As a dane (danish originated person from the land that produced this Grinde 27 boat) I am quite frankly shocked that the traveler is not through bolted with at least three bolts or more. I apologize on behalf of my people.

Dead right DaxDax. Next stop, a bag of nuts bolts and washers. Buy them long and cut em short. Part of the learning curve. X

Holly, bolts not screws! That traveller needs at LEAST a through bolt at each end with a good sized washer or steel plate for back-up at the nut end. Think of the fun if the traveller was to fail in 30+knots in the middle of the night. Sail safe Holly.

i wish someone had told the previous owner of my boat about that. ive spent weeks replacing screws with bolts. and the few that had bolts had non-locking nuts with no washers or backplates... even the main mooring cleats... just consistently amazed this thing is still afloat before it got under my care.

Sanding with the knife handle.....priceless! Your like a diamond in the rough slowly getting polished and buffed with each salty mile sailed. You have lots of charm and a happy go lucky persona that radiates outward. I believe as you develop into a seasoned solo explorer you will capture amazing adventures whether from the deck of a heaving boat or on terra firma. I hope the main sheet traveler can be fixed permanently without too much difficulty. Be safe out there and may you always have fair winds. Cheers

I'm really enjoying your videos Holly. Thanks for bringing us along. For the traveler, I would suggest thru-bolting two bolts on each end and at least one in the middle. Longer stainless bolts, stainless fender washers and cap nuts for inside the cabin. It would make the traveler pretty bullet proof.

Can I give you some hard won knowledge? Even though you're just motoring, keep your sails uncovered and ready to hoist and an anchor ready to go. This comes in handy when your in a channel with a lot of wind and current and your diesel quits because you added a fungicide to the fuel the day before and now your Racor filter just plugged up and you're heading for the rocks... Oh, did I say that?

Great fix! I hate those pickles too.
Here's a tip. Buy cucumbers boil sea water with some extra salt, pepper corns, clove of garlic optional. Add cucumbers to a jar fill with brine and open the lid once a day. In about 3 days you got pickles, in 5 days you got great pickles! They keep for a couple of weeks in the cooler.
    Happy sailing!

I had a Niagara 35 with a double main sheet set up. Each at the end of were your traveler is mounted. Find two good Hobie setups. More control and easy-to-use. Other wise your traveler should be thru bolted with washers and nuts. If you go with the double setup then definitely thru bolted.

I like your channel and the casual way you tell your stories. I agree the AIS receiver can be a great navigational aid, but think it would have been better if you bought an AIS transponder. It's nice that you can see other ships, but it's even nicer if these other ships see you and get out of your way. I know they are a lot more expensive than the receivers, but I think it's well worth the money. What many yachties don't realise as well is that ,with a transponder, you can be followed by satellite as well, which might be a safe feeling during long crossings. There are also Wifi NMEA multiplexers available, so you could integrate AIS in for example Open CPN on your laptop, which makes it a great chart plotter. Also just a cheap USB-GPS antenna (connected to your laptop) would give you another backup chart-plotter as redundancy for your iPad. Charts to be used in Open CPN are easy to come by in the cruiser community. Although you probably already know all this, since you grew up in it yourself. Fair winds and welcoming shores.

Funny my last comment to you was to get a VHF with AIS. Knowing where ship traffic is in your vicinity helps you sleep at night literally. Good for you, your next upgrade will be a systems 2 AIS, the difference is a 2 series transmits your location so they see you, but so glad to see you're becoming more safety conscious.

In relation to that traveler, and maybe as an interim solution, it might be possible to move it over to one side by an inch. The traveler would no longer be perfectly centred, but it would give the screws some ‘fresh’ fibreglass to bite into. Obviously, through bolts with a backing plate would be a preferable long term fix.

  • @etorrech

Well. Very impressed. And I’m getting or shall I say I have gotten old. I remember an article years ago about a young couple sailing on a cal 25 and later with kid(s) and here you are one of them all grown up. Good on you for getting underway.
I own a boat and this is my third. I had a similar traveler arrangement and suggest that you through bolt it with washers below. You will need fewer bolts than screws but it will be significantly more secure. Do not use any permanent bonding on the bolts. Just standard boat caulking like boat life will do. Stainless bolts and washers are best but if you can’t find them galvanized will do until you can find stainless. I carry lots of spares on my boat so find some old fart on an a cruising boat and he will likely have some to spare.
I love you attitude young lady.
