Weird how vegans are shamed and treated like weirdos or like they are part of some crazy cult when in reality they're the ones whos actually putting an effort in saving the planet. They deserves far more credit for the will power that is needed in order to do what they're doing!
Edit: I’ve changed my mind. After being vegetarian for over 4 years and vegan for 1 year I felt so tired, low energy and sick. My blood test showed low iron. So I went back to a balanced diet with animal products 2 years ago and felt better right away. I no longer drink coffee and have energy all day. If you’re vegan then good for you, but it doesn’t work for everyone. My health is more important to me.

they are treated like this because many vegans feel its their duty to spread their veganism. They want others think exactly the way they do cause they think they are educated (after reading a few topic-related books), right and perfect in every human way possible. This is what makes them seem weirdos. vegans think they will live up to 100yesrs but who knows?- there are many other factors we cant avoid but they shorten our lives day by day. Veganism will save us? -Now tell me how to keep farming grounds full of minerals needed for growing plants, and yess chemicals too

Vitaliy Zh62 Regarding what you're saying about vegans wanting everyone to think the same way as them, you seriously have to realize that the same thing goes for non-vegans.
I'm not a vegan myself, but I'm however a vegetarian. I can only talk for myself, but I personally never talk badly others eating habits unless they start criticizing my lifestyle to my face first. If they say what I do is weird or unnecessary, I'll of course criticize their lifestyle as well.
The thing is most non-vegans feel like they are above everyone else and entitled to their judgmental opinion just because they are in the majority. Which is absolutely ridiculous.
I do agree with you about how mutual respect for each other is important though.

I went vegan exactly one year ago, after i had first seen this movie..and i just came back to this trailer, because i wanted to watch the film again.
It's unbelievable how much going vegan has changed my life over the past year.
I always thought it was hard to give up such things as meat and dairy, but it's been the best decision i've made so far!
The hardest thing about going vegan is neither giving up meat, nor having to explain yourself over and over again -
It's making up your mind and just starting to cut out all those nasty foods!
But when you finally get to that point, where you just stop buying animal products and start eating cruelty-free, that's where it becomes the easiest thing you've ever done.

    •  8 років тому +15

+Nadia G. I hope you're right. I've just watched this movie and are beginning today to change my diet. The hardest part I think will be to change my shopping routines. Buy milk? - nah, settle with water instead! Buy bacon?- Nah, go ahead and have this broccoli. I will fight as hell to get rid of this meat addiction I have. I feel unsettled and hungry when I have eaten food without meat protein in it. I think I have to give it a month or something at first where I reward myself every weekend with a hamburger friday or saturday. My goal is to have a plant based diet where I no longer crave meat every day of the year.

    •  8 років тому +6

+Chrys ”Redtir” Grujevsky Thanks man! I am doing this because it's the only right thing to do. It's that simple. I finally ran out of excuses for my meat based diet with this documentary. I've known about what's being mentioned in this documentary for a long time but have found small excuses to continue to buy meat. It's like with any addiction I guess. And people also find small excuses to continue with their addictions like I did for a long time. Also people's bodies change a lot when they get rid of addictions. I'm definitely not comparing meat with an alcohol or cigarette addiction. But it's not certain that you will feel that great when you initially try to change something that your body craves in a way. I think heroin is dangerous to stop using completely at once because your body crave it (might have to fact check me on that one). But what ever works! I'm glad the "on/off" method worked for you.

    • @nadiacannelloni
      @nadiacannelloni 8 років тому +5

+Henrik Lockström Well i changed my diet over night as well..it's been a decision of 2 seconds and the next day i threw out all the meat and dairy (well I didn't literally throw it out.. i gave it to my neighbour)
and yeah it's really not that hard..and I think it's easier to cut it out all at once cause you may never get rid of the temptation to keep on eating meat 'for just one more day'
..and btw where i live i can save so much money by just buying fruit instead of meat..so it's been over all an awesome decision

I dont think people completely understand, not everyone has to be full vegan 24/7, I mean they can if they want, I am. But if everyone who eats meat went three or four days a week without any, or meat just on weekends, then even that would make a huge positive difference

On top of that, some of the healthiest diets worldwide (the mediterranean one included) include dairy and white meat a couple of times/week and red meat once/10 days. All those enviromentals problems come from farming factory meat, which is used by fast food chains and supermarkets.

I made my meat-eating parents watch this with me. My mother just got frustrated and yelled "but we need meat to survive" even though I've been meat free for 6 years now and I'm clearly still fucking alive (and much healthier than when I ate meat).... And so she stopped watching and left the room.
And the main thing my father said was "the real problem in the world is overpopulation, not livestock" and when that was addressed in the documentary he was silent and had nothing to say.
The most disturbing part for me though was that my parents were both commenting on how cute the pigs and cows were and they both turned away in disgust when the ducks were slaughtered.... BUT A FEW FUCKING MINUTES LATER THEY ORDERED CHICKEN WINGS AND PORK?????? People who cannot kill animals for food themselves let alone just watch it happen on tv shouldn't be eating meat.

That, my friend, is due to food manipulation for years. If you notice closely, we don't eat "pigs". We eat "Pork". We don't eat "cows". We eat "Beaf". Many searchers have proved that, the human brain uses different words in order to differentiate two different categories, therefore not feeling the same for one or another. That's why they started using different words, in order to make us numb and unconscious towards what we're actually doing.

    Here are some facts
80% of corn grown in the USA is fed to animals to produce meat. 95% of oats, 87% of all agriculture land is dedicated to support and produce meat. 1/2 of all the water used in the US for agriculture is used for meat production. It takes 5000 gal of water to produce 1 Ib. Of meat By the way meat includes beef, chicken, lamb, pork . All animal flesh contains fat, cholesterol and no fiber.
It only takes 25 gal of water to produce 1 Ib. Of grain.
Fact if the USA just used 1/2 the land mass used to grow feed for meat to grow grain it could feed the WORLD.
I won't go into global warming and the major cause (beef) do a Google search about the amount of methane gas produced by cattle, more carbon monoxide than all the vehicles and planes that exist.
I am not advocating that you stop eating meat, . All I am advocating if people want to be healthy and active long into their advanced years and vastly reduce the incidence of cancer and heart disease change to a whole food plant based diet and save the planet while you are at it.

If you are suggesting that people become vegans and live on a plant based diet for the sake of the planet, probably because most poeple do not believe it is true or care. However if you suggest that people eat only grass fed free range animals, that might help because the true cost of the animal flesh would elimate many from that culinary fare. If the truth were known, we as humans are not meat eaters and eating meat causes nearly all the major ailments we now are faced with. If you truly want vibrant health and a long life do as the longest living animals do. Eat only plants!

Your FACTS are laughable at best. 80% of corn is NOT FED to animals bozo. Do you even know how much corn is used today? If you did, you wouldn't make such a lame statement with a straight face. Corn is in everything even gasoline. Are you suggesting that 20% of corn is all that is used to produce all of the products that use corn? Do you even know all of the chemicals that are derived from corn? Or all of the products that use corn to some degree? 3 out of every 4 grocery items you buy use corn. Think about that for a moment. Food items too numerous to list, aspirin, shampoos, toothpaste, glues, gasoline, cologne, vitamins, vegetable oils, vanilla extract, baking soda, plastic bottles, (Yep that water you drink is contained in a plastic bottle which has corn in it.) paper products use starch made from corn, spark plugs use corn starch in making the porcelain used on spark plugs, paint and varnish, maltodextrin is sprayed on instant coffee and tea, Corncobs, when finely ground, are relatively dust free and very absorbent. This absorbency makes corncobs useful carriers for pesticides, fertilizers, vitamins, hand soaps, cosmetics and animal litters. - See more at: www.glutenfreesociety.org/gluten-free-society-blog/hidden-corn-based-ingredients/
Anyway, with just a few minutes of reading you will see how it is IMPOSSIBLE to feed 80% of all corn produced to animals. But don't let real facts get in the way of a nice propaganda piece.

plants are missing over 50 nutrients only found in animals (bcs they are animal nutrients) and humans have a VERY carnivorous digestive tract. 91-98% of plant matter we eat, comes out the other end as waste. Plants in the diet of humans is the cause of human methane emissions. (as well as all other digestive issues)
cant link sources w/o getting comment auto-shadowbanned.

    • @wearebacteria
      @wearebacteria 3 роки тому

@Madeleine Marceau never said that humans are not omnivores. But so are cows and sheep and wolves. All animals are omnivores. That doesn't say anything about what they specialize on eating.
I said that we are highly carnivorous animals. That our entire digestive tract is carnivorous. That doesn't mean we are not omnivores. I don't think you fully understand the definitions...
And who said anything about torturing animals? There doesn't have to be any animal suffering involved to eat animal foods. Plus foods such as oysters/mussles don't even have a brain or nervous system.. they are like mushroom and have most of the animal nutrients. Yet your religion... veganism forbids it. (without a single valid argument why)
There is a lot of concrete un-debunkable evidence that humans are carnivorous animals.
      1. Our stomach ph acidity is 1.5 like dogs and cats
      2. We have the largest small intestine and the smallest colon of all primates. (the small intestine cant digest ANY plant matter other than juices) And our colon can only digest 2-9% of fiber. The rest goes out as waste undigested.
      3. We have a small gut(belly) and large brain, the characteristic of all hypercarnivores like wolves and lions. (look at pics) Whereas all herbivorous/frugivorous animals have a large gut and small brain relative to size.
      4. Unlike herbivorous animals, our pancreas produces no enzymes for the breakdown of fiber/cellulose.
      5. Our intestine is also acidic
      6. Our intestines and saliva is 95% putrefactive bacteria which are all about digesting animal protein and fats........
      7. We have a gallbladder which is all about digesting large amounts of fat. (which at the very least proves humans are not meant to be strict vegetarians)
And like I said.. plants are missing MORE than 50 nutrients only found in animals.
And you are going to have the argument that they are not essential and that we can convert them. However I have all the sources for debunking each claim for each nutrient you claim we can convert in sufficient amounts.
How long you'll last as a strict vegetarian depends on genetics, stored nutrients in liver/fat, your bone density, your muscle mass, your lifestyle (sedentary or athlete), your gut microbiome.

    • @wearebacteria
      @wearebacteria 3 роки тому

@Madeleine Marceau You've a hard time accepting that you've been fooled and even brainwashed your entire life. Obviously. This applies to everyone who is wrong about anything. So subconsciously you reject anything that goes against your core beliefs.
When you first go vegan, you reverse insulin resistance and allow your body to eat itself.
If you don't get 50+ nutrients, where does you body gonna get it from? (considering studies prove humans cant convert the plant nutrients into the animal nutrients anywhere near the required amounts)
I'm assuming you experienced the benefits of veganism with your own body, so how can it not be real?? but realize that we cannot avoid eating RAW MEAT. Every single time we sleep(or don't eat anything for 5 hours) we go into a state of fasting.
Fasting = Autophagy = Myself + Eat = self cannibalism.
You cant avoid eating raw meat. It's literally impossible. Which means there is no such thing as a "strict vegetarian". Because your entire body is LITERALLY made out of animal nutrients.
So you can survive for quite a while... but that has nothing to do with optimal perfect health. If you've never tried the ideal human diet, then how can you possibly understand what you've been missing? It's not possible.
You don't know how much better you could feel and how much more clarity, energy, and strength you could have if only you followed the primal diet by Aajonus Vonderplanitz.
And yes, all animals are omnivores, you can confirm this with your own eyes. Watch a video called "Herbivores Eating Meat Compilation - All animals are omnivores - The Vegan Nightmare"
As well as "OUR GUT: Unlike The Other Great Apes, SPECIALIZED for Eating Meat, Not Plants" and this explains what I was saying about omnivores/carnivores/digestive tracts/stomach acidity/ etc etc
I never said that our digestive system cannot digest ANY plant matter. How many times do I have to repeat myself? It's apparent that you're not well mentally.
And why would all nutrients be found in plants? are you saying that plants require animal nutrients?? How ignorant is this claim.
And we don't have to pay anyone to torture animals to get animal foods. I simply have my own regenerative animal farm. And buy from small local farmers who I know and don't mistreat their animals. You sound like someone who doesn't have a clue what you're talking about. You've seen too many vegan animal torture videos.
I'm completely against animal factories myself... so your claims are just ignorant. Are you claiming that the only way to get animal foods is from animal factories??
And lastly... can you give me a single nutrient found in pasture-raised organic raw meat (or wild meat) which is unhealthy? How can meat be unhealthy, even tho we are literally made out of it and eat it every single day via fasting? You make these bold claims, but it's all coming from beliefs. You need to work on becoming a little more rational dear.
And it's okay to lose an argument, don't feel bad about it. It gives you the opportunity to improve.

I've been a vegetarian for seven years. I have recently watched Cowspiracy and stumbled across Gary Yourofsky's videos, and have decided to go vegan (it's been three days now). I was naive to think eggs and milk were fine, but it's not, an animal is still being hurt whether it's being murdered or not. It's hard don't get me wrong, but I know that when you're dedicated to something, the dedication opens up a whole lot of accessibility, and that's powerful. Most people have told me that being vegan is unhealthy, I'm going to be unhappy, I'll become green (lmao), and that I'm still a murderer as I eat plants. What I'm basically trying to say is, to anyone who thinks veganism is hard; it's not. The hard part about veganism is having to deal with meat eaters' constant judging comments. DON'T LISTEN TO THEM, BECOME VEGAN, EMBRACE LIFE, SAVE THE PLANET AND THE ANIMALS! ♥

You are joining two separate issues. It's not about meat eaters vs vegans. It's about the poor livestock and water management practices being led by both factory farms and the larger majority of agriculture, even organic agriculture is a joke. Monocropping and poor animal/water management is what made most of the deserts on this planet. Holistic Grazing is how we regenerate grasslands and ecosystems.

Oliver Hart "Monocropping and poor animal/water management is what made most of the deserts on this planet". Please post a link for all of us unlearned folk can read about this "theory" Hmm, I wonder how the deserts in the middle east got started way back in Biblical days? I wonder why on Earth we have places called the tropics that grow tons of foliage and plants? Maybe they are not allowing any mean and nasty cattle to be farmed there that's why? hahahaha. Did it dawn on you that perhaps, it could be related to the climate that it is in and how much rainfall it gets each year? Nah, it must be the farmers raising cattle that is creating deserts.....hahahaha. My side is hurting haha. I guess Abraham must have raised millions of cattle in tight spaces 3,000 years ago and so poorly managed that flock that it caused the Earth to suddenly stop raining like it once did and now only a few inches per year there and over time the Sahara desert popped up. I wonder why S. Florida gets so much rain? I see a lot of cattle free ranging all over the place on land down here....Hmmm. Should we expect a desert in Florida anytime soon too?

However, now I am into documentaries that go further, but I'm too afraid I might have a panic attack just looking at them. - I can btw understand if that sounds funny, but I'm actually not joking, my empathic skills are extremely well-developed and it is way too easy for me to feel another animal's pain (whether human or not).

    "The Voiceless" (By Molly Biehl)
There's problems in the world today
    Too many to explain
And if someone doesn't like something
    They're entitled to complain.
But what about those who have no voice,
no words for us to hear.
They never get to have a choice,
They live in pain and fear.
    They are the animals of the world;
No one can hear them cry.
But just because they can't speak out
    Should they have to die?
    'They're not as intelligent,
They aren't people! What's with all this fuss?"
What if a person isn't very smart?
Can't he feel pain like us?
Can't he feel and suffer and think?
Or doesn't he have a soul?
    Something has got to change.
This world is out of control.
Until we protect the most innocent ones,
    Those who cannot fight,
This cannot be a peaceful world
    This world cannot be right.

ps: i loved this documentary minus the vegan part as its not supported by enough scientific facts. A single doctor claiming he's been vegan for over 30 years and he can run does not reflect anything on a big scale. The main point to me should be that everyone should enormously reduce their meat consumption, perhaps something like 1 portion of meat every 2/3weeks. There is no need to drastically stop the consumption but there should be an imposition in greatly reduce the consumption and do it now.

Cristian Curtis Al Gore was nothing more than a paid mouthpiece for propaganda. You need to read up on the background of Al Gore and Maurice Strong, conmen who hijacked the "pollution" movement and set up private bank accounts to profit from "global warming/cooling/climatechange." (see link below) For Al Gore's role in playing the "fall guy" in 2000 that ushered in the 100%-riggable Diebold machines for presidential voting, he was promised a Nobel Peace Prize for *doing nothing* (which they gave to him in 2007) and a role as "messiah/narrator" in their Inconvenient Truth BS that mentions NOTHING about corporate pollution (including oil spills), the effects of diet (meat-eating) and Monsanto (terminator seeds) on the planet, nor does it offer alternative fuels (it never will). Al Gore is a total CONMAN - and richer than Satan.

Also, because of the grazing method and how many animals are managing are certain amount of ground, the cow dung is incorporated back into the fields - there is no overproduction that needs to be carried away.

Facebook, youtube, google... they all gain so much money and growth and they are just virtual (okay, energy. right. But there is the possiblity of renewability). Marx also predicted the end of growth in the 19th century but he oversaw the shift to a service economy which now is one of the most important job sectors especially in the US and Europe. Growth doesn't necessarily needs raw materials. Nevertheless i agree that the growth addiction especially in politics and business should not be the way.

Active supporter of our dairy 'industry' here. Haven't seen the film, but I see no argumental, factual comments here. Only comment how great and awesome this film is. So I'll break it up. First myth, argument used a lot by you guys: several gallons of water needed for a gallon of milk, so this is 'wasted'... MYTH, because water doesn't just disappear like that! Water ends up in manure, which is distributed to fields. A great deal of water ends up in the cyclus. Same goes for agriculture of course.

philltitanium It's people like you whom, in 99% of cases, have never even visited a farm that proclaim the most bullshit. You don't even know what happens at a dairy farm. You don't even know how anything works. You know nothing about harvest, milk production, manure management, equipment, innovation and developments. Still people like you claim you know it ALL by saying dairy is not sustainable.

You worked on one dairy farm, only 1, and did that one dairy farm make your perception of dairy farms. I been on so many dairy farms (Europe) there is not one the same, off course there are some bad ones, but that's in every business, look at dog owners. There is no need for punching cows with sticks and such. Cows produce and health the best at regularity and ease, cows reflect your own mood.

Jim, understood.... but NOT in the case of local food systems. I'm 60, i remember a time when we grew our OWN FOOD on the outskirts of the cities. We processed that food, we further processed that food in town. We made shoes, clothing, jeans, ONLY LOCAL FOOD will recreate "VALUE" and thriving metro and rural economies across every state. Currently, we are dependent on long distance food. That food demands a lot of fuel. If we return, slowly, to a local food system, through the demand of our local customers, we will begin to turn this Global train around. We will once again know local food security, a local economy with jobs, improved local health, local fuel conservation AND, ultimately, local food price point stability.

It's now on Netflix Germany aswell and you should watch. So far I was only vaguely aware that meat is one of the biggest problems of the climate change but this docu comes along with actuall numbers and it's freaking scary. So many more people need to know this. I already know so many vegetarians but all they ever say is 'oh you can't kill the poor animal. It's a living being too' Tbh Im an asshole enough not to care about that (like most people do) I wont be sad about a dead cow if it's yummi. But this argumentation goes so much further and If people would know about all this so many would change their livestyle and eating behaviour. This film scared the hell out of me. And that was a good thing. A cow may not made me cry but I could not help it when I saw what that single cow does to the planet to be bred and fed. If we keep this up then bye bye earth. While watching this, somehow all the little information one can read up here and there came together and it all made sense. For example years ago I read that germany spends most of its taxes to subsidize farmers (unknown by most people, who still wonder why less and less money is put in education etc) I knew this but it always seemed so weird to me. Why would we have to do that, and why would be do that even. How could this be true. I knew the fact but i did not know the why. it didnt make any sense to me. Now I know and its disgusting.

Great documentary! Very well done and highlighting a very serious issue. It was the last drop in my decision to try go vegan for at least 1 month and to my own surprise it wasn't all that bad. I love eating meat, milk, eggs, cheese, but having a purely plant-based diet isn't bad either. And with keeping the protein intake reasonably high with beans, lentils, soya, etc... one doesn't really miss animal products much. Plus I must say over the 1 month I was eating solely vegan food I felt somehow healthier. I absolutely recommend to try vegan food to anybody. I personally don't feel to go full-time vegan right now, but I'm planing to make every 4th month in a year a "vegan month" where I will eat only vegan food. I hope that many more people will go vegan so that for more and more smart chefs and food producers recognise the vegan market as interesting for putting their effort and creativity into it, so that we will have even better vegan products on the market. Needles to say, already the current vegan food is already pretty good.

It's kind of funny and sad at the same time that after watching the film the first thing I should do is to cut my meat consumption and check where and how the meat is produced. But what did I do? Nothing. I blindly continue the same diet. In fact, this was the first time I even thought of stopping meat consumption.
So, while the politicians argue who should cut most from coal and other emissions, do I think we can cut the emissions from farming? Nope. Why? Because the world is filled with selfish people like me who, even after recognizing the facts, are not willing to change.
I do try to make change by recycling and using public transport etc. Does it help? Maybe. Does it help enough? Not in a million years.

***** I haven't seen this film ,but am very familiar with the facts. Cut meat consumption- agreed. Go vegan - not the most efficient use of land. The most efficient use is high density mixed perennial agriculture. An example would be fruit/nut trees, with undergrowth of other edible plants and ,say ducks eating slugs and converting them to eggs. Or a pure orchard with geese or sheep grazing the herbage underneath so one doesn't need to waste fuel and buy a machine to do it, and you get eggs in addition to the tree crops. Industrial farming - mostly grain, requires massive fossil and unsustainable mineral imports, and is rapidly degrading the soils ability to produce a crop, at the same time contributing to runoff and eutrophication. Most vegan diets are grain and bean based, which are annual crops encouraging soil damage.

I have a few issues with the movie... as someone who is studying agricultural science who is also an environmentalist i think im qualified.
The amount of GHGs released by cows is measured in gross release, e.g. respiration and waste. however the carbon gained from feed and grass is gained from photosysnthesis and is therefore part of a cycle (just like the carbon cycle in a regular ecosystem). So really the affect which Cows have on GHGs have on this cycle is the convesion of CO2 into CH4 (this is bad). Giving evidence of purposely misleading statistics.
The water-use from cattle is said to contain the total water requirements of the grains they eat, however the grains and legumes that compose cattle feed is primarily rain-fed, meaning that this water is not taken out of wetland ecosystems. So making the comparison with leaving the garden hose on is what i believe is once again being purposely misleading.
There are a few other issues but ceebs.

Cardiovascular disease, cancer, and other chronic diseases, hair loss and neurological issues are primarily due to a heavy meat and dairy diets and nutrient deficiencies. Now, if you eat processed food of any kind, including processed vegan food, you're still going to have similar health risks as meat eaters. At 48 years old, having been a whole food vegan for 12 years, my cholesterol, vitamin and nutrient bloodwork is the best it's ever been in my entire life, with my LDL levels way below the norm. Previous to that when I was eating meat and dairy, I had calcium deficiencies, was pre-diabetic and on statins, was 40 lbs heavier and developing neurological problems as well as depression. I stopped taking statins due to bad side effects and completely healed all of ailments by switching to a vegan diet, and increased my exercise endurance, much to my former doctor's surprise. My husband had a severe heart attack and TIA a few years ago and now his cholesterol and sodium levels are back to normal since he decided to convert to veganism. Our doctor is considering reducing his meds since his bloodwork has been consistently good. Look what’s happening in Australia right now. It’s 8 degrees warmer than average in October in some areas and southern Queensland and NSW is literally on fire. Scott Morrison (Prime minister) isn’t doing shit to manage the high amount of resources that are required (Water, food land) as well as the emissions of Co2 and Methane (which turns into Co2 anyway) regarding animal agriculture because of corporate profits. Rather than being proactive by helping farmers to adapt to the future by using techniques like Vertical farming he is being reactive by funding bandaid solutions like sending water which Australia barely has!
Or we could just not fund the industries causing this and not buy their products.
It took 200,000 years for the human population too reach 1 Billion , it only took 200 more to reach 7 (approaching 8).
At this stage it’s nearly an obligation too adapt a more plant based lifestyle. Watch Cowspiracy on Netflix if you want to see a more global scale

Disturbing as this film may be, the human body is designed by nature to consume animal protein and fats. Over the thousands of years of our evolution, we have not evolved to become herbivores. We are out right Omnivores. This articles puts up the pros and cons of both, but has favour of a balanced omnivore diet - paleoleap.com/vegetarianism-bad-environment/ .
To add a question, if everyone stopped eating meat today, do we think that deforestation to grow all this wheat, corn and soy beans wouldn't happen? Of course it would. This isn't about eating meat or not eating meat. Its about balance and taking only what we need from nature to survive. The native indians did this extremely well, maybe we should look to their way of life to bring balance back. We have to get back to local, natural production - but the downside of that is whether or not we could produce enough to sustain the population.
