Those two albums are so good and so important they absolutely deserve their own little box set. Great to see this. (Maybe this is an unpopular opinion but I think these are better than his Blue Note releases!)

I think these records are indispensable and belong into any Jazz collection.

After being down on Craft after it’s first two small batch releases, it’s great to see they’ve made these great releases available to everyone! This O C release deepened my appreciation for his artistry - in ways that seeing Picasso’s early paintings help me appreciate his more abstract work later on. Great review as always. Thank you.

These recording are not of the “way out” sort that Coleman is known for. I sampled both recordings and just ordered mine. Thanks Michael!

Ornette Coleman is one of my favourite jazz musicians. He was so different from Miles Davis who I also like equally as much .

Crispy is one of my favorite descriptors ... I also like crunchy ... as a graphic designer I appreciate the design of this package so so much. Also thank you for commenting on the density of the jacket cardboard. I will actually buy this set over your previously reviewed MINGUS triple album because I don't like flimsy (another favorite descriptor!) jackets. THAT is what a neurotic collector I am! Vielen dank für deine anleitung!

I agree, heavy stock covers are always preferred and sometimes influence my choice of pressing. Although I don't really like the box cover artwork- boring. I wish they had given it a more classic look similar to the records.

It's a very classy set. Unsure how limited it is but jazz fans should not sleep on this one. It's incredible!

Thanks for the thorough review Michael. I was on the fence because the marketing didn't detail the quality, but after this video I promptly ordered a copy. As a graphic designer, quality on certain box sets are a make or break deal. Happy Craft came through. That being said, wish the box cover was more minimal. I feel labels over-do it, but that's just my tastes.

Eventually you’ll realize that you should never have low expectations for sound quality, when it’s a Contemporary recorded by Roy DuNann.

I haven’t had a chance yet to listen to this release. Between my RSD haul and other purchases it’s been put off. Yesterday I received my Craft Small Batch Miles Davis release yesterday afternoon, so that has move to number one of the records I will listen to. One thing I have to say is the record was shipped very well protected. Kudos to Craft for taking such precautions.

Been enjoying the box set this weekend - nice packaging, great artwork, and the vinyl is clean and easy to enjoy. Was familiar with "Something Else", but not "Tomorrow is the Question." Now I want to replace my CD of "The Shape of Jazz to Come" LOL

Thanks Michael. Maybe a bit unfair but just like to know your opinion on the overall sound quality comparison between this and the 6LP Tone Poet, R DuNann vs RVG, & BG vs KG? (Both RTI)

I think Bernie Grundman is the right choice to master Contemporary releases. He mastered for Contemporary, back in the day and he knows all the tricks that were used then. I'm glad he is doing Contemporary Acoustic Sounds Series. He is one of the best mastering engineer. See Miles Davis Kind of Blue UHQR, Classic Records releases and so on.

I am waiting for my Miles Davis Small batch box also. Very mixed reviews on the sound from a few of the other audiophile channels. I suppose there has to be a misfire from time to time with these labels.

      Hello David,
I just played it today and have to agree with some. I do not own another pressing of the album, but sound wise is mediocre. Not bad, but not impressed. I wouldn’t be surprised if the AP version is better sounding (have it pre-ordered). Only 1 copy of this album will remain in my shelf.

Hi Roberto. I suppose they can't all be good. I imagine the AP pressing will be really good. Miles is my favourite jazz artist so I may have to order that also. Stay well.

If you like in Unison playing.. then Coleman is it.. I'm not a big fan of it.. In my Jazz Be Bop group.. I tend to like trumpet or alto sax..prefer trumpet over having any reed players.. now I'm thinking of creating just a trio.. in its raw form : Drums, Contra Bass and Piano.. pure , simple and raw.. its not easy either to play with 3... every musician needs to be on top of their game and put in 1000% energy..and at this same time listen intently and communicate... Now you know why musicians like Bill Evans, could pull it off.. bc they are extraordinary and ethereal..
